    CORALS

The museum houses over 60 species of corals from 9 families and on display are 8 newly identified species collected during Expedition around Sabah waters. Corals are marine invertebrates. They secrete calcium carbonate to create hard structures that provide shelter to many marine organisms in the sea. Within the corals live the photosynthesizing symbiotic algae called zooxanthallae. In the presence of light these plants produce food, a major part of which nourishes the corals - a mutual contribution for providing the comfort of home that the corals offer to these tiny life forms.
