aquaculture tourism

An exclusive section has been organized for "aquaculture tourism". A "deep reef tank" containing 11,000 liters of seawater houses high value species such as groupers, snapper and seabass. In the wild, these species have been overfished and because of their high market value, they continue to face fishing pressure. Their captive breeding in the hatchery supports the aquaculture industry which in turn could lessen the pressure on the wild stocks. Grouper hybrids produced for the first time in the world at the hatchery of Borneo Marine Research Institute received so much of public interest that they have been maintained in the aquarium for the curious visitors. They are not found in the wild and thus draw a growing number of visitors seeking a glimpse of this spectacular life. The message of aquaculture tourism to develop a sense of respect towards the resources which are exploited for seafood and concern for their sustainability.
