MONDAY, 15 AUGUST – Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting (FPEP), UMS had jointly organised a ‘Summer School 2016’ Programme recently with Akita International University (AIU) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), involving AIU and UTM students.

The 10-day programme, held from 8-18 August 2016 was strongly supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah, tourism agencies in Sabah, and the relevant communities.

According to Dean of FPEP, Associate Professor Dr. Raman Noordin, these collaborations not only could improve students’ understanding on the flora and fauna Sabah, but also a chance for them especially international students and those from Peninsular Malaysia to experience the culture and lifestyle of local communities, particularly those of the rural areas of Sabah.

“It is also a platform to inculcate the culture of hands-on research experience among students,” he said in his welcoming remarks of the programme.

Based on the concept of Project Based Learning, Summer School 2016 involving students of Tourism Programme from these three universities, they were also given the chance to explore current issues in the field of tourism such as Green Economy in Tourism, and Good Governance of Protected Area through a series of talks and sharing with industry players such as Tourism Sabah, Sabah Parks and Walai Tokou Homestay Entrepreneur in Kundasang.

A signing of Letter of Intent was also held between AIU and FPEP, UMS with a view to promote bilateral cooperation and foster strong relationship in the field of academic and research, student exchange, cultural exchange, and the organising of conferences between FPEP UMS and AIU, Japan.

Also present at the ceremony were Director of Centre for Innovative and Development Planning UTM, Professor Dr.  Amran Hamzah; Deputy Director of East Asian and Research, AIU, Associate Professor Tetsuya Toyoda; and Deputy Dean of Research and Innovation, FPEP, Dr. Rini Suryati Sulong. – (fl)

FRIDAY, 12 AUGUST – UMS being a public university has the equipment that can be used to carry out research in the Public-Private Research Network (PPRN), a programme implemented by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOE).

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Dr. Shahril Yusof said, entrepreneurs in Sabah especially Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) could use the facilities at UMS to assist them in managing their respective business.

At the same time, he said UMS also provided their expertise to collaborate with industry players in solving problems faced by local entrepreneurs.

“This is an excellent opportunity for us to take advantage of the expertise available in the public universities, including UMS to solve the shortage of industrial businessmen.

“The government is also opening a special fund for universities and industries to solve the problems related to production,” he said while speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah at the opening of the Seminar and Workshop on PPRN Roadshow Sabah Series held at Dewan Resital, yesterday.

The ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Industrial Development, Datuk Seri Panglima Raymond Tan Shu Kiah who was represented by his assistant Datuk Bolkiah Ismail. – (fl)

WEDNESDAY, 10 AUGUST – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is ready to become the focal point to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) particularly in assisting the public in the field of computer and cyber.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Dr. Shahril Yusof said, it was based on the facilities and infrastructure in addition to adequate human resources to assist in ensuring computer literacy among the community in line with the demands of current times.

“As a Public University (UA) in Sabah and based on the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS), UMS is ready to cooperate besides being the focal point to MOSTI.

“The university has the infrastructure, facilities, students, lecturers as well as campuses in Sandakan, Labuan and Sikuati Kudat, that are sufficient to fulfill the requirements of carrying out this mission,” he said, after launching the ‘Ops Jelajah Cyber 2.0’ (Explore Cyber Operation 2.0) Sabah Edition at the Lecture Hall Complex, today.

Also present were the Senior Vice-President of Corporate Services Division CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM) Mohd Roslan Ahmad and the Head of Industry and Business Development Department of CSM, Anwer Yusoff. – (fl)

TUESDAY, 09 AUGUST – CyberSecurity Malaysia in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) are jointly organising the ‘Ops Jelajah Cyber 2.0’ starting tomorrow until Thursday.

The programme organised under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) aims to increase cyber security awareness and information among local community.

It is also to help the local community to improve economic wellbeing through the implementation of service, upgrading of skills or innovation that could be implemented in a sustainable manner.

Known as MOSTI Social Innovation (MSI), the programme will be held at the Lecture Hall 2 UMS.

About 30 participants consisting of entrepreneurs, representatives of agencies and government bodies, non-governmental bodies and associations will participate in the programme.

The training programmes will expose participants to various services provided by CyberSecurity Malaysia, such as the Cyber999 Help Centre and the data restore and sanitation service. - (fl)
