sukarelawan hari MPPJUMAAT, 01 MEI - Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar (MPP) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) mempelawa mahasiswa untuk bersama-sama menyemarakkan Hari Terbuka Sukarelawan UMS.
 
Menurut Presiden MPP, Alfarid Abraham, hari terbuka itu telah bermula sejak 27 April lalu dan akan berakhir pada 03 Mei ini.
 
“Pelbagai aktiviti kita jalankan sepanjang tempoh program ini yang merupakan inisiatif MPP dalam mempromosikan aktiviti luar bilik kuliah bagi menambah penglibatan rakan mahasiswa,” katanya kepada media UMS.
 
Ujarnya, aktiviti-aktiviti yang dijalankan adalah berbentuk sukarelawan bertujuan untuk memupuk serta menerapkan budaya sukarelawan dalam diri mahasiswa.
 
“Kami tidak menjanjikan perubahan besar pada diri anda untuk menjadi sukarelawan, namun kami sediakan platform yang kami yakin dan percaya mampu mencorak semangat kesukarelawan yang mapan.
 
“Bersama kami jadikan kampus UMS sebagai pusat tarbiah yang melahirkan sukarelawan yang menepati kehendak agama, bangsa dan negara,” tambahnya lagi.

Rentas Borneo PelepasanTHURSDAY, 30 APRIL – Members of the university must be versatile and should not spend too much time in classroom alone.

Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah said, steps taken by the academics and administrative staff to reach out to others in remote areas was a noble effort and should be emulated.

“It will not only be able to reach rural communities but even produce greater range of ideas in order to help empower rural communities to increase awareness on academic achievement,” he said this when launching the 2nd Rentas Borneo at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, this morning.

Datuk Harun also thanked volunteers from UMS 4WD Club who was the main organiser.

On behalf of UMS, he thanked all those who had helped in organising this challenging programme thus bringing the name of UMS to the interior of Sabah namely Pagalungan.

“Indeed, UMS hopes that each programme organised would bring an impact to the community and the people of the Land Below the Wind.

“Being at the top leadership of the university, I place high confidence that UMS staff would always place priority in doing community work,” Datuk Harun added.

The opening ceremony of the 2nd Rentas Borneo will be officiated by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and Member of Parliament for Pensiangan, Tan Sri Joseph Kurup, on 2 May at Pagalungan.

The Rentas Borneo expedition last year saw UMS involving 26 4WD vehicles crossing Beaufort, Sipitang, Tenom, Keningau, Nabawan, Kalabakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu, Tg. Labian, Sandakan, Beluran, Paitan, Pitas, Kota Marudu before ending in Kota Kinabalu. – SS (fl)

MPP kepimpinan KBTHURSDAY, 30 APRIL – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Student Representatives Council (MPP) recently organised a programme called ‘Leader to Lead’ at Taun Gusi Secondary School (SMK).

MPP President, Alfarid Abraham said, the three-day programme received encouraging response from the students of SMK Inanam, SMK Narinang, SMK Arshad and SMK Taun Gusi.

This programme becomes a platform for UMS MPP as a body or association focusing on leadership to apply the leadership value to all participants of the programme,” he told media when met after the programme.

He said that each activity was designed not only to test the participants’ minds but foster the spirit of cooperation as a group.

“It is consistent with the objectives of the programme, to produce a student leader who has the physical and mental endurance to face any challenge that comes, thus able to lead an efficient and professional organisation,” explained Alfarid.

Themed ‘Lead for the Next Generation’, the programme held for the first time was officiated by the Head of Academic Sector of the Sabah Education Department, Datuk Dr. Mohd Kassim Hj Mohd Ibrahim who is also a member of UMS Board of Directors. – SS (fl)

mana keadilanTHURSDAY, 30 APRIL – A “Where is the Voice of Justice” programme was recently organised by the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to encourage their students to think out of the box.

The freedom to criticise, brainstorm and express critical views by the students clearly showed their experience through the expression of more mature minds during the question and answer session.

A three panel member consisting of third year students, Wan Hasmie Wan Zu, Nurza Safida Sapawi and Nor Amiza Abdul Wahad and a moderator, Mohd Sarifudin Othman also provided an in-depth analysis on the issue of justice, besides answering questions in a creative, critical and comprehensive way.

Touching on current issues pertaining to justice internally and abroad, the programme was seen to have an impact on increasing knowledge for the students and to express their long suppressed views and unwrapping all questions related to justice.

Also present at the programme were FKSW lecturers, Lokman Abdul Samad, Suhaimi Mohd Yasin, Saniah Ahmad and Mohd Shahrudin Zainal and a tutor in Writing, Jasman Bandar who were on hand to guide the students in organising such programme that would enhance thinking among students. - (fl)

Seaweed 1WEDNESDAY, 29 APRIL – Chairman of the Board of Directors of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Tun Zaki Tun Azmi recently paid a visit to UMS Seaweed cultivation in the waters of Semporna, Sabah.

During the visit, he expressed satisfaction over the developments of the seaweed cultivation and farming in Semporna as it helped derived good income for the local communities involved.  

“UMS should have a partnership programme with the local communities so as to garner more productivity, a win-win situation for both sides,” he suggested.

Meanwhile, Head of the Seaweed Research Unit, Associate Professor Dr. Suhaimi Md Yasir said, the many seaweed species farmed at Semporna were on high demand, adding that they produced about 100 to 200 metric tonnes every 45 days.

“In keeping to its EcoCampus University status, UMS uses marine-polymer instead of plastic bottles to farm seaweed thus protecting the corals underneath the sea,” he added.

The seaweed cultivation started in 2010 and headed by Dr. Suhaimi who is also a lecturer from the Faculty of Sciences and Natural Resources.– FL
