FRIDAY, 22 MAY – Deputy President of the Student Representatives Council (MPP) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Nurlina Arappe was awarded the Young Woman Welfare Volunteer Award 2014 for the 22-40 year old Category.

The award was presented by the Head of State, Tun Juhar Haji Mahiruddin in a ceremony held in Kota Kinabalu, recently.

Nurlina when met said that she was happy and grateful for the award which she described to be very meaningful for her.

“I never thought that I would be chosen to be the recipient of this award, especially seeing many others who were also active in the field of volunteerism.

“I am grateful and will consider this recognition as a moral booster to continue to be active in charitable activities,” she said who originates from Tawau.

Nurlina, 23 also hopes to be a successful career woman and a leader in future. – SS (fl)

THURSDAY, 21 MAY – The Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in collaboration with the Research and Education for Peace (REPUSM) Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and the Peace building Club recently organised a Public University Conflict Management Workshop.

The five-day workshop was attended by 148 public university students; 26 (USM), 2 (UUM) whereas the remaining 90 were UMS students under the International Relations programme under the tutelage of Professor Dr. Kamarulzaman Askandar, who then exhibited their projects and presentations as part of the workshop activity.

This workshop was aimed at training the university students in conflict management skills. Through this, there can be an increased awareness among young people on the need to resolve conflicts at an early stage by using the appropriate techniques and prevention approaches.

The students also learned how to apply the ideas of peace and peace building, conflict mapping, conflict resolution which was demonstrated in studying the case of the ongoing peace process in Mindanao, the situation of the Rohingya communities in Malaysia and other relevant cases in the Southeast Asian region.

The opening ceremony was officiated by the Dean of FKSW, Professor Dato’ Mohd. Hamdan Hj. Adnan and was also attended by Professor Dr. Kamarulzaman Askandar, who was the Organising Chairman of this event. – SS (fl)

THURSDAY, 21 MAY – About 200 staff and students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) attended a talk on SSKM and IS Militants Threats held at the YTL Auditorium this morning.

The lecture organised by the Student Affairs Department (HELP) was presented by a police officer of the Malaysian Royal Police Kota Kinabalu, Inspector Mohd. Shahrizan Yahaya.

In his talk, he described the background and objectives of the IS militants which had diverted from the true teachings of Islam.

He also stressed that the young generation especially university students should not fall into the trap of the militant ideology that was reported to be have been trying to enter this country.

Shahrizan also disclosed that a total of 61 Malaysians were found to be fighting as IS militants where some were killed.

Touching on SSKM, the police officer who hails from Perak explained that the organisation, which has its base on the social networking sites were akin to separatists who instigated the people of Sabah and Sarawak to secede Malaysia.

Hence, he said, it was an offence to be involved in SSKM as one could be convicted under the Sedition Act 1948.

THURSDAY, 21 MAY – The Borneo International Visual and Performing Arts Exhibition (NEOARTEX) Carnival 2015 organised by the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) gained international acclaim with the involvement of participants from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Thailand.

According to the Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Kamarlin Ombi, NEOARTEX 2015 was seen to be able to uplift UMS students artwork as a world-class product.

“My desire was for NEOARTEX programme to be an annual event that would be included in the annual calendar of activities in Sabah as a prelude to a large-scale festival like KK Arts Festival,” he added while officiating at the carnival last night at Dewan Resital (Recital Hall) UMS.

He added that by organising NEOARTEX, it can expand the collaboration on creative ideas of UMS students with other countries making UMS a cultural conference icon at Asia and international level.

Earlier, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Mohd. Harun Abdullah in his speech hoped NEOARTEX could convert the Arts Block of the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage UMS as a tourism hub and ethnic arts centre in Sabah.

“I believe that through this carnival, we can get more ideas and understanding of the culture and arts of the communities in the island of Borneo,” he explained.

His speech was presented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni, Associate Professor Dr. Ismail Ali.

Also present at the ceremony were Chairman of the Suria Charitable Foundation, Datuk Raya Erom and Chief Librarian, Dg Rukiah Ag Amit. – ZMD (fl)
