FRIDAY, 15 APRIL – The Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy (FPEP) will again be organising the Car Boot Sales on 27 April.

According to the programme secretariat, Rostika Petrus Boroh, the 6^th edition of this programme is a charity drive in aid of the Single Mothers Association of Sabah (PITSA).

“At the same time, it is to build entrepreneurial skills among students through sales, held at the car park of FPEP,” she said in a statement.

She said the programme would begin from 9.00 am until 2.00 pm, and would serve a variety of used goods such as clothing, kitchen utensils and jewellery.

“Payment as low as RM15.00 per lot is charged for UMS staff and students whilst RM30.00 for outsiders,” Rostika added.

Themed “Self Achievement, the Basis for Career Choice”, the carnival was participated by more than 20 organisations such as the Forestry Department, Tambunan; Human Resource Development Department, Kota Kinabalu; Giatmara Centre, Keningau; and Community College, Tambunan from the government agencies, and private colleges among others.

Speaking at the carnival, Principal of the school, Haji Mohamad Mohlis b Yusak thanked all agencies who participated in the carnival.

“We hope to have more participation next year, and welcome agencies to join our carnival,” he said.

The one-day carnival received an overwhelming response with visitors coming from Kg. Nambayan and its surrounding area.

The carnival was part of BPK’s activities for this year in helping to promote UMS and its programmes including courses, not only to secondary school students but also to all who were interested to further their studies, in line with the government’s call to have a nation of lifelong learning. – FL

FRIDAY, 15 APRIL – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Centre for External Education  (PLUMS) will hold a series of open briefing starting tomorrow at the Main Lecture Hall 10 & 11, UMS, Kota Kinabalu.

Its director, Associate Professor Dr. Hajah Arsiah Hj. Bahron said the talks were aimed at providing information about the programmes offered by PLUMS; Bachelor ‘s and Master’s Degree (Coursework) this coming September 2016/2017 academic session that is currently opened.

“Besides the briefing in Kota Kinabalu, a series of briefings will also be held at PLUMS Tawau Learning Centre on 30 April, UMS Labuan International Campus (7 May) and UMS Sandakan Campus (14 May),” she said in a statement.

She said, PLUMS invite all interested individuals to attend the special briefings to get further information regarding the programmes they wish to apply.

According to Dr. Arsiah, among some of the information that would be shared were synopsis of programmes, admission requirements, registration methods and financial aid.

“In addition to targeting working adults, PLUMS programmes are also open to Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) holders, as well as Diploma holders who are seeking to further their studies at degree level with lectures conducted off-campus on weekends.

“PLUMS as a centre for offering lifelong education programmes also provide an opportunity for graduates to pursue Master’s Degree (by Coursework) where lectures are conducted in the evenings and weekends,” she added.

THURSDAY, 14 APRIL – The effort to achieve gender equality in our daily life does not only rests on women alone, but is the responsibility of all parties, from small family units to managing a bigger one such as administrating the government.

This effort can be achieved through an early step of understanding or the awareness of gender and gender perspectives in all levels of society.

This was emphasised by the Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Hajah Jainab Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Ahmad Ayid, who stressed that the understanding of the matter was particularly important in making decisions or implement certain policies with regard to the assessment of gender perspective.

“Ordinary people, both men and women, children or adults need to understand that due to the biological and social factors, men and women have obvious differences, as such, each needs and wants are not the same,” she said.

“Thus, when any policy is passed, there should be an understanding on the impact of these policies to the lives of either men or women.

“Only by making the gender issue a a point of reference in the formulation of public policy, then only will we be able to achieve or move a step forward in gender equality issues,” she said.

She said this when officiating at the 2^nd International Conference on Asean Women with the theme ‘Gender Mainstreaming and Public Policy’ held at Promenade Hotel yesterday.

She added that in a family for example, gender equality should be practiced in our everyday life, such as equal opportunity or freedom to all boys and girls to choose their interests or voice their opinions.

“Children must be taught to respect each other since childhood, and when they grow up with such practices, they would be more sensitive to gender issues,” she added.

She also hoped that throughout the conference, problems related to this issue would be discussed more thoroughly.
