The 10 member delegation was led by the club’s President, Datin Baidah Ibrahim who also introduced the new Exco members to the patron during the courtesy call and briefed her on the club’s past and upcoming activities.

Toh Puan Norlidah congratulated the new Exco members and hoped that they would continue to play their role actively, helping to bring KESUMBA to a higher level.

She also highlighted on the need to help the underpriviledged, as part of our social responsibility.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah said the MoU would also support the government’s effort to foster and enhance the Innovation Ecosystem Shift 7, of the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2013-2025.

“This MoU will boost commercialisation with the creation of new industries through the establishment of university production company, opening up new employment opportunities to the community,” he said when speaking at the ceremony held at the Executive Board Room of UMS, yesterday.

He said, UMS research and innovation products also had the potential to be commercialised up to international level.

The MoU signing was represented by Datuk Harun and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation, Professor Dr. Shahril Yusof, whilst MIH was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Wong Wai Sang and the Managing Director, Eric Lo Kian Vui.

Datuk Harun said, the cooperation signed included the sharing of technical expertise from UMS and the commercialisation expertise of MIH.

“In addition, we will also share the use of research facilities and equipment available at UMS and the resources at MIH,” he said.

TUESDAY, 5 APRIL – Public Universities have always been playing an important role in helping the government and people bridge the digital divide in the country.

For this purpose, an International Seminar on Information and Communication Technology for Transformation (IC-ICT4T) 2016 was held at the Postgraduate Auditorium, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), today.

Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah said that this seminar resulting from a bilateral cooperation between UMS and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) was among part of an effort that could contribute towards bridging the digital gap of society.

“Looking at the title of the discussion, it is more focused on E-government and ICT services projects for those communities that lacked such services.  Sustainability of such projects has been a challenge.

“I thought we should use the concept of smart partnerships with government and private agencies in order to optimize this effort, generate high investment and improving the sustainability of planned  ICT activities.

His speech was read by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Professor Dr. D Kamarudin D Mudin.

Datuk Harun said, the programme was also a support to the efforts conducted by the government such as the 1Malaysia Internet Centre (PI1M) and 1Malaysia Wireless Village (KTW1M) that provide internet access to rural communities.

TUESDAY, 5 APRIL – A total of 60 students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently participated in the ‘Showcase of Talent’ organised by the Federal Youth and Sports Department Sabah (JBS) in collaboration with UMS Rakan Muda Secretariat Sabah.

The students had the opportunity to participate in two workshops; Makeup and Basic Photography that was also participated by ten students from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sabah branch.

The one-day programme conducted by the two speakers namely professional make-up artist, Douglas David and photographer from Jari-jari Halus Fotografi, Mohd Daniel Ramadhan Abdullah.

The certificates were presented by Head of the Federal JBS Sabah Rakan Muda Development Division, Hasmah Ajem.

“This short-term workshop enabled IPT youths to recognise and understand the basics of certain skills besides fostering the spirit of teamwork by sharing useful knowledge with each other,” he said during the closing ceremony of the programme.

Hasmah also thanked the Student Affairs Department UMS in helping with the Showcase in Talent programme.

Also present were the Federal JBS Rakan Muda Development Officer, Jovanna Juanis and Khazarudin Kahar. – (fl)
