MONDAY, 8 AUGUST – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through its Centre for Sustainable Minds (PML) and the PML Syllabus and Module Committee members recently conducted a benchmarking visit to the Anglo-Chinese Secondary School Kota Kinabalu.

The delegation led by the Chairman of the PML Syllabus and Module Committee, Dr. Connie Shin @ Connie Cassie Ompok, was accompanied by some lecturers of the Faculty of Psychology and Education, Kindergarten, Pre-school, Day care and Transit Supervisors including the Director of PML, Aidah Noordin and the Head of PML General Administration Division, Faddili Kasin.

UMS delegation was warmly welcomed by the headmaster, senior assistants, Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association and school students, and were then brought to the Resource Room Recording Room , Mini Hall, and also the pre-school classes before being briefed.

Earlier in her speech , Aidah said the purpose of the visit was to create a benchmark for the implementation of the effective Pre-school Teaching and Learning at the school, including learning on the best practices in pre-school governance.

She added that UMS delegation hoped that this visit could show results, be ustainable and could be used as a starting point for the establishment of bilateral cooperation, especially in the field of pre-school education.

Members of the delegation also had the opportunity to see first hand the implementation of the pre-school teaching and learning conducted by a teacher using the ‘Interactive Whiteboard’, a latest technology.

The visit also paved the way for more sharing of ideas in the process of drawing up the syllabus and modules that are relevant with current needs. – (fl)

MONDAY, 8 AUGUST – Efforts by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to develop the Livestock Feed Research Centre at Apin-Apin, Keningau has the full supported of Assistant Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Sabah, Datuk Hj. Sairin Hj. Karno.

Speaking at the opening of the Farmers Entrepreneurship and UMS With-the-people Programme at SMK Apin-Apin recently, he stressed that the livestock industry in Sabah had a huge potential for development.

“Sabah’s strategic position and free from major livestock diseases give us the advantage to develop the livestock industry.  However, the cost of livestock feed seems to be the major barrier as the cost are high resulting in higher operating cost,” he said.

Datuk Sairin also hoped that the establishment of this centre could help the state government in formulating nutritious livestock feed with a more reasonable cost and the use of local food resources available in Sabah.

He also added that the state government through the Sabah Agricultural Policy focused on the development of food security and food production in Sabah.

“With this centre, entrepreneurship programmes added with the support from UMS, the state government expects more young entrepreneurs, especially youths can become successful and well-known entrepreneurs, helping in the development of the agriculture industry in Sabah,” he further added.

FRIDAY, 5 AUGUST – The Haemostasis Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FPSK) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) was recently acknowledged to have met the international standards when it was awarded the MS ISO 15189 Accreditation Certificate by the Department of Standards Malaysia.

The certificate was presented by the Director of the Department of Standards Malaysia, Shaharul Sadri Alwi to the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah in a ceremony held at the Gallery, this morning.

The accreditation meant that the UMS Haemostatis Laboratory is now able to provide services for women in terms of test sample to the end-user, either from government hospitals or from the patient.

Earlier, in his speech, Datuk Harun said that this achievement marked a significant milestone in the history of UMS, where the lab was the first among 100 laboratoies available at the campus to be accorded with the accreditation certificate.

“This effort was initiated in 2013 and after almost two and a half years, finally the UMS Haemostasis Laboratory is given this accreditation, which is indeed a successful event for FPSK in achieving their aspiration with this ‘Certificate of Accreditation in the field of Medicine Test: Haematoloty”, he said.

He said, this recognition has made UMS as one of the centres for academic excellence in the region.

Also present at the ceremony was FPSK Dean, Professor Dr. Zainal Arifin Mustapha and the Director of the Haemostasis Lab FPSK, Associate Professor Dr. Thiruchelvam Ayadurai. – MA (fl)

FRIDAY, 05 AUGUST – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is committed to becoming a university of excellence in teaching and research.

 UMS, through its Registrar Department in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering and Atikah Enterprise joint hands in the construction of Eco Sulap project UMS Peak and ‘Pilot Project Solar Farm’.

The launching ceremony was officiated by the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah at the Institute of Tropical Biology and Conservation (ITBC), today.

In his speech, he said that the Eco Sulap UMS Peak Construction Project was one of the projects that supported tourism activities in  UMS, under the Appreciation of Nature Package.

“This package will highlight the unique features of the natural environment in UMS campus such as the hills at UMS Peak.  Besides, activities such as trekking along the trails of UMS Hill that is  approximately 2.8 kilometres is the highlight of the Eco Sulap UMS Peak, he said.

Datuk Harun said the project would also be expected to provide experience to students and the public through its Nature Education Camp.

He said, the package would involve camping at UMS Hill to provide learning experience and ways to preserve the environment through lectures, workshops, field work, trekking, night walk, appreciation of and observation of nature, mind games, Group Trainings (LDK) and discussion including presentation by students.

Meanwhile, he disclosed that the ‘Pilot Project Solar Farm’ was carried out by Electrical Degree students of the Faculty of Engineering in the use of alternative energy to study the effectiveness and use of solar for electricity generation purposes.

THURSDAY, 04 AUGUST – The Registrar Department of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently held their Monthly Assembly cum Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration in collaboration with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of the Centre  for Sustainable Minds (PML).

Held at Lecture Hall A1, the event was attended by senior staff of the Registrar Department and children from PML accompanied by their parents.

The celebration  was also added by the funny antics of the children, where they were also entertained by two Hari Raya songs performed by the popular local cartoon icon, Upin Ipin.

Earlier, UMS Registrar, No’man Hj Ahmad in his welcoming speech said that the event was held to foster better relationship amongst staff of the Registrar Department, parent s and children of PML.

“It corresponds to the chosen theme of the celebration, ‘Muhibbah Aidilfitri in the Campus’,” he added.

The event served a variety of delicious Hari Raya food prepared by staff and the PTA members of PML. – (fl
