WEDNESDAY, 12 AUGUST – A female staff of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Security Division, Jaciah Jumilis (picture-standing fifth from right) became the backbone in the Sabah Women Football Squad when they clinched the second spot of the Tun Sharifah Rodziah Cup Championship 2015.

The championship which was held for seven days at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) saw her prowess in steering her team mates, being the captain of the team.

The result, at the group match, Sabah trounced Negeri Sembilan 16-0, Penang 7-0, defeated Sarawak 3-0 before finishing off Selangor with 5-0 aggregate, while sitting comfortably at the top spot.

Jaciah again showed her supremacy in the semi-final match when, along with her team mates thrashed Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) even though they scored earlier before equalised it with 1-1.

PDRM almost confirmed their spot at the finals when they scored another goal before Sabah made another equaliser making the final score at 2-2 until the match ended.

Luck was more on Sabah’s side during the penalty when they scored 4-2, meeting the Malaysian Indian Football Association (MIFA) at the finals.

Jaciah and other players had to battle at the finals as the opponent was quite a match.

Both teams were on attack mode before eventually settling at 1-1 when the final whistle blow.

However, fate was not in Sabah’s favour when the team lost on penalty shoot-out.

Jaciah, when contacted by UMS media expressed her satisfaction with their achievements and thanked the university for their support shown.

“In addition to working under Security Division UMS, I am also determined to continue to bring honour to the university, both nationally and internationally,” aid the player who is also a team member of the national women’s football squad. – (fl)

TUESDAY, 11 AUGUST – The Housewives and Women Staff Club (KESUMBA) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) today handed over a donation amounting to RM2,000 to Aman Palestin, Sabah branch.

The donation was collected from among UMS community in a campaign organised by KESUMBA.

The donation was handed over by the Honorary Secretary of KESUMBA, Norti Sirin to Manager of Aman Palestin Sabah, Jumriati Abdullah.

Also present at the handing over ceremony were Honorable Treasurer, Silawati Khamis; Religious and Welfare Exco, Siti Khadizah Yaakub and President of KESUMBA UMS Labuan International Campus, Hayati Salleh Baihaki.

Aman Palestin is a non-profit organisation established in 2004 to help Palestinians in Palestine, Lubnan and Syria in a collective, planned, continuous and effective way.

MONDAY, 10 AUGUST – The Student Affairs Department (HEP) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently organised a Sports Carnival as a way to foster the sporting spirit among its staff.

Held at UMS Sports Complex, the carnival was participated by departments and centres under the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Student Affairs and Alumni (HEPA), Associate Professor Dr. Ismail Ali.

Known as the HEPA Sports Carnival, it listed four contingents; Black represented by staff of the Special Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor HEPA, Welfare Division, Scholarships and Student Disciplinary as well as the Arts and Culture Division HEP.

Green Contingent was made up of a combination of staff from Sports Centre and Alumni Centre whilst Blue Contingent was from among the staff of the Housing and Hospitality Division HEP.

Yellow Contingent was made up of Counseling and Career Guidance Division, HEP Bursar Zone and Administration Division.

All contingents competed in Volleyball, Netball and Sepak Takraw during the carnival.

The carnival, organised for the first time saw Green Contingent emerged the strongest as they won in two categories; futsal and volleyball.

Netball game was won by the Black Contingent, whilst the Blue Contingent was announced as the winner of sepak takraw.

Also present were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of HEPA, Associate Professor Dr. Ismail Ali and the Head of HEP Department, Azmi Jumat.

The carnival, among others aimed to strengthen relationship among staff, as well as promoting sports activities as an aspect that is emphasised in health care.

Lucky draws were also held during the HEPA Sports Carnival. – MA & SS (fl)

MONDAY, 10 AUGUST – The Kadazandusun Chair and Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language (PPIB) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in collaboration with the Summer Institute of Linguistic (SIL) Malaysia organised a workshop named 'Ethnologue', to review the data on Sabah language.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah, the workshop was timely as a documentation thereby becoming a reference material for the young generations in future.

“Language is a fundamental element in our tradition and culture, thus the continuity of our cultural heritage is very important to the community towards the future,” he said.

He said this in his speech which was delivered by the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW), Professor Dato’ Mohd Hamdan Hj Adnan at the Main Meeting Room of PPIB.

The workshop which ends on Thursday was itself a history as UMS became the first university to be chosen to undertake such a study.

For the record, Ethnologue was initiated by SIL in 1951 by Richard S. Pittman to share the development of language around the world with researchers and language experts. - (fl)
