poster kaamatan 1THURSDAY, 14 MAY – The Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language (PPIB), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will be organising their Kaamatan Carnival 2015 starting from 25-28 May 2015 in conjunction with the Kaamatan Festival which is celebrated in the month of May.

According to a statement issued by PPIB, many interesting activities have been lined up throughout this four-day event which includes PPIB Sugandoi Kaamatan (singing competition), karaoke, traditional handicraft exhibition, traditional cooking demonstration, sessions with local artistes and many more.

Visitors would have the chance to meet with local artistes namely Rey, Rhowel Rolland Pagi, Fabian William, Lydia Kalidin and cartoonist Langkawit.

For those who would like to participate in the PPIB Sugandoi Kaamatan (singing competition), their choice of songs must be in the local dialects. Please obtain the registration form from Patesia Philip by calling her at 019-8124358.

As for those who would like to set up booths and participate in the selling of products, tents are available and are on loan at a minimal fee.

JobsYou 1THURSDAY, 14 MAY – A forum entitled ‘Jobs and You’ jointly organised by the Ministry of Industrial Development Sabah and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through the Faculty of Engineering will be held this Saturday, 16 May 2015 at UMS Resital Hall, starting at 9.00 am.

According to a statement issued by the organiser, the objective of this forum is to instill awareness amongst students on the competition and job needs of the industrial sector in Sabah.

The statement also added that the forum acts as a platform for all industry players on the criteria and requirements of job seekers. It also promotes understanding between employers and employees pertaining to the related industry and job opportunities.

The forum is expected to be officiated by the Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Industrial Development Sabah, Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah. Also expected to be present is the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah.

Selamat Pagi CikguWEDNESDAY, 13 MAY – A telemovie entitled ‘Selamat Pagi Cikgu’ (Good Morning Teacher) produced by North Borneo Media Sdn Bhd in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will be screened on 16 May 2015 by RTM through TVi at 12.00 noon, in conjunction with Teachers’ Day.

‘Selamat Pagi Cikgu’ directed by Azeli Mohamad was a result of a collaboration achieved through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between a local production house, North Borneo Media Sdn Bhd and UMS.

According to a statement issued by the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) more than 90 percent of the production team and cast were made up of staff and students of UMS from the Creative Arts and Visual Arts programme in FKSW.

The telemovie was about a graduate who became a teacher out of his own will because he was unable to get any job offers and was sent to teach at a rural area in Sabah.

But after teaching for a few months, he was drawn to the life at the village and its community and was determined to become an excellent teacher. - (fl)

MASUM15WEDNESDAY, 13 MAY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) athletes are undergoing intensive training in preparation for the Malaysian University Sports Council Championship (MASUM) 2015 held at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in July.

According to UMS Youth and Sports Officer, Charles Thomas, he said among the potential medal haul were in taekwondo, karate, lawn bowl, pentaque, silat and swimming.

“To achieve the goals and targets for the tournament in MASUM championship this time, all athletes have been undergoing intensive training individually or with their team,” he said.

For karate athletes, Mathavan a/l Vickneswaran, he intended to make up for his defeat at the semi final in the men’s Kumite category under 75 kg at the same tournament last year.

Mathavan had previously won gold at the MASUM championship 2013 and Higher Education Institutions (SUKIPT) 2014 which was held at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA).

All of the athletes who will compete in the 2015 MASUM are determined to improve their performances and bringing home medals for the university. – ZMD (fl)

KTMTUESDAY, 12 MAY – A total of 500 students participated in the ‘High Value Health’ programme organised by the Student Welfare Committee (JAKMAS) Tun Mustapha Residential College Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through the Executive Council (Exco) for Culture and Arts, recently.

According to the director of the programme, Risimaran Subramaniyam; the event, held for the first time was to ensure that students from the Tun Mustapha Residential College maintain a high level of health besides doing charity through blood donation.

“We were targeting only about 80 students, but we have a total of 200 students who donated and this is a very encouraging number,” he told UMS Media.

In the meantime, the Tun Mustapha college principal, Dr. Mohamad Nizam Nazarudin said, the success of this blood donation campaign proved that the students fully supported the effort in improving the health of those in the campus.

“Programme like this should be continued in future as the result benefits not only the campus community but also the public,” he said, and who also donated blood and underwent health checks.

The programme managed to collect about 100 bags of blood donated, and were sent to the Kudat Hospital Blood Bank. – ZMD (fl)
