masidi ictTUESDAY, 10 SEPTEMBERThe Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Haji Aman today urged the public and private sectors in the state to take the step to apply and increase the use of ICT in their respective organisations.

He said this at the official opening ceremony of the state level ICT Seminar 2013 jointly organised by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), MAMPU Sabah Branch, Computer Services Department Sabah, INTAN Sabah and Malaysian Cocoa Board.

According to him, careful and meticulous planning should be done so that ICT’s needs and usage would contribute towards customer service efficiency besides avoiding wastage in the buying of non-beneficial ICT appliances.

His speech was read by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment cum State Education Exco, Datuk Haji Masidi Manjun.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah said the organising of ICT seminar in UMS showed the support on his part towards the utilisation of ICT for Teaching and Learning, and Professional.

According to him, UMS is very committed towards green computer practise for the usage of the next generation.

vikingdomTUESDAY, 10 SEPTEMBERKRU Studio and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) organised a forum entitled ‘The Art of Vikingdom’ at the Ahmad Nisfu Theatrette, School of Arts , UMS.

It was aimed at sharing knowledge and experience behind the making of the film which was ‘locally made in Malaysia for the global market’, using Malaysian crew.

The panel of presenters included Yusry Abdul Halim (Director), Norman Abdul Halim (Executive Producer), Tommy Mansur (Production Designer) and Sherwin Nunis (Art Director).

The forum also showed the trailer of Vikingdom to give an overview on the aspects of visual effects and Computer Generated Image (CGI) used.

The film engaged foreign actors but the production crew were all locals. Vikingdom will hit the cinemas from 12 September and in the United States of America (USA) on 4 October. - FL

Group photoMONDAY, 09 SEPTEMBER A total of 1,016 students completed the 9th Higher Learning Institutions’ Passing-out Parade and Certificate Presentation of the Police Student Volunteer Corps (SUKSIS) recently.

Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) was represented by 39 students accompanied by six police officers including three parade officers.

The historical event was officiated by the Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Khalid Abu Bakar at the Parade Field of International Islamic University (UIAM), Selangor.

Speaking at the function, he said that youths were the pillars of the nation’s future especially graduates who will be leaders of the nation.

“The same for our line of defence and the safety of our nation which has been established based on the capability and strength of our youths today,” he said.

SUKSIS Corps was established on 4 February 1999 and was the brainchild of former Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. The objective of its establishment was to produce graduates who are familiar with the law, highly disciplined, resilient, and with good personality in line with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) principles. – FL

mlm bakatMONDAY, 09 SEPTEMBERThe Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah urged all new students not to be influenced by propaganda or elements that may caused them to neglect their studies.

He said that the world has many things to offer and that it would be easy for students to lose their focus.

“Don’t be fooled by elements which could endanger the safety of students, harmony, patriotism and tolerance of students,” he said. He was speaking in his address at the New Students Talent Night organised in conjunction with the Orientation Week for the 2013/2014 Academic Session at the Dewan Canselor.

He added that the presentation by students that night were inspired by the element on solidarity towards a peaceful nation leading to a vision of a developed nation.

More than 30 students entertained all who were present with their rendition of songs, acting and dances. - FL

PPIB Bundu TuhanSUNDAY, 08 SEPTEMBER 23 academicians and support staff of the Centre For Knowledge and Language Learning (PPIB) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) were involved in a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme at Kampung Bundu Tuhan, Ranau recently.

The CSR programme led by PPIB Senior Lecturer, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Andreas Totu was for two days involving the local community in Ranau.

Dr. Andreas who represented the Dean of PPIB, Prof. Dr. Vincent Pang also led a dialogue session with village leaders and also a dart competition besides a motivational programme for the students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bundu Tuhan who will be sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) this year.

The delegation also held a gotong-royong in cleaning the surau and handing over of contributions to the Don Bosco Children’s Home.

The programme was officiated by the Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing Sabah, Datuk Dr. Joachim Gunsalam.

The two day CSR programme was also supported by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Dr. Ewon Ebin and the Graduates Association of Bundu Tuhan. - FL
