FRIDAY, 19 AUGUST – The Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language (PPIB), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) continues to impart fundamental language skills to students of UMS, in line with Shift 1 of the Malaysia Education Blueprint (Higher Education) - to have ‘Holistic Entrepreneurial and Balanced Graduates’ that encompassed English and Communication Skills, Curriculum Design, and Employability.

PPIB, through its English for Occupational Purposes (EOP) course under the English Language Cluster conducted a Language Use in the Profession workshop for its second year students undertaking this compulsory subject, as part of the syllabus.

More than 150 students obtained invaluable  experience at the two-hour workshop that not only highlighted on language use as professionals but also touched on the importance of top-to-toe image and appearance including tips on choosing the right attitude and attire befitting job interviews and the working environment.

“The workshop is very beneficial and useful where it focuses on dress code and more that add value to our knowledge.

“The session also included the do’s and don’t’s during interview for us to be better prepared and be more confident”, said Muhammad Firdaus Syarifuddin, a second year student taking Bachelor of Economics (Hons.) (Planning and Development Economics) under the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy, UMS.

PPIB strives to provide relevant English language courses to undergraduates at UMS. The EOP course was specifically designed with the aim of equipping students to meet the English language needs and demands at the workplace.  Students also undergo simulated job interviews as part of the curriculum, in addition to conducting simulated meetings, negotiations, and presentations in English.

TUESDAY, 16 AUGUST – The 10th International Malaysian Studies Conference (MSC 10) is being held at Dewan Resital, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) from August 15 to 17. The theme for this conference is “Globalisation and Regionalism: Malaysia in ASEAN Community Building.” This is the first time that UMS is hosting the MSC together with Persatuan Sains Sosial Malaysia (PSSM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
 
The opening ceremony was graced by the Sabah State Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs, YB Datuk Hajah Jainab Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Ahmad Ayid. Datuk Hajah Jainab emphasized in her speech the need for input from the academic community on government policy work. She also enumerated some of her advocacy which include the discussion of ASEAN as a regional organization that will ensure the interests of all its peoples. Another area of personal interest for Datuk Jainab is the continuous work of mainstreaming gender issues within Sabah and throughout Malaysia’s own development goals. She proudly announced that the State has already earmarked August 27 as Malaysian Women’s Day in Sabah and has invited all the participants to join in this commemoration.
 
This event was also attended by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Dr. Shahril Yusof. The President of the Malaysian Social Sciences Association (PSSM) and  IKMAS Director, UKM,  Professor Dr. Rashila Ramli and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rosazman Hussin, representing the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Humanities, UMS, as co-organizers, welcomed all the participants to the MSC 10 and to Universiti Malaysia Sabah.

TUESDAY, 16 AUGUST – A total of 16 students from the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently joined the 7th International Ceramic Exhibition Festival SELSIUS 2016.

According to the Head of Visual Arts Technology Programme UMS, Norhayati Ayob, the exhibition held at Galeri Reka, National Visual Arts Gallery, Kuala Lumpur was participated by year one, two and three as well as Master’s students of Visual Art Technology.

“The exhibition also involves the participation from 11 countries namely, South Korea, Turkey, China, India, Thailand, United States of America, Switzerland, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia and host country, Malaysia.

“This provides a new experience for the Visual Art Technology students to explore ceramic art from foreign countries,” she said.

Meanwhile, a lecturer of the Visual Art Technology Programme, Associate Professor Dr. Baharuddin Mohd Arus said, the exhibition provided an off-campus learning experience through a live demonstration by local and international artists.

Earlier, the exhibition Curator, Dr. Shamsu Muhamad explained that the word ‘Selsius’ was a metaphor for ‘spirit and dreams’, that contemporary ceramic art would flourish in the international arena.

“The word ‘Selsius’ itself means the temperature used in firing ceramics practiced by artisans, designers, craft entrepreneurs and industry technologists.

“Thus, Selsius Exhibition is a platform and channel to ceramic enthusiasts old and new to express their creative ideas sinergising them with cutting-edge technology,” he added.

Various support programmes will be held at the National Visual Arts Gallery, among them are talks, Demonstrations and Ceramic Workshop and its sale.

The exhibition is open to the public from 2 August until 30 September 2016. – (fl)

MONDAY, 15 AUGUST - The Housewives and Women Staff Club Universiti Malaysia Sabah (KESUMBA) will be organising a seminar on personal financial management, “Planning Your Finance” on 17 August 2016 (Wednesday) at 2.00 pm.  The venue is at the Gallery, Chancellery Building, UMS.

The seminar among others intends to help UMS employees in planning their personal finance based on income, debt management and how to speed up your debt repayment, setting short term, medium and long term financial goals, and how to do simple individual calculations.

The seminar will be conducted by the Chief Executive Officer of Prof. Muhaya Eye & Lasik Centre, Mr. Muhammad Addaem Mikhail Chandran who is the son-in-law of Professor of Opthalmology  and a well-known inspirer, Prof. Dr. Muhaya Mohamad.

Members of KESUMBA are invited to attend this seminar.  Admission is free.  Meanwhile, a fee of RM30.00 is charged to non-members.
