FRIDAY, 22 JANUARY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) aims to collect six gold medals at the Higher Education Institutions Sports Championship (SUKIPT) 2016 to be held at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Johor, starting 29 January.

Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah disclosed that UMS will participate in 11 events this year and hoped to create history thus improving the medal tally and improve our position at the championship.

“UMS places all hopes and confidence on you all, compete in a sporting spirit and give your best to uplift the university’s name,” he urged.

His speech was read by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni UMS, Associate Professor Dr. Ismail Ali yesterday at the Meeting Session and handing-over of the contingent flag, at the Gallery, Chancellery Building, UMS.

A total of 50 athletes will head to UTM on 24 January to compete in the Taekwondo Poomsae, Taekwondo Kyorugi, Athletics, Bowling, Badminton, Karate-do, Fencing, Pencak Silat, Petanque, Lawn Bowl and Volleyball (Men).

Besides the handing-over of flag, an oath-taking ceremony was also held and read by the head of contingent, Max Anzie Jetol.

MONDAY, 25 JANUARY - The recently released (Malaysia University English Test) MUET results of saw an overall excellent achievement by the students of Preparatory Centre of Science and Technology (PPST).

According to a statement by PPST today, out of a total of 300 who sat for the test, 270 students (90.3%) achieved Band 3 and above; in which 18 students achieved Band 5 (6%) compared to 8 achievers of 319 students from the previous batch (2.5%) while 108 students achieved Band 4 (36%). 144 students achieved Band 3 (48%) and 29 students achieved Band 2 (9.7%).

On the overall achievement of MUET candidates in Sabah, the achievement of PPST students contributed to 40.9% of Band 5 achievers, 39.1% of Band 4 and 18.3% of Band 3 achievers from a total of 44, 276 and 787 students in Sabah respectively.

The Band 5 achievers are Elsieeli Duasin, Arnold Marshall Molujin, Zachary Zeno Henry, Eric Gabriel Funk, Mohd Helmie Janong, Muhammad Aiman Ismail, Hafiqah Syazwani Hassanudin, Maryam Rosman, Nazleen Diana Ismail, Sophia Yong Chiu Hung, Annabelle Gissong, Haizal Danial Esah, Sarah Nafisa Rosli, Firas Mohamad Azaini, Nurliyanah Atiqah Shah Fenner Khan, Nur Haziqah Erdina Abd Razak, Nur Nabilah Muhammad Mukhtar and Fatin Munirah Mohd.

The statement also mentioned that PPST is committed to not only improving the achievement of MUET but also in the proficiency of English among our students; since the test is currently used as one of the minimum prerequisites for entry into the UMS degree programme. In addition, the language is PPST’s medium of instruction in teaching as it is vital in preparing them for the science programme in their degree study.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sazmal Effendi Arshad, the Director of PPST, also congratulated the students for the excellent results and encouraged them to further improve their English as it is an extremely important tool to achieve excellence in their desired degree programmes.

THURSDAY, 21 JANUARY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently received three awards at the Arts Award Ceremony organised by the Malaysian Universities Cultural Council (MAKUM) 2015.

The awards ceremony was held  at the Terengganu Equestrian Resort, Kuala Terengganu aimed at rewarding students and MAKUM officers who had given their commitment in ensuring that all activities planned for the years 2013-2015 were successfully conducted.

At the ceremony, Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW), Puteri Norain Faradin Nordin received the Bonang Emas Award, whilst UMS Arts and Culture Club received the Gambang Mustika Award.

Another award, Gendang Sari was given to UMS MAKUM officers, Mohd. Khairuddin Ahmad and Alan James.

The award were presented by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Alimuddin Bin Haji Mohd. Dom.

Also present was the MAKUM 2013-2015 cum UniSZA Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni, Professor Dr. Nik Wan Omar. - (fl)

THURSDAY, 21 JANUARY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Alumni Centre yesterday held a meet and greet session, ‘Temu Santai Alumni’ at Café D’Sireh, UMS.

The session was attended by more than 100 alumni who were mostly staff of UMS itself.

Speaking at the opening address, UMS PhD alumni and President of the UMS Alumni Association, Dato’ Dr. Haji Janathan Kandok who is also the Director of Sabah Customs Department said that they would streamline all programmes planned by Alumni Centre for the benefit of its members.

Earlier, Director of Alumni Centre, Mohd. Raffie Hj. Janau, stressed on the importance of support from alumni to realise the Centre’s objectives.

“We have lined-up a full range of activities and will reach out to more alumni across the country including our international alumni,” he said.

The gathering also included a sharing session by alumni who talked on their achievements, at the same time share some suggestions on ways to attract other alumni to give back to their alma mater. - FL

WEDNESDAY, 20 JANUARY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) this morning held a New Refunding Formula and Key Performance Indicator 2016 Talk to its campus community.

Held at Dewan Canselor (Chancellor Hall ) UMS, the talk was presented by the Director of the Centre for Strategik and Academic Management (PPSA), UMS, Professor Dr. Marcus Jopony.

The talk was aimed at sharing information regarding the reduction on operating expenditure (OPEX) for 2016 and the new refunding formula, two important aspects for Public Universities (UA) starting this year.

The briefing was in line with the need to share the current status and future scenario related to budget allocation of the university as a preparation for UMS staff to meet the challenges and responsibilities that lie ahead starting this year.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah in his keynote address said despite facing financial contraints, UMS would remain committed to its obligation as a respected higher education provider and ensure the success of the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) set by the Ministry of Higher Education.

“Therefore, I urge all members of UMS to take the change and change, both in terms of mindset, attitude, habit and work practice.

“Let’s join hands and work towards UMS’ financial sustainability, productivity and excellence,” he said. – MA (fl)
