WEDNESDAY, 23 APRIL – Entrepreneurship activity is an economic contributor in the development of the community especially among younger generation.

Realising this, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through the Basic Entrepreneurship Culture (APK) will host the 10^th APK Expo starting next Monday.

Located at UMS Library, the Expo will open from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm until 6 May 2014.

With the theme, “Live Simply, Dream Big", a total of 170 booths will be opened with Session 1 and 2 each having 56 stalls, whilst session 3 with 58 stalls.

Among the items traded included food, drinks, games and a variety of creative stuff that will be the main attraction for customers throughout the expo.

The Expo which is open only on weekdays also aims to give business exposure to the undergrads as well as training them to become successful entrepreneurs in future.

UMS staff and students and the public are invited to visit the APK Expo which promises various special deals. – SS (fl)

TUESDAY, 22 APRIL – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) today participated in the ‘Let’s Read Together for 10 Minutes’ (LRT) Programme which was simultaneously held across Malaysia this morning.

Inspired by the State Public Libraries Malaysia, the LRT programme was part of the reading campaign held every year as on-going efforts in shaping the community towards adopting the culture of reading.

Interesting, the programme involved people from all walks of life, to pause and read for 10 minutes simultaneously, starting at 10.00 am.

AT UMS level, the LRT was held at the university’s Library.

School of Education and Social Development (SPPS), Wang Yu Ping saw the programme as a noble effort to remind undergrads to use their time wisely by reading.

“Although only 10 minutes, if the time is used wisely, certainly a lot of information and knowledge can be obtained,” said this student who hailed from the People’s Republic of China.

Ping, was with several other friends when met by Chancellery Media and of the opinion that the programme should be continued such as Earth Hour which is celebrated in March every year.

For the record, LRT is a first step towards branding of the reading initiative and making the library as an organisation which is relevant in education after school hours. – ZMD (fl)

TUESDAY, 22 APRIL – The Cycling Championship, ‘Le Tour de CD’ organised by Residential College CD (Kolej CD) recently received good response when they attracted 127 participants from among UMS community and the public from in and around Kota Kinabalu.

The championship was divided into two categories; Road Bike and Mountain Bike Categories which attracted 72 and 55 participants respectively.

Participants were provided with helmets and escorted by motorcycle patrol from UMS Security Division as a safety measure.

The participants started off the challenge from the compound of Kolej CD before cycling 10km around the hilly campus area.

 The championship, which required physical and mental endurance saw Niklos Minol won the Mountain Bike Category followed by Johnie Ngongoloy at second place and Rahim Sidik third.

The Road Bike Category was won by Choi Kha Hoo. The second and third place winners were won by M. Sharizan Rahimi and Aiean Sofizan Ahmad respectively.

The flag-off and prize presentation was performed by the Director of the Haj Fund Boad Sabah, Datin Nurlaila Said. Also present to present prizes was the representative of Atiqah Enterprise, the main sponsor of the championship, Muhammad Zuhri Alimin.

Meanwhile, Choi Kha Hoo said he was satisfied with his performance in the challenge.

“The championship will be a useful experience to prepare myself for bigger competitions such as Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) in future,” he said.

He also hoped that the staging of the championship where cycling had been popular nowadays as a community recreational sports would be continued to produce a healthy community. – MA & SS

TUESDAY, 22 APRIL – The School of Education and Social Development (SPPS) contingent dominated the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Inter-Schools Athletics Championship held recently.

SPPS represented by 45 athletes collected 22 gold, seven silver and three bronze nudging 12 other UMS schools at the championship which entered its 15^th edition.

The championship also saw SPPS athletes Eldy Sham Elron and Merrey Gabali crowned the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year of the championship which was held at UMS Sports Complex.

Eldy won four gold medals in the 100m and 200m sprint, 400 metres hurdles and led his team in capturing gold in the 4 x 100m relay event.

Meanwhile, Merry won gold in the triple jump, 100m sprint and 4 x 100m relay.

With their medal haul of five gold, two silver and two bronze, second place went to the contingent from the School of Psychology and Social Work (SPKS), while the Labuan School of International Business and Finance took the third spot with two gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze.

The prize-giving to the winners were presented by the Director of UMS Sports Centre, Mohd. Asyraaf Fong Abdullah. – SS (fl)
