Universitas Tanjungpura, Pontianak, Indonesia (UNTAN) visited the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy (FBEA) at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) on March 4.

The primary objective of this benchmark visit was to explore potential collaboration avenues in academic activities, research endeavors, and postgraduate opportunities at UMS.

The delegation, led by Dr Rosyadi, S.E., M.Si, included over 20 postgraduate students.

They were received by Dr Noor Fzlinda Fabeil, Deputy Dean for Students Affairs and Postgraduate at UMS.

Dean of FBEA UMS, Associate Professor Dr Mohd Rahimie Abd Karim, extended a warm welcome to the UNTAN delegates, whose institution was established in 1959.

Both parties sealed their commitment to collaboration by signing a Letter of Intent, outlining plans for academic exchange activities, joint research initiatives, and facilitating mobility for staff and students.

The session was joined by Dr Izyanti Awang Razli, Postgraduate by Research Coordinator, and Dr Allif Anwar, Postgardue Coursework Coordinator, and Associate Professor Dr Zaiton Osman, former dean at UMS Labuan International Campus.

During the visit, Datu Razali Datu Eranza and Andy Lee Chen Hiung shared insights into FBEA's mobility program.

As coordinators for mobility programs, they elaborated on their experiences in managing inbound mobility programs from various countries including China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, South Korea, Gabon, and Cambodia, resulting in FBEA winning active mobility awards for six consecutive years.

The day's agenda also included a session for postgraduate students from both universities, facilitated by Andrew Sean, head of the postgraduate students' community association.

This session aimed to foster an exchange of experiences, explore potential collaborations, and discuss future activities.

Dr Rosyadi and the UNTAN postgraduate students were captivated by the scenic landscape of UMS and the splendor of the renowned 'Pink Mosque' on campus.

Before departing for Sarawak the following day, they enjoyed a comprehensive campus tour.

This collaborative endeavor marks a significant step towards enhancing academic cooperation and fostering mutual growth between UMS and Tanjungpura University, Indonesia

 

In a vibrant exchange of cultures and knowledge, students from Hosei University of Japan embarked on a whirlwind tour of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) on 2nd March 2024.

The visit provided an excellent opportunity for both sets of students to immerse themselves in each other’s cultures, deepen their understanding of different perspectives and forge lasting connections.

The Faculty of Science and Humanities (FSSK) Mobility Coordinator, Dr. Trixie Tangit emphasized the importance of initiatives by the mobility program in strengthening connections between UMS and Hosei University.

“Through activities such as summer school programs and fostering deep connections through visits, both institutions can aim to build a foundation for future collaborative endeavours.

“We are proud that Abu Hurairah and Karen Adelyn, our students from the International Relations Programme, FSSK took the initiative to organize a campus tour and truly, the day-long journey was marked by camaraderie, discovery and mutual appreciation,” she said.

Throughout their visit, the Hosei University students engaged in various activities, ranging from exploring UMS’s campus and facilities to participating in cultural exchange and academic discussions.

“Such exchanges not only enrich the educational experience of the students involved but also contribute to fostering mutual respect, collaboration and friendship between institutions and across borders,” she added.

The group also had a chance to visit UMS Aquarium and Museum Marine, Outdoor Development Centre (ODEC), Pinakol Stairs, UMS Clock Tower and the picturesque UMS Mosque also known as Pink Mosque, one of Kota Kinabalu’s must-visit place.

Department of Economics, Hosei University lecturer, Professor Dr. Yasuo Yakatani expressed his gratitude, emphasizing the effectiveness of the day’s organising and the warm hospitality extended by UMS students.

The University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Alumni Centre recently organized a hi-tea for about ISO alumni from around Kota Kinabalu.

The program was aimed to celebrate the spirit of love for alma mater and to create good networking among alumni.

Among those present were the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs & Alumni) Associate Prof Dr Raman Nordin representing UMS Vice Chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr. Kasim Mansor, and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic & International) Prof Dr Shahril Yusof.

