Jakmas Tun MustaphaMONDAY, 20 APRIL – A total of 70 undergrads of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) had recently joined the True Leadership Camp programme organised by the Exco of Academic and Career Student Welfare Committee (JAKMAS) of Residential College Tun Mustapha in collaboration with the Sabah Youth Council.

Deputy Principal of the College, Herman Sallah said, the programme was held for three days and two nights at Kampung Tambatuon, Kota Belud and aimed at educating undergrads into caring and appreciating their environment in addition to strengthening the their leadership quality.

“Undergrads today need to be absorbed with leadership quality through outdoor activities besides attending lectures because knowledge on nature may not be available in a student learning and teaching session,” he said when closing the programme.

He described a person who was able to self lead would also be able to lead others and their family, and added that such camps would produce undergrads who can be leaders and agents to other undergrads to build their character and high self-esteem.

For Mohd Szami Solehin Jasni, 21, the camp had a positive impact on him through the activities organised such as jungle trekking and Group Training (LDK).

“This camp also exposes undergrads to village atmosphere besides fostering a sense of care for the environment by organising it in a virgin forest,” he added.

Part of the activities of the camp were jungle trekking, aerobics and talentime. – ZMD (fl)

jejak ilmuMONDAY, 20 APRIL – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP) in collaboration with UMS Library and the Malaysian Librarians Association (PPM) Sabah Chapter organised 'Jejak Ilmu' for five days in Indonesia, starting Saturday till Thursday.

According to the Dean of FPP, Professor Dr. Ismail Ibrahim, the programme among others was to foster academic cooperation with several universities in Indonesia which had a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with FPP, among them Universiti Muhammadiyah Jakarta (UMJ), Universitas Mercu Buana (UMBY) and Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD).

“This programme provides an opportunity for UMS to foster smart collaboration with these universities from the aspect of knowledge-sharing documentation, skills, technology and reference materials collection,” he said.

He said this in his speech read by FPP Deputy Dean, Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Dahlan Hj Malek in conjunction with the launching of the programme themed ‘Silatulrahim Akademik Menyongsong Komuniti ASEAN 2015’ at FPP Seminar Room, recently.

Prof. Ismail said the programme would indirectly allow participants to track and to get closer to the latest technology used in university academic besides learning about the culture of the local community in terms of infrastructure development, economy, culture, customs and language.

He added that the programme was a three-in-one event because at the same time the faculty management held discussions with the relevant universities visited regarding student mobility programme and cooperation that involved knowledge, besides research seminar and presentation of research papers by participants.

“This programme involved a total of 25 participants consisting of first year postgraduate students of the Counselling Psychology Programme, FPP lecturers and representatives from UMS Library and PPM,” he said. - MA (fl)

jpp himpun bulananMONDAY, 20 APRIL – Director of the Development and Maintenance Department (JPP), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Kamisah Husin reminded all staff of JPP to work with full commitment and responsibility for the department and the university in executing their duties, with the hope that Allah SWT will give him blessings in the after life.

She said, the present staff should take the initiative to assist their department to edify it for someday they would inherit the reins of JPP’s leadership.

She said this at the 3rd JPP UMS monthly meeting 2015 which was held at the Department of Information and Communication Technology UMS, recently.

At the event, a retiring JPP staff, Janggil Matayu was feted with the presentation of certificate which was presented by JPP Electrical Engineer, Jorin Matawas.

A briefing was presented by Senior Chief Architect of JPP, Azlina Abd Hamid besides the presentation of certificate of appreciation to two students who were doing their internship at that department. - (fl)

SPRUMS 1FRIDAY, 17 APRIL – The Anti-Corruption Secretariat of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (SPRUMS) in collaboration with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sabah recently organised a ‘Let’s Combat Corruption’ Programme.

The programme was also supported by Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) that aimed to benefit the target groups on the dangers of corruption and its impact on the community administration.

According to the programme coordinator, Kim Asbiyallah Shah Akim, the programme ran for five days and involved students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah 1 Pagoh, Johor and Saito College Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

“The organisation of the programme is an approach by SPRUMS to share experiences and ideas on the implementation of the programme with the Anti-Corruption Agency of Public Universities (UA) and other Higher Education Institutions (IPT),” he said when contacted by media after the programme.

He said the programme had provided space for UMS students, USIM Prevention Secretariat and Student Representative Council Saito College to exchange ideas and strategies of the programme in getting the right information on corruption.

Kim added, through the programme, the target group would be able to understand the effects of drug abuse through the talks and activities conducted.

“The ‘Let’s Combat Corruption’ Programme which was participated by 14 SPRUMS representatives also visited the MACC office in Putrajaya and was welcomed by the Director of Education and Community, Dato’ Shamsun Baharin Mohd Jamil,” she concluded. – ZMD (fl)

jaciah bola sepakFRIDAY, 17 APRIL – The Malaysian Women’s National Football team listed four players from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) who are currently in Thailand for two series of friendly matches in preparation for the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Football Championship.

Right winger for the national squad, Jaciah Jumilis (second right) said the first game will be against Thonburi FC and will take place today at 4.00 pm (Thailand).

“This game will definitely be a stiff fight, especially when Thailand is famous for fast playing and often the choice in any football championship. Even though Thonburi FC is a club from a university here, this game will prove to provide us with useful experience before playing in the AFF Women’s Football Championship in May,” she said when contacted by Media and Citra Division reporter.

Jaciah, who is a staff of UMS Security Division is determined to help the national team in the AFF tournament and hoped to reach at least the top three places.

She said, based on the commitment of all players and the aim to realise the hopes and strategies organised by the coach, I believe this national team would have the opportunity to go further in the championship participated by all the giants of ASEAN.

“My friends and I are grateful for the guidance and dedication of National Head Coach who is also the Director of UMS Sports Centre, Mohd Asyraaf Abdullah for sharing with us his knowledge to ensure that we are ever ready to compete in an international stage,” she added, and who was also a player with the Malaysian women football squad when the squad finished fourth at the SEA Games 2013 in Myanmar.

Along with Jaciah in the championship are Shereilynn Elly Pius and Mastura Majid of UMS Sports Centre including a UMS Sports Science student, Sihaya Ajad.

The national squad will face another tough test when they will play a friendly match against the Thailand national women’s football team tomorrow. – SS (fl)
