He said the friendly game was quite unique with its contingents coming from Borneo island itself, and this opportunity should be used to foster friendship through the sports contested.

“We have contingents from Sarawak, Brunei, Federal Territory of Labuan, and Kalimantan, Indonesia that will converge here to participate in this game.

“My hope is that every athlete does not only compete to collect medals, but use this opportunity to interact and share experiences with athletes from other countries,” he urged.

He was speaking at the handing over of UMS flag to the contingent.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ismail also urged that sports and recreational activities be continued on other days at the respective departments  and not only confined to having them in tournaments, so as to practice the culture of healthy lifestyle.

At the forthcoming 4^th Friendly Games, UMS contingent is sending 180 athletes to participate in 13 sports disciplines contested. – MA (fl)

MONDAY, 18 APRIL – Three Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students recently joined the Student Volunteer Mission under the ASEAN Student Volunteer Foundation (YSS), at Campasak, Laos.

Amin Daud, Agricultural Science programme student,  Lim Way Yang (Health Sciences) and Nor Azirah Abdullah (International Relations) were in Laos for two weeks to take part in the mission, which was organised by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia.

Besides representatives  from UMS, the programme was also participated by 45 other volunteers from various higher learning institutions comprising public and private universities, Community Colleges, Teacher Training Institutes (IPG) and Polytechnics.

The volunteers performed voluntary work through the ‘Community Engagement’ programme involving three villages namely Phonethong, Ban Donetalath and Ban Soukhouma, in the two-week mission.

Various activities were held during the programme, among them were ‘Walk with Love’, a contribution of 100 sandals to schools involved, building of huts for motorcycle parking, making compost, building of pedestrian walkway and painting of school walls. – (fl)

MONDAY, 18 APRIL – A total of 14 students of the Residential College E, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently organised a study trip to Brunei Darussalam.

Deputy Principal of the college, who is also the coordinator of the programme, Mohd Hilmey Saili said, the programme was a way to foster good relations between UMS and Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA).

“The programme themed, ‘Study Tour to Brunei’ was also an exposure to the delegation on the management and improvement on residential college management at the two universities visited, which was also to get to know more closely the culture of the Brunei community,” he said when contacted by the media.

According to him, the delegation from UMS was warmly received by UBD and UNISSA, and had a discussion on the management procedures of their respective residential colleges.

Hilmey said, members of the delegation also visited several interesting places around Brunei.

“Besides visiting the two universities, we also visited the Malay Technology Museum, Maritime Museum, Masjid Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, and the Cultural Gallery including the Water Village Tourism,” he said.

The five-day programme was organised by the Student Welfare Committee (JAKMAS) Residential College E 2015/2016 Academic Session. – SS (fl)

FRIDAY, 15 APRIL – The Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy (FPEP) will again be organising the Car Boot Sales on 27 April.

According to the programme secretariat, Rostika Petrus Boroh, the 6^th edition of this programme is a charity drive in aid of the Single Mothers Association of Sabah (PITSA).

“At the same time, it is to build entrepreneurial skills among students through sales, held at the car park of FPEP,” she said in a statement.

She said the programme would begin from 9.00 am until 2.00 pm, and would serve a variety of used goods such as clothing, kitchen utensils and jewellery.

“Payment as low as RM15.00 per lot is charged for UMS staff and students whilst RM30.00 for outsiders,” Rostika added.
