ForumMalaysiaWEDNESDAY, 24 SEPTEMBER – The Dewan Resital (Recital Hall) of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) was almost full filled by 500 students from the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) to attend the Premier Forum themed ’51 Tahun Pembentukan Malaysia: Bicara Tentang Sabah’ (51 Years Formation of Malaysia: a Talk on Sabah).

The forum organised by the History Programme students of the faculty aimed at providing a clearer view to campus community on Sabah from historical perspective.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the forum, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Dr. Shahril Yusof expressed the importance of learning History subject so as not to be easily duped.

“The History subject should be learned by all of us, regardless of primary or secondary school level, regardless of science or arts stream,” he told those present, representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun bin Abdullah.

He added that whatever happened in history, it should be able to create a Malaysian nation that was stronger and developed in various fields.

“History gives us an opportunity to organise our steps and to make better planning for the future of the nation,” he added.

He also advised students to equip themselves with knowledge before stating their views on the social network sites which could invite sedition.

The forum featured four panels, namely Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bilcher Bala, Dr. Ramzah Dambul, Dr. Zaini Othman and Baszley Bee Basrah Bee. Also present was the Dean of FKSW, Prof. Dato’ Mohd. Hamdan Hj. Adnan who acted as the moderator. – HH (fl)

UMSIDBWEDNESDAY, 24 SEPTEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently held a meeting with representatives from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) to discuss matters relating to international students sponsored by IDB UMS.

According to a statement issued by the Centre for International Affairs (PHEA) UMS, the discussion chaired by the Head of Chancellery Department, No’man Haji Ahmad among others touched on lodging application for international students during semester break.

According to the statement, the main objective of the discussion was to streamline the management of international students sponsored by the banking institution in UMS.

So far, IDB had sponsored 20 international students of UMS from Myanmar, Tanzania, Malawi and Vietnam.

At the meeting, IDB was represented by several staff members headed by the Chief of the IDB Scholarship Programme, Dato’ Dr. Malek Shah Mohd Yusoff, while UMS was represented by Acting Director of PHEA, Molly Donna Awang Sham and representatives from JFPIU involved. – ZMD (fl)

FPL 1TUESDAY, 23 SEPTEMBER – A talk jointly organised by the EcoCampus Management Centre and Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture (FPL) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) was jointly organised at UMS Sandakan branch Campus recently.

With the theme Waste and Landscape Management, the talk which was attended by more than 120 participants from among lecturers, staff including Third and Forth Year students was officiated by its Dean, Prof. Dr. Wan Mohamad Wan Othman.

In his speech, he touched on the potential of UMS Sandakan campus in exploiting renewable energy such as solar energy.

Hence, he said FPL was ready to cooperate and be involved with activities based on sustainability organised by EcoCampus Management Centre.

The knowledge-sharing programme was presented by Dr. Nobuyuki Tsuji, a well-known researcher in the field of Sustainable Science and Waste Management from Fukuoka, Japan; as well as FPL, Shahida Mohd Sharif. – MA (fl)

sukan kml umskalTUESDAY, 23 SEPTEMBER – Students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) topped three sports in a competition organised by the Labuan Matriculation College (KML) recently.

The competition held at KML saw UMSKAL emerged champion in men’s and women’s volleyball as well as basketball, and runner-up for football.

UMSKAL Youth and Sports Officer, Gabriel Moinjil who represented the campus Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murnizam Haji Halik congratulated all students who won in the three events.

He hoped that the victory would boost their morale to continue to achieve success in other competitions either at university, Federal Territory of Labuan, national or international levels.

The tournament was held for three days and was officiated by KML Director, Sawang @ Rizal Amit. – SS (fl)

matematik perdanaTUESDAY, 22 SEPTEMBER – A total of 274 students from 21 secondary schools around Kota Kinabalu will be camping for three days at the Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (FSSA) premises in conjunction with the UMS Prime Math Camp 2014 recently.

The programme organised by FSSA also received support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports Sabah (KBSS), Kota Kinabalu District Education Office, and the Youth and Sports Department of Sabah besides support from the Sabah Youth Council and Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) Sabah.

The closing ceremony of the camp was officiated by FSSA Dean, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Baba Musta who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah.

In his speech, he explained that the math camp held on UMS campus ground was to provide opportunities to students to enjoy campus atmosphere thus giving encouragement and motivation for them to set foot into the ivory tower one day.

“Hopefully, the participants would be able to obtain beneficial experience and be able to instill interest in mathematics and to shape their minds to think critically,” he said.

He also gave away prizes to the best male participant, Mohammad Hibri Syakiran from Sekolah Menengah (SM) Sains Sabah and Mary Valentina Christopher from SM St. Francis Convent for best female participant.

Also present was Deputy Permanent Secretary of KBSS Haji Awang Damit Haji Ag Anak and Chairman of the Prime Mathematics Camp UMS 2014, Dr. Abdullah Bade. – SS (fl)