The event, which took place in a relaxed manner at the Chancellor's Hall Square near the UMS lake, succeeded in recalling the memories of some of the alumni who had gone through their studies.

Some of the alumni who were met during the ceremony thought that this kind of meeting program should be continued from time to time as a platform for them to meet and socialize with fellow alumni as well as university management and staff.

An alumnus from the Faculty of Education and Psychology, Mohd Rasmalyzan Abd Rashad said a program like this can be the best platform for alumni to share information and convey their views to the university management.

Mohd Rasmalyzan is the Chief Operating Officer of UOR Food Industries Sdn Bhd.

Another participant, Abdul Haidy Abdul Hamid from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities in 2000, hopes that such a program can be held regularly so that the alumni can meet with fellow alumni, the management and the existing students. Abdul Haidy currently is administration head at UMS.

This opinion is also supported by Amir Shah Noor Ahmad, alumnus of the Faculty of Finance & International in 2006 who is working as a Diplomatic Administration Officer at MKN Sabah.

The alumni who attended the event were warmly welcomed by the director of the UMS Alumni Centre, Dr Arif Kamisan Pusiran and the staff of the Alumni Centre as hosts at the ceremony.

They were treated to a delicious evening meal and entertained by music from a busker who is also a UMS alumnus.

 

UMS closes deals to commercialise its innovation to three companies via intellectual property (IP) licensing.

The momentous Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) marks a significant milestone in the university’s mission to translate academic discoveries into real-world applications that benefit society.

Through this strategic partnership, UMS will collaborate with Flamoff Industries (M) Sdn. Bhd., SF Green Sdn. Bhd., and Petrogaya Sdn. Bhd., to bring cutting-edge research to market, fostering innovation and economic growth.

The agreement encompasses the exclusive licensing of intellectual property rights, enabling the development, production, distribution, and sales of UMS’s innovations.

Assistant Vice Chancellor (Strategic) of UMS, Professor Dr. Mohammad Saffree Jeffree who represent the Vice Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Kasim Mansor expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration stating the licensing agreement exemplifies UMS’s commitment to advancing knowledge and driving positive change.

“By harnessing the power of collaboration with Flamoff Industries (M) Sdn. Bhd., SF Green Sdn. Bhd., and Petrogaya Sdn. Bhd., we can amplify the impact of our research and innovations, ultimately benefiting communities and industries worldwide.

“Flamoff Industries (M) Sdn. Bhd is thrilled to bring UMS’s innovative fire protection products to the market.

“The innovative fire protection additive called ‘PhosphaTania’ was developed by ChM. Ts. Dr. Zuhair Jamain and Associate Prof. ChM. Dr. Moh Pak Yan, both are from Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (FSSA) UMS. “PhosphaTania” is the non-corrosive formulation for fire extinguisher aimed at saving individual life from a fire incident and protecting the environment at the same time,” he said.

Meanwhile he said, SF Green Sdn. Bhd will bring UMS’ consumer products “Vivify” to the market.

“Armed with the popularity of the brand “Vivify” and its renown inventor, Professor Dr. Shafiquzzaman Siddiquee of Biotechnology Research Institute (IPB) UMS, a top scientist in the world, the company is optimistic that “Vivify” products can compete with the other well-established consumer product brands in the market.

“The company believes the use of organic ingredients in Vivify products is a strong attraction in the market for its health and effectiveness reasons,” he added.

Another company Petrogaya Sdn. Bhd is poised to enter the poultry industry with UMS’ popular innovation called “A-Yamli” developed by Ag. Ahmad Mohd Yunus, a renown innovator from the Faculty of Tropical Forestry (FPT).

Saffree said “A-Yamli” is a popular brand of premium chicken fed with specially formulated feed supplement containing Tongkat Ali, a well-established medicinal plant.

