THURSDAY, 5 MAY – To support the sustainability of EcoCampus, the Student Affairs Department Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is continuing the Cycling Around Campus Programme that has started since February until today.

According to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Associate Professor Dr. Ismail Ali, this campaign was organised to encourage campus community minimise the use of motor vehicles inside the campus by using bicycles as an alternative transportation to attend lectures, mosque or even the library.

“Such programme can bring awareness to the campus community in respecting the environment by reducing the overloading of carbon monoxide emissions from the engines of vehicles.

“Besides that, this programme also aims to cultivate a healthy lifestyle by adopting cycling as a daily routine,” he said.

According to him, the campaign would be implemented at UMS Main Campus, UMS Labuan International Campus and the Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture, Sandakan coordinated by the Student Affairs Department in collaboration with the Sports Centre and UMS Residential Colleges.

To date, a total of 100 bicycles were distributed to three residential colleges, namely Residential College Tun Mustapha, Residential College Tun Fuad and Residential College E. – (fl)

WEDNESDAY, 4 MAY – the Entrepreneurship and Culture Carnival, which started yesterday came alive featuring various activities including the sale and purchase of various products and foodstuff.

Held at the Parade Ground (Padang Kawad), the carnival which is held until Friday is a combination of three events namely Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship Enculturation (APK), Kaamatan Festival and Tiong Hua Festival.

A survey done by UMS Media found that visitors comprising students, staff and the public continued to visit the stalls put up at the carnival.

Among the major attractions included the innovation by students in the preparation of a variety of delicious and attractive food .

The media crew were also impressed by the uniqueness of the handicrafts crafted by the students and sold at reasonable prices.

Meanwhile, Sports Science Programme second year student, Mohd Syaffezh Edham Ahmed when met said that the programme was very helpful especially in giving exposure to students and applying good communication technique with customers.

“At the same time, we can also learn marketing strategies thereby applying the entrepreneurial values in ourselves,” he said at his booth selling grass jelly milk coconut water.

He said the response to their drink sold with another four other friends had been very encouraging with the supplies running out by lunch time on the first day.

More than 150 outlets and exhibition stalls were  set up at the carnival. – SS (fl)

WEDNESDAY, 4 MAY – A total of 52 students of the Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently organised a Science and Technology Education Community Programme at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tambunan.

According to the programme supervisor, Dr. Siew Nyet Moi @ Sopiah Abdullah, the programme among others aimed at providing support to rural students to join the invention activities to solve problems in a creative and innovative way through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

“A total of 50 Form Four Pure Science students of SMK Tambunan and SMK Desa Wawasan were directly involved in the programme that focused on group activities,” she said.

She said, the first STEM activities were based on the El Nino phenomenon and saw students worked in groups of five to create a model with the green technology concept to mitigate the impact of El Nino on plants, the environment and on themselves.

“The second activity was to build windmills using wind or water as the source of alternative energy that is free, clean and sustainable (renewable energy),” added Dr. Siew.

She explained that each group used existing knowledge and past experiences to design a water-pumping equipment to tackle the problem of irrigation in paddy fields in Tambunan.

“Based on the feedback received through interviews, the students said that daily living experience and revolution affects the way they generate lots of ideas in order to produce a variety of designs to solve a given problem.

“Through their participation in such activities, they would better understand the concept of science and apply  them in their designs thereby enhancing their creativity and expanding their imagination,” she added.

THURSDAY, 29 APRIL – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through its Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting (FPEP) recently organised a workshop focusing on the economy and business activities in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZONE).

The two-day workshop also involved the Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) and the National Security Council (MKN).

At the opening of the workshop, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah, Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun said the Economic Development and Investment Authority (SEDIA) would continue to attract investment to the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC) despite the challenging economic situation.

“More efforts will be done with emphasis on improving the efficiency of the logistics sector by enhancing infrastructure related to land integration including water and air services,” he said.

His speech was read by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Ginun Yangus.

He also added that the discussion and research on the economic sector in the ESSZONE area should continue so that development of the area could be improved.

FRIDAY, 29 APRIL – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through the Student Affairs Department recently held a handing-over ceremony of assistance to fire victims of Kampung Titingan, Tawau.

UMS also had during the ceremony handed over eye lenses to disabled students with vision problem.

The aid was delivered by the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Associate Professor Dr. Ismail Ali, at the Chancellery Building, UMS.

At the event, Teoh Jia Long received vision aids, whilst Muhd Faizal Alimudin and Fatimah Binti Asmuni, both fire victims that happened in Tawau recently were given financial help to ease the burden of the affected family. – MA (fl)
