TUESDAY, 20 MAY – A total of 73 Year 2 undergrads of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Sports Science Programme launched the 10^th Basic Entrepreneurship Acculturation Expo (APK) recently.

The expo was a platform for creative thinking in planning business proposals to penetrate  the wider market in future.

The application of Sports Science in APK was also intended to promote the knowledge of sports science to visitors of the expo.

 Among the activities organised were fitness and agility games such as dart, lego, bottle-fishing and the like.

There was also a health measurement activity such as body weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), height and so on. Selling of food, handicrafts, clothing, accessories etc were also held at the premises.

The application of sports science this year had enabled the undergrads to explore and learn some components found in the said field. – SS (fl)

MONDAY, 19 MAY – Each employee must have sound knowledge, skills and good attitude in executing their daily tasks and responsibilities.

Head of Chancellery Department, No’man Hj Ahmad stressed this at a meeting with non-officer staff which was held at the Event Gallery this morning.

He reminded all staff to apply moral values such as mutual help and respect.

“Don’t be a arrogant and proud and we should not be stingy with time, for time belongs to Allah S.W.T.,’ he said.

He added that an excellent staff should be able to hold office as a public servant and always ready to serve.

MONDAY, 19 MAY – In line with the implementation of the various transformation in conjunction with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) 20^th anniversary, the Curriculum and Student Development Centre (PKPP) launched a Premier Curriculum Carnival Programme with the Kimanis District community which ended last night.

The programme had been held at the Chancellor Hall (Dewan Canselor) yearly but this time at Kimanis, offering a variety of activities in the form of educational ones including community service.

The carnival programme Director, Ramli Arsi explained that almost a thousand UMS undergrads were involved throughout the three weeks of the programme.

“Among some of the activities organised includes sports programmes with the Kimanis community, educational activities with the children and host families involving 189 undergrads and 44 families.

“Also launched is a Tamu Carnival in collaboration with the Kg. Brunei, Kimanis Village Development and Security Committee at a site near the river which among others, to give UMS undergrads an opportunity to be exposed to UMS co-curricular programmes, as well as an opportunity for local communities to carry out their business of selling homemade cakes and delicacies made by the villagers themselves,” he added.

Meanwhile, UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah at the opening ceremony of the carnival also announced SMK Bongawan 2 as the adopted school of UMS.

He said the community programmes should be implemented on an on-going basis to ensure that UMS undergrads did not miss out in contributing to the rural communities.

“The University Community Engagement (UCE) Programme or community network programmes is actually the KPI for every public university in Malaysia to draw the undergrads and community closer.

“Such programme is useful as it provides opportunities for undergrads to learn the local culture, it is also a form of escapade for the undergrads, to be outside of the campus and enjoy the village atmosphere besides the opportunity to interact with their peers and village community," he said.

The opening ceremony of the inaugural carnival held off-campus was officiated by the President of the Sabah Native Affairs and Assemblyman for Bongawan, Mohamad Alamin. – MA (fl)

MONDAY, 19 MAY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Rugby team was recently crowned Champions of the Kota Kinabalu Champions League Division Two .

Held at the Sukma field, Kota Kinabalu, the finals saw UMS Team beating Kepayan Tigers with an aggregate of 22-7.

The victory paved the way for UMS team to step up to Division One of the Kota Kinabalu League next season.

It is also a history for the team that was strengthened by two Fijian students, when they became the first team to win the Kota Kinabalu Rugby League Division Two.

According to UMS Team Manager, Deidre Daryl Dasing, she and her team were pleased with their achievements not to mention the team’s ability to suppress their opponents to win the league and emerged champions in the Division Two.

In the next season, UMS will be joined by OSCA, UiTM, Sabah Warrior and KK Sharks in the Division One League. – SS (fl)
