TUESDAY, 22 SEPTEMBER – A total of 274 students from 21 secondary schools around Kota Kinabalu will be camping for three days at the Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (FSSA) premises in conjunction with the UMS Prime Math Camp 2014 recently.The programme organised by FSSA also received support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports Sabah (KBSS), Kota Kinabalu District Education Office, and the Youth and Sports Department of Sabah besides support from the Sabah Youth Council and Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) Sabah.
The closing ceremony of the camp was officiated by FSSA Dean, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Baba Musta who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah.
In his speech, he explained that the math camp held on UMS campus ground was to provide opportunities to students to enjoy campus atmosphere thus giving encouragement and motivation for them to set foot into the ivory tower one day.
“Hopefully, the participants would be able to obtain beneficial experience and be able to instill interest in mathematics and to shape their minds to think critically,” he said.
He also gave away prizes to the best male participant, Mohammad Hibri Syakiran from Sekolah Menengah (SM) Sains Sabah and Mary Valentina Christopher from SM St. Francis Convent for best female participant.
Also present was Deputy Permanent Secretary of KBSS Haji Awang Damit Haji Ag Anak and Chairman of the Prime Mathematics Camp UMS 2014, Dr. Abdullah Bade. – SS (fl)
