konsul china lawat kalTUESDAY, 3 MARCH – Consul-General of China in Kota Kinabalu, Chen Peijie visited Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Labuan International Campus (KAL) recently.

She was accompanied by the President of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce Labuan (LCCC), Datuk Wong Kii Yii held a discussion and briefing with UMSKAL Deputy Director, Associate Professor Dr. Geoffrey Harvey Tanakinjal at his office at Level 13, Tower Building.

Geoffrey represented UMSKAL Director, Associate Professor Dr Murnizam Haji Halik, briefed them on the infrastructure and facilities as well as the teaching and learning environment in UMS Labuan.

Chen Piejie who first visited Labuan also held meetings and dialogues with about 121 Chinese students studying at UMS.

He advsied the students to adhere to the university rules and laws of the country for their own security.

Also present were the Chairman of Academic Division, Mohd Asly Buncho and Student Affairs Officer, Mohd Fadzli Sarudi, lecturer of International Finance Labuan and theComputing and Informatics including members of LCCC. – SS (fl)

maulidurrasul ums2015MONDAY, 2 MARCH – Good values in Islam should be made the foundation in creating unity and harmony among the community through the support of all parties, regardless of race and religion.

Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr.  Mohd Harun Abdullah said, in terms of preserving religious harmony, Muslims and non-Muslims should play a role in solving any problems related to claims, rationally and reasonably.

“Emotional attitude and selfishness need to be restricted using logic and rationalism centred on justice.  Even when confronted with conflict, negotiation is the best solution.

“Choosing confrontation and acting beyond limit of humanity such as terrorism does not reflect the teachings of Islam itself, and should be avoided to ensure the integrity of a society and nation,” he said.

He said this when officiating the Maulidur Rasul 1436H/2015M, UMS level at the Main Lecture Hall Complex 2.

Touching on the Maulidur Rasul celebration, he urged all UMS staff and students to adopt the birth of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W as a role model and and good example of best practice in everyday life.

Datuk Harun added , the term  Al-Amin by the Quraysh to the Prophet reflected his majesty’s noble qualities such siddiq, tabliq and fatanah in providing excellent service to the community.

Themed ‘Perpaduan Nadi Transformasi Negara’, the event was filled with various programmes such as video presentations of charity projects done by UMS and a Qasidah presentation by the Al-Hafidz Islamic Primary School, Tuaran besides a talk on Maulidur Rasul by the guest speaker, Ustaz Das’ad Latif. – MA (fl)

ustaz dasadMONDAY, 2 MARCH – The Main Lecture Hall 2 was flooded with the attendance of nearly 4,000 people to listen to talks in conjunction with Maulidur Rasul 1436H/2015M, Universiti Malasyia Sabah (UMS) level, recently.

UMS media survey found that besides staff and students of UMS, the talk presented by a guest speaker from Universiti Hasanuddin Makasar, Indonesia, Ustaz Das’ad Latif was also attended by public from various districts in Sabah.

One of those who attended, Muqqarabin Ramly Sham said he and his family came to UMS merely to listen to the talk by Ustaz Das’ad.

“My family and I came here specially to witness for ourselves this renown speaker.  Thanks to UMS for inviting the public to attend as well,” said Muqqarabin, who hailed from Sandakan.

Meanwhile, homemaker, Jamilah Said when interviewed also expressed her gratitude and hoped that many more such programmes would be organised by UMS in future.

“UMS  is thoughful, not only we had the opportunity to listen to the talk but also visit interesting  places around UMS.  I hope such talks will be organised again in future,” said Jamilah who was present with her five children.

In addition to the talk, Ustaz Das’ad enlightened all the meaning and purpose of Maulidur Rasul.

He said such celebration could increase the love for Rasulullah SAW besides appreciating the prophet’s sunnah in keeping faith to Allah and to preserve the belief in fighting for Islam and its syariat. – SM (fl)

Bookwriting1MONDAY, 2 MARCH – The BIMP-EAGA Unit for Tourism Development, Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will be organising a ‘Book Writing Workshop’ this Wednesday, 4 March 2015.

This workshop is part of the BE-UTD Workshop Series.

According to a statement issued by the organiser, the workshop is limited to 30 persons and will start from 9.00 am until 12.00 pm.

The speakers of the workshop are Director of UMS Publisher (Unit Penerbitan UMS), Associate Professor Dr. Asmady Idris and Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy, Associate Professor Dr. Rasid Mail.

Staff of UMS are encouraged to join as MyCPD points will be given.

praktik hijau kalMONDAY, 2 MARCH – The Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA) wanted the people to practice a green lifestyle while still at the ivory tower.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili said in this connection, all Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Labuan International Campus (KAL) residents can take part by practicing green lifestyle towards the success of the National Green Technology Policy.

He said various approaches can easily be practiced in everyday life including austerity measures in the use of electricity and water at dorms and academic buildings by switching off lights and fans when not in use, and making sure the tap is closed tightly to avoid wastage of water and so on.

In addition, the practice of recycling method; Reduce, Reuse and Recycle were some small steps yet effective that could be practiced every day.

“UMS staff and students are encouraged to make use of biodegradable food containers at the college cafeterias,” he urged.

Maximus who is also Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Malaysian Green Foundation said this at the opening of the Green Youth programme organised by the Malaysian Green Foundation at the Main Lecture Hall 1, Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL).
