ISCN2SATURDAY, 21 JUNE – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has become a member of the largest global sustainable campus think tank, International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN) since 2013 and was recently welcomed at the Members Summit in Harvard University. UMS is also the first university in Malaysia to be admitted to ISCN.

Other notable members of ISCN besides Harvard University are Yale, MIT, Oxford University and London School of Economics.

At the Members Summit, UMS was noted for its contribution in leading sustainable campuses in this region through its recent conference, 1st Regional Conference on Campus Sustainability (1RCCS) held at the Gallery, Chancellery Building UMS in April 2014 which was organised by its EcoCampus Management Centre. UMS will continuosly lead the region as part of its environmental stewardship through regional conference. – FL

UMSKAL Tabung hajiFRIDAY, 20 JUNE – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through its Labuan International Campus is partnering with Tabung Haji (TH) through a variety of programmes involving undergraduates of the campus.

An officer with the Mosque and Islamic Affairs (BHEIM), UMSKAL, Ustaz Junaidi Kepli said both sides agreed on the programme which would involve undergrads, to be given priority for the success of the programme.

In addition, he said TH would like to introduce the company to employees of the university including their products which involved the interests of Muslims in the country, he said when representing the Director of UMSKAL, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali.

“UMSKAL and TH will provide a variety of programmes involving students and staff of the university, in the future,” he said.

He was speaking after receiving a courtesy call by the Deputy Director of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Ahmad Raffie Zurita, recently. – SS (fl)

KPM 3kFRIDAY, 20 JUNE – The Ministry of Education (MoE) is offering a cash prize of RM3,000 to the champion in a Short Video Contest MyBRAIN15.

The competition invites producers to submit a creative video with the theme ‘MyBRAIN15 Programme Generates Highly Educated Human Capital’ in documentary format, short skits or public service message.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Education, the theme was chosen to carry the message of passion to pursue postgraduate level education.

The statement added that the main objective of the competition was to provide information on funding opportunities to further their studies at postgraduate level as well as foster interest and creativity to the community in promoting the MyBRAIN15 programme.

Closing date for entries is 30 June 2014. Participants are reminded to limit the duration of their video to between two and five minutes only.

robotic wakil malaysiaFRIDAY, 20 JUNE – The Robotic Club Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will represent Malaysia at the Intelligent Car Racing, Global Freescale Cup Challenge International level at the Hanyang University, Seoul, South Korea on 30 August.

This notable achievement came through after winning the second spot at the National Competition at Multimedia University (MMU), Cyberjaya recently.

The success was further fuelled when another UMS Robotic Club sent did not come home empty-handed and was named the second runner-up out of 39 teams that took part. It thus enabled both UMS teams to receive a cash prize of RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively.

Meanwhile, the winner which would jointly represent Malaysia to Seoul was Swinburne University of Technology.

In the meantime, the team leader for UMS teams, Lim Kean Thong told Chancellery Media that he had high confident to compete in international tournaments.

“We are determined to reach the top three by conducting consistent preparation and doing some improvements to the smart car used for the competition.

“We will try to develop new technology to create innovation and technology references from outside,” he said, expressing joy over the success of UMS as the only institution of higher learning (IPTA) that will compete with participants from other countries.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni, Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr. Kasim Md. Mansur said the success was part of UMS efforts and formula in producing competitive students.

“UMS has always expose undergrads to various creative and innovative activities. Our students have shown good performance and their enthusiasm in other competitions before this. I believe in this international smart car racing, they are able to compete with the champions and runners-up from other countries,” he said. – SS (fl)

lantikan naikpangkatTHURSDAY, 19 JUNE A total of 66 staff (Professional and Administrative) of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) were feted to a ‘Handing of Promotion Letter’ Ceremony held today at the Café D’Sireh, Chancellery Building UMS.

The number comprised 32 staff from the Management and Professional group whilst the rest were support staff, which involved 23 posts of various grades.

The presentation of Promotion Letter was done by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah witnessed by UMS Registrar, Datuk Abdullah Hj. Mohd. Said.

Earlier, Datuk Dr. Harun reminded the staff promoted to double their efforts in executing their tasks in accordance with their new position and rank in performing their duties and responsibilities at the university.

“I urge all staff to walk the talk. What we say should be carried out wholeheartedly with a strong commitment to accomplish the tasks.

“When you are promoted; your efforts, time and work productivity should be increased in proportion with the recognition accorded to you by the university,” he said.

He added each employee had a role to play in achieving the goals targeted by the university through teamwork. – MA (fl)
