perahu nagaMONDAY, 1 DECEMBER – Malaysian Cocoa Department excelled at the recent UMS Dragon Boat Race 2014 organised by the Centre for Co-Curriculum and Student Development (PKPP), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

The race was held at ODEC, UMS and saw the Cocoa Department team emerged as the winner for the men’s category, bringing home the prize money of RM300.

1st Runner-up was UMS team D’Force whilst the Association of Youth Kg. Darau took the third spot.

Both teams received prizes of RM200 and RM150 respectively.

The Mixed Category was also won by the Malaysian Cocoa Department who once again received cash prize of RM300.

N’Force City Hall team took the second spot whilst the third spot was won by the team HA19 Consulenza who received RM150 for their effort.

All winners also received a hamper and certificate.

Meanwhile, PKPP Sports Coordinator, Hasnol Nordin said a total of 12 teams participated, eight for the men’s category and four for the mixed category.

He was speaking on behalf of the Director of PKPP, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Raman Noordin who added that team spirit and the determination of each committee for the Dragon Boat Course for Semester 1 2014/2015 Session was the key for the success in the organising of the competition.

borneo artMONDAY, 1 DECEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) always give serious attention to research and development with creative artistic heritage tradition.

UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah said that it was important to continue the legacy of eastern culture, particularly in the context of Sabah as a state in Borneo Island.

“Not many people know about the uniqueness of Sabah formed through the agreement of more than 31 ethnic groups representing diverse religions, cultures and customs of the artistic heritage inherited until now.

“This is the strength of the state, its unity in diversity, and I really hope that art researchers can mobilise their efforts to study the composition of art and culture produced from this mixed background,” he said at the Borneo Art Exhibition at Suria Sabah Shopping Complex, Kota Kinabalu. His text was read by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Dr. Shahril Yusuf.

According to Datuk Dr. Harun, the exhibition themed ‘Sabah Tanah Airku’ was the result of a study translated through the combination of technology and non-technology of visual arts such as painting, film and documentary, animation art, sculpture and ceramics.

The two-day exhibition organised by the Faculty of Humanities, Art and Heritage (FKSW) was also attended by the consort of the Head of State who is also the patron of the Nur Jauhar Charity Foundation Fund, Toh Puan Hajah Norlidah Tan Sri Datuk RM Jasni.

Over 80 creative arts created and innovated by the undergrads of FKSW were exhibited. The exhibited works were sold and proceeds of the sales will be donated to Nur Jauhar Charity Foundation Fund. – MA (fl)

hope umsFRIDAY, 28 NOVEMBER – Recognising that many among our society require welfare assistance, a group of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) undergrads had organised a charity project recently to help those in need.
 
With the theme ‘One Love One Hope’, the Public Relations Undergrads group along with the International Business Programme, Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy conducted the HOPE project to create awareness and provide assistance to People with Special Needs (OKU).
 
According to the project director, Lai Chiau Yi, the project received support from several private companies that provide sponsorship in the form of daily necessities such as food, stationery, medicines and so on.
 
“Support from private companies towards this charitable projects like this is a positive development and are able to make an impact in the form of intensified activities to safeguard the welfare of the disabled and less fortunate,” he said.
 
Under the leadership of the Public Relations lecturer, Charlie Albert Lasuin, the group conducted the HOPE project by organising a cleaning activity around the TOLUMIS Care Centre, Tuaran.
 
They also spent time mingling, besides having fun group activities with the residents of the centre which consisted of people with disabilities.
 
The group comprised 35 UMS undergrads and also conducted community service activity at the Sabah Cheshire Home, Likas. – MA(fl) -

loa sporFRIDAY, 28 NOVEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through the Unit for Sustainable Palm Oil Research (SPOR) received funding of RM153,200 to conduct research into the effectiveness of organic acids in Ganoderma Boninense, a type of fungus that causes the Basel Stem Rot (BSR) disease on palm trees.

The funds donated by two companies pioneering in the local palm oil industry, Kam Cheong Plantations Sdn Bhd and Agri-Biotech Marketing Sdn Bhd at a ceremony to sign a letter of intent with UMS in Biotechnology Research Institute Auditorium.

UMS Registrar, Datuk Abdullah Mohd Said representing UMS signed the letter of intent with the two companies, while Kam Cheong Plantation represented by its director, Cheong Sun Yan and Agri-Biotech Marketing represented by its director, Lawrence Ang.

Earlier, Datuk Abdullah who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah said BSR disease spreads on palm trees in the Southeast Asia had resulted in a loss of nearly USD500 million in a year in Malaysia.

“Thus, SPOR’s proactive efforts to cooperate with the oil palm industry players in finding ways to address the issues and current issues are very important and beneficial to the industry,” he said. – MA (fl)

niosh programFRIDAY, 28 NOVEMBER - UMS become the host to Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Programme by the Malaysia National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently.
 
With ‘Strengthening PERKESO contribution through Occupational Safety and Health Administration Management Mechanism’ theme, the programme was organized to apply OSH aspects to those who are involved in land public transportation especially the buses services.
 
The programme was organize due to the statistic reports from Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) shown increasing figure on accidents especially buses since year 2010-2012.
 
The programme was also giving awareness and understanding on the importance of mannered driving through basic Occupational Safety and Health Administration Management demonstration techniques related to driving as stated in the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994.
 
The programme was held at Cafe De'Sireh, UMS Chancellery Building attracted more than 30 participations from local transportation companies’ representative and UMS staff.