“These three licensing agreement signifies a mutual commitment to leveraging expertise and resources to propel innovation forward.

“By bridging academia and industry, UMS and Flamoff Industries (M) Sdn. Bhd., SF Green Sdn. Bhd., and Petrogaya Sdn. Bhd., aim to accelerate the transition of research from the lab to the marketplace, driving economic growth and societal progress,” Saffree said.

These commercialisation of UMS Intellectual Property are facilitated by the Innovation and Commercialisation Management Center (ICMC) of UMS.

The Director of ICMC, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jidon @ Adrian Janaun expressed his zeal and enthusiasm to continuously encourage and support UMS researchers to strive for innovation and commercialisation that will bring greater benefit to Malaysia as well as the world.

UMS Legal Advisor, Awang Suhaizam Bungso; UMS Chief Librarian, Md Sazali Md Salleh; UMS Chief Digital Officer, Profesor Dr. Ag. Asri Ag. Ibrahim were also present in the ceremony and witnessed the exchange of MoAs.

 

In an enriching collaboration facilitated by Hannam University's LINC 3.0 program, delegates from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) indulged in a vibrant cultural exchange at the Daedeok District Youth Bunker in South Korea.

Led by Professor Peter Lee, advised by Professor Won Gu-Hwan, and supported by the Honorable Mr. Choi Chung-Gyu, Mayor of Dae Deok District, the initiative aimed to foster global industry-academia cooperation.

The event showcased an array of meaningful activities tailored for the visiting UMS lecturers and students.

Among the highlights were captivating music performances by Ms. Jo Hye-Won, Ms. Bak Su-Hyun, and Ms. Song Ye-Hyeon, accompanied by K-pop dance lessons under the guidance of Ms. Lee Da-Seul, a popular choreographer.

Mayor Choi Chung-Gyu, in his welcoming address, emphasized the significance of cultural immersion and academic collaboration through programs like the Global Capstone Program.

The Daedeok-gu Youth Bunker, operating under the vision of enriching the lives of young people, served as the ideal setting for this exchange.

Situated in the basement of the Daedeok District Office, the Youth Bunker epitomizes a space designed for fostering communication and cultural exchange among youth.

Open on weekdays and Saturdays, the facility offers various amenities free of charge, including performance venues, book cafes, and meeting spaces.

Associate Professor Dr. Mohd. Rahimie Abd Karim, Dean of UMS's Faculty of Business, Economics, and Accountancy, expressed gratitude towards Hannam University, Professor Won Gu-Hwan, Mayor Choi Chung-Gyu, Professor Peter Lee, and all involved parties for facilitating this enriching experience.

Among the UMS delegates were Rosle Mohidin, lecturer at UMS's Faculty of Business, Economics, and Accountancy, who also served as the head of the delegation and Director of AACSB, and Datu Razali Datu Eranza, International Mobility Coordinator at UMS's Faculty of Business, Economics, and Accountancy.

UMS Students including Ahmad Zaid Mohamad Nasir, Carl Chan Teck Hong, Metlye Metter, Nabila Qistina Robian, Nina Natasha Baqiah Abu Bakar, Nisrina Humaira Rasyidi, and Sitti Salmiya Binti Ombra.

Apart from learning K-Pop dance, Nina and Salmiyah also performed Igal-Igal dance (Lampa Lampa Pisang by Den Bisa) for Korean choreographer Ms. Lee Da-Seul to participate. Rosle Mohidin performed the song 'Sayang Sayang Kinabalu', with Koreans joining in to dance.

The Koreans expressed that participating in the Igal-Igal and 'Sayang Sayang Kinabalu' dances was a remarkable experience, as everyone enthusiastically joined in to dance along.

The collaboration not only enriched the academic journey of the UMS delegates but also strengthened ties between institutions, fostering a deeper understanding of cultural diversity and academic cooperation.

As initiatives like these continue to flourish, they underscore the importance of global partnerships in shaping the future of academia and industry.
