
The purpose of the workshop was to generate awareness on the Biosafety Act 2007 and its implications for research involving genetically modified organism.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Head of UMS Institutional Biosafety Committee, Professor Dr. Clemente Michael Wong Vui Ling highlighted on the importance of Federal Laws pertaining to biosafety, enshrined within the Biosafety Act.
“There is a need to generate awareness and educate researchers on the procedures that need to be adhered to, to ensure compliance to the rules and regulations,” he said.
The speakers who were invited to present their talks in this two-day workshop were Dr. Anita Anthonysamy, Dr. Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir, Dr. Christopher Voo Lok Yung, Dr. Rahizan Issa and Muhammad Farhan Roslan.
A total of 50 participants attended the workshop on the first day and 25 on the second day; made up of students, lecturers and members of the Institutional Biosafety committee.
This was the first in a series of workshops organised by IPB. – FL
