ums bolaTHURSDAY, 10 JULY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) football team will join the KDM Football League 2014 that will start this coming 23 August.

UMS football team is invited as guest team to this competition involving 15 teams organised by the Kadazan Dusun Murut (KDM) Malaysia.

Other teams competing are KDM Ranau, Kota Marudu, Kota Belud, Kiulu, Penampang, Papar, Kimanis, Tenom, Keningau, Tambunan, Inanam, Sandakan, Putatan and KDM Main.

This was confirmed by KDM Malaysia President, Datuk Peter Anthony in a statement yesterday.

The competition offers cash prize of RM100,000 to the champion and RM50,000 to the 1st Runner-up. The teams finishing in third and forth positions will receive RM30,000 and RM10,000 respectively. – SS (fl)

ramadan kampusTHURSDAY, 10 JULY – Staff and students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) are invited to the Ramadan @ Campus today with the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Hj. Aman who is also the Pro-Chancellor of UMS.

The event will be held at UMS Mosque starting at 5.00 pm.

Among the activities which will be held included tazkirah Ramadan, iftar and fardhu prayers as well as terawih.

Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Hj. Aman will also be giving out contributions to those underpriviledged, especially students.

Several cabinet ministers are expected to attend the ceremony. – ZMD (fl)

mkptn reaksiWEDNESDAY, 09 JULY – The appointment of 15 new members of the National Higher Education Entrepreneurship Council (MKPTN) received positive feedback from students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

According to an undergrad from the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting (FPEP),Sharmine Ardilla Salleh, the combination of new members of MKPTN was seen to be more solid and hopefully would provide more input in developing the policy on entrepreneurship in higher learning institutions (IPT).

Another undergrad from the same faculty, Afrizal Mohd Sapei described the appointments as one of the government’s efforts to provide the best ecosystem for IPT students in making their way into becoming graduates with entrepreneurial mindset and future competent entrepreneurs.

Hynicherry Justin, an undergrad from the Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (FSSA) felt that the MKPTN appointments, which fielded corporate members in the industries and the government was a commendable effort by the government to increase the cooperation and involvement of the industry with IPT for the implementation of structured programmes based on entrepreneurship to empower the IPT apprenticeship programme.

One of the newly elected members of MKPTN yesterday was the Chief Secretary II Ministry of Education, Datuk Seri Dr Zaini Ujang.

Also appointed were the Chief Executive Officer of SME Corporation Malaysia, Datuk Hafsah Hashim; Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC), Datuk Norhalim Yunus and Chief Executive Officer of Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Berhad (PUNB), Dzulkifli Fadzilah.

Joining the ranks were the Director-General of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), Datuk Ibrahim Ahmad and Chief Executive Officer Unit Peneraju Agenda Bumiputra (TERAJU), Datuk Seri Husni Salleh.

Their appointment letters were presented by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

MKPTN was established in 15 March 2011 with the objective of supporting the ministry through its role as a catalyst to long-term change on the acculturation of entrepreneurship in IPT and becoming a bridge between IPT and the government, entrepreneurs, industry and alumni. – SS (fl)

pelajar umskalTHURSDAY, 10 JULY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through its Labuan International Campus (KAL) sent a delegation of students and staff of the university to preach at Sapulut District, Sabah recently.

According to the programme coordinator, Rafidah Arshad, the missionary-based programme was an effective way to expose participants to missionary skills as a freelance activity.

“Participants perform follow-up missionary work at the areas involved through various forms of social activities, education, social and welfare work that promotes understanding, warmth and fellowship among the community of all races and religions,” she said.

She added that the expedition that lasted for six days received support and cooperation from the Student Affairs Division (BHEP), Student Representatives Council (MPP) UMSKAL, Students Welfare Committee (JAKMAS) UMSKAL, Student Mentor Partners and Rakan Muda Secretariat UMSKAL.

“The expedition fosters a noble missionary network with volunteers from Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) Perak who was with the team the past six days,” she added.

The delegation consisted 14 pax and was accompanied by an independent preacher Ustaz Mohd Fadli Yusof and his wife, Ustazah Aisyah Nordin. – SS (fl)

formaldehid kajianWEDNESDAY, 09 JULY – A team of researchers from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) had discovered a technique to detect low concentrations of formaldehyde in fish instantly.

Researcher, Dr. Shafiquzzaman Siddiquee and some other members of researchers at the Biotechnology Research Institute succeeded in producing an electrochemical biosensor technology that can detect preservatives in fish in just five seconds.

According to Dr. Shafiquzzaman, studies have been conducted on the basis of electrochemical biosensors and enzyme technology imported from abroad that reacted with the preservative.

“This method is able to show results in just five seconds compared to a day, before this study was found, and with a 99 percent accuracy.

“Preservatives are usually used in the fishing industry to maintain the freshness of their catch and prevent damages caused by delicate organisms,” he explained.

According to the Food Act 1983, the level of permitted preservatives in fresh food is 5 micrograms per one gram.

Formaldehyde is a preservative used to prolong the lifespan of fresh fish but could threaten the health and safety of the public. – SS (fl)
