MONDAY, 08 DECEMBER – A total of 30 Organising Committee Members (AJK) of UMS Sprint Programme consisted of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) students organised a community programme with the villagers of Kampung Patau-Patau 1, Federal Territory of Labuan.
Assistant Registrar, Student Affairs UMSKAL, Mohd. Fadzli Sarudi said, this programme will enhance students’ soft skills to become leaders in future.
“Students are an excellent generation builder, forming their own identity and becoming role model to society. Therefore, students should be able to adapt to all conditions and situations and be able to tackle the challenges of globalisation and socialisation,” he said.
He was speaking on behalf of the Director of UMSKAL, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murnizam Haji Halik in officiating the ‘Satu Desa Sejuta Warna’ (One Village One Million Colours) at the village.
Meanwhile, programme advisor to the Student Organisation Management (POP) UMS, Ricky Chia Chee Jiun said, the programme was a form of leadership training for first year undergrads to hone their talents and open up opportunities for undergrads to engage in community activities, leadership and unity among village community with the hope to nurture and produce a proactive, creative and innovative generation.
The programme themed ‘Satu Desa Sejuta Warna’ was organised by the Student Organisation Management UMSKAL and was conducted for a day targeted at primary school students ranging from seven to 12 years. – SS (fl)

TUESDAY, 2 DECEMBER – Despite the heavy rain, it did not deter the more than 800 undergrads of the Faculty of Business, Economy and Accountancy (FPEP) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to ensure the success of the Business Innovation Carnival 2, 2014 at Dataran Dewan Canselor (Chancellor Hall Square), yesterday.
The two-day programme aimed to give students the opportunity to be involved and experience to deal with the world of business in future.
According to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Dr. Shahril Yusof, besides being job seekers, today’s graduates must become job creators.
“30 percent of you need to find and get into business after graduation,” he said, representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah at the opening of the programme.
Also exhibited at the programme were prototypes and research results of year end semester by undergrads of FPEP.
Earlier, the Dean of FPEP, Dr. Rasid Mail said the organising of such programmes among others was to foster competitiveness among undergrads in the implementation and preparation of business plans.

TUESDAY, 2 DECEMBER – A total of 182 undergrads of Labuan International Campus, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMSKAL) had successfully held a Premier Forum titled ‘Di Manakah Kita?’ (“Where Are We?”) organised by Universiti Malaysia Sabah Anti-Corruption Secretariat (SPRUMS) Labuan International Campus branch, recently.The moderator of the forum was Fadzil Othman from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM) Labuan featuring panel members which comprised Shamsul Haji Salip from Putrajaya MACC headquarters, Dr. Zamhar Iswandono Awang Ismail; Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Computing and Informatics UMSKAL, Ezra John Anthony as the Exco of Leadership and Training for Student Representatives Council (MPP) and Muhammad Firdaus Mohd Kushairi as the Exco of Lajnah Tarbiah and Education for Friends of Al-Hikmah UMSKAL.
Dean of the Faculty of Computing and Informatics UMSKAL, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ag Asri Ag Ibrahim who represented UMSKAL Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murnizam Haji Halik was the guest of honour at the function held at the Lecture Hall Centre.
The aim of the programme was to discuss on the understanding of undergrads on corruption, the level of problems in corruption among undergrads, ways that undergrads can do to curb corruption and discussion on current issues concerning corruption.
Mohd Arba, who was the Programme Director said, this programme could help to unravel the confusion among undergrads in the context of corruption itself.
He thanked the Student Affairs Division (HEP) UMSKAL and UMSKAL Director for giving them the opportunity to organize such forum. – SS (fl)

TUESDAY, 2 DECEMBER – It may have caught you by surprise to read the title of this news but the reality is that every male Muslim boy would have to go through such situation, considered to be a ‘terrifying’ experience at least once in his lifetime.
A total of 65 children attended the ‘Khatan Perdana 2014’ (Circumcision) Programme organised by the Mosque and Islamic Affairs (UHEIM), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) last weekend.
According to the Head of UHEIM, Dr. Muhamad Suhaimi Taat, the event organised yearly received encouraging participation from among children of UMS staff and surrounding residents.
“We organise this programme every year end and the fee of RM60 charged is much cheaper than at private clinics,” he explained.
Dr. Suhaimi also said, the programme had the full cooperation of the Sabah Central Zakat (PZS) and the Sabah Islamic Charitable and Medical Association (PERKIPS), which provided the doctors who performed the circumcision process. – CD (fl)

MONDAY, 1 DECEMBER – Malaysia’s Premier Literary Award 2012 winner, Dr. Ramzah Dambul, more affectionately called Dr. Rem, will launch his latest book, 'Déjà vu Cinta Pencari Katarsis'.
The book, which is a sequel to his first book ‘Alien Menchari Chinta’, another result of his works was elected as the best poetry book in the Malaysia Premier Literary Award 2012.
Dr. Ramzah, a lecturer of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in the field of Synoptic Climatology, became active in poetry since 2005 which resulted in his recorded collection of poems in ‘Alien Menchari Chinta’.
Dr. Rem’s second book which contain a collection of poems, notes, doodles and paintings is published by the Institute of Translation and Books Malaysia (ITBM). The book will be launched by the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Hj. Aman on 2 December at Dewan Bankuasi (Banquet Hall), UMS.
Concurrent with the launching of the book, the 4th series of solo exhibition by Dr. Rem entitled ‘Sahabat Angin dan Laut’ will also be held. The exhibition is a symbolic interpretation of the state’s wealth of natural treasures and cultural beauty that blended in it.
A letter of intent will also be signed between UMS and ITBM, which is expected to be witnessed by Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Haji Aman. – MA (fl)
