Centre of Instrumentation and Science Services started off as Section of Instrumentation under the Centre of Research and Innovation. In 2016, the Section was upgraded into a centre. The new status has brought in additional responsibilities.
Presently, the Centre continues the tasks previously undertaken by the Instrumentation Section. These tasks include managing and coordinating preventive and corrective maintenance work on selective instruments in faculties, research centres and units; offering analytical services using high-end instruments; facilitating the accreditation process of laboratories; and coordinating the planning and procurement of instruments for research and teaching purposes.
Now, the Centre is also responsible in enhancing the competency of staff under the science scheme by planning and conducting technical training for them and managing the integrated laboratory. Since 2017 the Centre has had its very own building that houses the integrated laboratory (Makmal Bersepadu).
High- end instruments, which regularly undergo maintenance are placed in this laboratory. Having these instruments in a centralised laboratory would efficiently benefit researchers and students as they can get all analyses and testing done under one roof, a cost-effective and time-saving privilege.
This will definitely strengthen research activities. To make UMS relevant to the people of Sabah, services in the integrated laboratory are also offered to government and private agencies as well as individuals outside UMS.
Information on the Centre and its technical services available in the integrated laboratory itself are provided in this website. I highly hope that people from all walks of life would benefit from this website and we in the Centre we will continuously thrive to improve it.
