According to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Economist, Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr. Kasim Md. Mansur, one of the criteria for the termination of the policy was the modernisation of ports infrastructure in Sabah and Sarawak, the ability of local merchants to compete with foreign traders besides other issued involving national sovereignty.

Datuk Kasim, who is also the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni (HEPA) said the notion that some ships were not permitted to dock off Sabah and Sarawak waters was also not true.

“At present, other ships are permitted to dock here but they prefer to continue to Port Klang as the demand and population are more in the Peninsular than Sabah and Sarawak,” he explained during an interview session with journalists in relations to a report in the local newspaper calling for the Cabotage Policy to be abolished.

Datuk Kasim clarified that cost saving was a major concern in trading, thus many shipping companies chose to save on logistics charges by sailing directly to Port Klang based on the high demand there.

He also added that almost all countries in the world, which were surrounded by ocean also observed the same policy.

He said it was a measure undertaken to protect local merchants from being overtaken by foreign traders and as a means to protect the sovereignty of the country.

“The policy also allows the government to maintain the value of currency to prevent uncontrolled flow of money out of the country,” he further added. – SS (fl)

Among them are Terawih Prayers, Daily Tazkirah, Weekly Talks, Nuzul Al-Quran Talks, Zakat Fitra Collection, Tadarus Al-Qu’ran and others.

Also included is the online question and answer session opened during this holy month.

As such, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) community and those around it are invited to participate in these programmes.

MONDAY, 30 JUNE – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) recently sent 500 undergrads as beach cleaners volunteers to the Tanjung Lipat Likas beach.

The university through the Student Affairs and Alumni Department (HEP) had sent the undergrads as an effort to create awareness on environmental care and beach cleanliness among students.

According to an official of the department, Rohani Hadi, it was also to get the undergrads involved in community service.

Speaking when contacted by Chancellery Media, she said the programme started from 6.00 to 11.00 am and was part of the Astro programme, My Beautiful Malaysia.

She said UMS also sent some representatives to the art competition which was also part of the same programme.

The ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun representing the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Seri Panglima (Dr.) Musa Hj. Aman. – SS (fl)

MONDAY, 30 JUNE – The Student Welfare Committee (JAKMAS) Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) was feted in the Appreciation Night 2014 at the Billion Pavillion Waterfront Hotel recently.

The ceremony was to appreciate the contributions and commitment of JAKMAS 2013/2014 Session besides being a place to mingle with the university’s management level.

The ceremony was officiated by UMSKAL Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali. In his speech, he expressed his thanks and gratitude for the commitment and contributions by JAKMAS to the development and advancement of the university’s residential colleges.

He also advised all JAKMAS Committee members to always perform the duties entrusted to them with full responsibility.

The event also had a special award and certificate presentation ceremony to the JAKMAS committee members of both the residential colleges there.

The event was graced with a symbolic opening ceremony, which is a cake-cutting, UMSKAL students brass band and lucky draws. – SS (fl)
