ain mediaMONDAY, 24 FEBRUARYUniversiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) presented awards to seven journalists for their commitment and active involvement in providing coverage to the university throughout 2013.

Journalist from New Sabah Times, Nor Ain Hassan topped the list of recipients when she was selected as Sensational Reporter 2013.

It was followed by journalist from Utusan Borneo, Conniepearl Juil for Most Dedicated Journalist; Current Affairs journalist with the Broadcasting Department Sabah (RTM), Firdaus Abdullah (Choice Broadcast Journalist 2013) and New Straits Times Press photographer, Malai Rosma (Choice Photographer 2013).

Most Promising Journalist Award 2013 was won by Erdie Hazwan Abdul Wahid (Harian Metro), whilst Hisyamuddin Ayub from Utusan Malaysia as the Main Preferred Journalist 2013.

Another award presented was Choice UMS Alumni Category which was won by Maria Isek.                                                                                                                      

The award was presented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic and International, Prof. Dr. Shariff A. K. Omang at the Media Night which was held at one of the leading hotels in Kota Kinabalu.

The ‘Paling Manang’ Reporter award was also presented that evening and it went to RTM TV Production Unit host, Shahirah Syazwani who was selected as the winner because of her stylish outfit worn that night which was themed ‘Red Carpet’.

Earlier, UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun bin Abdullah presented souvenirs to media representatives.

MPPFRIDAY, 21 FEBRUARY – The Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who is also the Minister of Education accepted the proposal mooted by the President of the Student Representatives Council (MPP) of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS)to have the Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) in the campus.

He praised the idea suggested by the President of MPP, Fandyi Sanizan Jurup which he said would help ease the burden of students with the high cost of living nowadays.

“The suggestion proposed by Fandyi is very good and it should be considered at the ministerial level,” he said.

While highlighting the proposal, Fandyi added that the existence of KR1M was important to see to the welfare of the students so as not to be affected with the sharp increase in the prices of goods.

“The price increase in the market could affect students. Therefore, as a representative, I urge the ministry to consider this proposal,” he said in the function held at the official residence of the Deputy Prime Minister.

Fandyi was with UMS delegation consisting of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Prof. Dr. Shahril Yusof; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni); Assoc. Prof. Datuk Hj. Kasim Hj. Md. Mansur and Head of the Student Affairs and Alumni Department, Mohd. Raffie Hj. Janau.

Also present was the Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Seri Panglima Hj. Yahya Hussin representing the Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Hj. Aman.

The visit to the Deputy Prime Minister with the Student Leaders of universities was to celebrate the new MPP of public universities across the nation including the management of the universities who had helped in the development of students’ personality. – ZMD (FL)

Lawatan IPMBTHURSDAY, 20 FEBRUARY – As part of the Lobster Stock Improvement Project and Petagas River Awareness Campaign, the Marine Borneo Research Institute (IPMB) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) organised a Petagas River Village Visit to the institute yesterday.

The visit involving 30 residents of the village were welcomed by the Director of BMRI, Prof. Dr. Saleem Mustafa.

In his welcoming speech, he said that the main objective in organising the visit was for IPMB to share their knowledge while giving opportunity for the villagers to have a closer look at the lobster and fish breeding management techniques done in UMS.

“It is also an effort to spread our knowledge in line with the government’s call on higher education to encourage knowledge transfer programmes to the community,” he stated.              

He also expressed hope that the Lobster Stock Improvement Project and Petagas River Awareness Campaign which was in collaboration with the Putatan District Office would help improve the socio-economic condition of the village as well as increase awareness on the importance of maintaining the river’s cleanliness.

Meanwhile, the head of the community project, Prof. Datin Seri Panglima Dr. Ann Anton in her talk said that 18,000 lobster seeds were released into the Petagas River since the start of the Lobster Stock Improvement Project and Petagas River Awareness Campaign in April 2013.

She urged all members of the community to collectively work together to ensure that the planned project would run smoothly.

The delegation also visited the Aquarium and Marine Museum before being taken around UMS campus.

misi bantuanTHURSDAY, 20 FEBRUARY – Even though the flood situation in Beaufort had improved, it did not prevent Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) community to do their part in providing assistance to the victims of the affected areas.

About 20 members of the Non-academic Management and Professional Officers Association (PPUMS) today presented aid in the form of mattresses, clothing, foodstuff and cash to ease the burden of the affected families involved in the calamity.

According to the Secretary of PPUMS, Sarianshah Shamsuddin, the assistance provided to the Membakut and Beaufort families were the first phase while the second phase would involve distribution to families in Tenom.

UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah when met expressed his thanks and gratitude to all parties who were willing to contribute.

“I fully support the noble efforts organised by PPUMS and hope that more people would join in this humanitarian aid,” he said.

The humanitarian aid organised by PPUMS was not only well received by the campus community but also attracted various companies around Kota Kinabalu. Among those who came forward were Shell Timur Sdn Bhd., Bundu Tuhan Ranau Social and Recreation Club and Green Fund Enterprise.

Meanwhile, spokesman for the Beaufort Flood Operations Room said four evacuation centres were still opened as of yesterday. The temporary centres were Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Beaufort III, Beaufort New Hall, Kukut Village Hall and SMK Gadong. – ZMD (FL)

TUESDAY, 18 FEBRUARY – The welfare and comfort of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students was one of the concerns of UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah in providing a harmonious campus environment.

According to him, efforts to increase the facilities at students residential colleges would be intensified to guarantee the safety of our students.

“Recently I visited the students’ residential colleges and had sent directives that they be equipped with CCTV,” he said.

He also urged students to care for the facilities provided by the university as well as revive the spirit of gotong royong among occupants of the residential colleges.

“Use the activity of cleaning the colleges’ premises as part of your exercises whilst fostering closer rapport with each other,” he added.

Prof. Datuk Harun also reminded students of UMS not to be swayed by extremism in politics which did not bring benefit to their learning.

“Opportunities to further your education does not come by often, carry out your responsibility as a university student by demonstrating your commitment and sincerity in performing your duties as a will from the Almighty,” he stressed.

At the Vice-Chancellor’s Message 2014 which was held at UMS Chancellor Hall this morning, Prof. Datuk Harun also announced the change of residential colleges’ names formerly known under alphabets ABCD and E to residential college Tun Dr. Mahathir (AB), residential college Tun Mustapha (CD) and residential college Tun Fuad Stephens (E).

Marketable graduates, besides having the right image and good public perception had led to UMS receiving more than 4,000 in enrolment every year and had churned out a total of 46,318 graduates since its inception two decades ago. – ZMD (FL)
