FRIDAY, 02 MAY – Despite the increase in public awareness nowadays on the importance of health, there are still individuals who do not practice it.

The weight gain problem caused by the accumulation of fat has become common particularly among middle-aged women.

Thus, Residential College Cemerlang Dinamik (Kolej CD), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently organised a Zumba Programme and a talk on Health Care for the residential undergrads.

According to a statement released by the college, the organisation of the programme was held for the first time which emphasised on the aspect of fitness among undergrads of Kolej CD.

The statement added that zumba fitness dance routine emphasised on fitness and health according to the rhythm of the dance mix of salsa, mambo, Latin hip-hop where each session would be able to burn between 500-1000 calories (45-60 minutes).

The Zumba Programme and Health Care talks facilitated about 60 participants to be more aware of their health and fitness.

The session which lasted over an hour was conducted by Herba Life, Shariffah Hazariah assisted by several members of the group. – ZMD (fl)

SKTMTHURSDAY, 01 MAY – The existence of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has a big impact since its inception 20 years ago, in the development of education in Sabah.

Various research activities were conducted to help the government in solving problems facing society in the country particularly in Sabah.

Recently, UMS through its Energy Research Unit (ERU) had organised a Colloquium on Conventional, New and Renewable Energy Technology (CNRET) 2014 to discuss problems on resource requests which were increasing.

According to UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah; Sabah was facing a shortage on energy supply, as such renewable energy could play an important role in addressing the problem.

“Renewable energy such as biomass, hydro, geothermal, wind and solar energy can be seen as an alternative power supply to solve the problems in Sabah,” he said in his speech at the opening of the seminar.

His speech was read by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Prof. Dr. Shariff Abdul Kadir Omang Al-Haj.

Datuk Harun added, UMS welcomed stakeholders to explore and use green energy in future thus supporting the university’s step in developing sustainable energy for an improved living condition.

The one-day seminar also attracted the Managing Director of Leonics Co. Ltd. Thailand, Dr. Wuthipong Suponthana and 12 presenters from related agencies in Malaysia. – ZMD (fl)

yahai2WEDNESDAY, 30 APRIL – Undergrads under the Faculty of Business Economics and Accounting programme, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will be organising a community programme at Kampung Sinua Sook, Keningau starting tomorrow.

Speaking in a statement, lecturer and Programme Coordinator, Juliana Anak Langgat said; the location of community service was at the Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sinua and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tulid Keningau.

“It, among others create opportunities for all undergrads to experience real life living in rural areas as well as train them to apply knowledge and to foster effective communication techniques to the community,” she said in the statement.

Obviously, the programme will be filled with motivational talks for Year Six students who will be sitting for the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) or Primary School Assessment Test this year.

“In addition, all undergrads will clean and decorate SK Sinua classrooms and library. I believe these activities will inspire the rural students to raise their own education standard,” she added.

Meanwhile, the ‘Yahai Obimpoduli’ Programme statement also said that a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or Malaysian Education Certificate motivational session at SMK Tulid would be organised focussing on upper secondary school students to shape their direction after finishing formal schooling.

Thus, the three-day programme welcomed sincere donations in the form of stationery, books and teaching aids that are appropriate with the syllabus of the primary and secondary schools.

Fandyi JuaraWEDNESDAY, 30 APRIL – President of the Student Representatives Council (MPP) of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Fandyi Sanizan Jurup emerged champion in the Public Speaking Competition organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports recently.

With the title ‘1Malaysia Basic Formation of a Nation’, Fandyi captured the hearts of the judges and brought home the top prize money of RM500, trophy and certificate.

He will also represent Sabah at the national competition held at the Youth Festival in the Federal Territory of Putrajaya, 24–27 May 2014.

The second and third placings were won by Wan Zainudin Aspar and Mohd Fadli respectively from the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). Wan received a cash prize of RM300, trophy and certificate while Fadli received RM200, trophy and certificate.

Meanwhile, when contacted by reporters, Fandyi expressed his gratefulness with the results.

“This success could not be achieved without the support of the university, particularly from the Department of Student Affairs and Alumni,” said Fandyi who hails from Ranau.

He was determined to bring honour to UMS again at the national competition.

Hari Siswi CDWEDNESDAY, 30 APRIL – Various programmes were held in conjunction with Undergrads Day recently which was organised by Residential College Cemerlang Dinamik (Kolej CD).

Among the focus was a cooking competition in collaboration with ADABI and Petronas.

There were also sessions on skin care and beauty with Mary Kay and Zumba, besides a health talk by Herbalife.

The programme, held for the first time was intended by Kolej CD to recognise the role of women in national development.

The closing ceremony was done by the Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Hajah Jainab Datuk Seri Panglima Hj Ahmad Ayid. She was also chosen to be the first recipient for Kolej CD Women Personality. – SS (fl)
