MSM Thumbs UpTUESDAY, 02 SEPTEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) became the first choice for applicants of Degree Programmes in Public Higher Learning Institutions (IPTA) when it recorded the highest number of enrollments for the 2014/2015 Academic Session.

According to a report in a national newspaper today, UMS was in first position with a total enrolment of 4,851 students recorded on the last day of registration, which was held simultaneously across the country yesterday.

Based on this total, 69.6 percent of UMS new students were female while 30.4 percent male.

The total included 1,992 students from Sabah, 2,295 (Peninsular Malaysia), 399 (Sarawak) and the rest were international students.

UMS also received admissions from the Disabled (OKU), in total six were physically handicapped and partially blind.

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) followed in second place with a total enrollment of 4,659 and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) with 4,154 students. – ZMD (fl)

msm2013 350x233MONDAY, 01 SEPTEMBER – A total of 4,851 students will be studying at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) for the 2014/2015 New Intake Session.

The total includes 1,992 students from Sabah, 2,295 (Peninsular Malaysia), 399 (Sarawak) and 165 (international students). Today, the students check in at each of the residential college of UMS starting at 8.00 am.

Also registering today are those offered under the household income mode lower than 40%.

All students will undergo a weeklong Orientation (Minggu Suai Mesra [MSM]) to prepare themselves for campus life.

Among the activities for the MSM included the University Introduction, Oath-taking, University Briefing, Recreation Programme and Talent-time as the highlight.

Also expected to be present are UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali and all Principal and Senior Officers of the University. – SS (fl)

UMS ADABIFRIDAY, 29 AUGUST – The collaboration signed between Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and Adabi Consumer Industries Sdn. Bhd on 14 December 2012, is now bearing fruit when new products were launched at the Seminar Room, Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP), UMS this morning.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah, UMS and Adabi worked together in terms of learning, research and consultancy in the field of food industry for two years to develop and commericalise new products.

“I believe, this UMS and Adabi collaboration is not only beneficial to both sides, but also have an impact on the community, particularly through the process or transfer of knowledge programme, technology and the development of quality human capital,” he said when launching the product.

Datuk Harun added that FSMP students should be proud and grateful to be able to cooperate with foreign companies like Adabi in producing new food products.

“The collaboration with food industry brings benefit to the students as they are able to apply all knowledge learned in the classroom such as the generation of new ideas, the use of technology in food processing, marketing and financial management of the company,” he said.

The sauce contained two variants namely Kuah Kacang Bersama Ayam and Kuah Kacang Bersama Daging, marketed in June nationwide with the market price of RM5.50 per can.

pelekat jalur gemilangFRIDAY, 29 AUGUST – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through its Corporate Relations Division (BPK) today began distributing more than 2000 pieces of stickers to all its campus community in conjunction with the month-long Independence day celebration.

The distribution is led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni (HEPA), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali at the main entrance of the University.

According to the Head of BPK UMS, Azmi Jumat, sticker distribution is one of the university’s efforts to encourage the campus community to appreciate the meaning behind the independence.

“In addition to flying the Jalur Gemilang around the campus, distribution of stickers is an effort by the university to raise the spirit of partriotism among the campus community,” he said.

He added that the stickers also carried the theme of this year’s Independence Month ‘Di Sini Lahirnya Sebuah Cinta’, which was also one of the lines of the late Sudirman’s song entitled ‘Warisan’. – ZMD (fl)

MoU UMS JaistFRIDAY, 29 AUGUST – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST).

UMS was represented by its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah who signed the agreement at a ceremony held at the Executive Board Room, Chancellery Building.

On behalf of JAIST, its previous agreement was signed by its President, Dr. Tetsuo Asano in Japan.

Advisor to the President of JAIST, Prof. Dr. Shungo Kawamishi was present representing the President of JAIST at the UMS-JAIST MoU and welcomed the upcoming cooperation that would benefit both institutions of higher learning in academia and research.

He also expressed hope that the impact of this collaboration between UMS and JAIST could find solutions to various problems related to science and technology.

Through the signed agreement, UMS and JAIST would be collaborating on the exchange of students and staff from various faculties, collaboration in research projects, exchange of data, information and academic publications, and organising of joint workshops or conferences involving areas of interest of both universities. – MA (fl)
