Perjanjian Tongkat Ali2FRIDAY, 15 AUGUST – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), recently signed a commercialisation agreement with a local company, Borneo Rainforest Herbs Sdn. Bhd. to market UMS products.

Two of the products namely AliStyrTM (Tongkat Ali Stirrer Impregnated with Honey) and ALITETM (Tongkat Ali Tea) were developed by a researcher from the Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (FSSA), Ag. Ahmad Mohd. Yunus.

Through the agreement, Borneo Rainforest Herbs Sdn. Bhd. was given the exclusive license to the use of technical information besides being trained by the researcher on the production of these two products.

According to sources issued by the Centre for Research and Innovation (PPI) UMS, the agreement also enabled the industry to use and sell the AliStyrTM and ALITETM in the Malaysian market.

After signing the agreement, Borneo Rainforest Herbs Sdn. Bhd. had since brought the two products to a Health Products and Medicine Exhibition and Conference at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Hong Kong. – ZMD (fl)

tiga naik pangkatFRIDAY, 15 AUGUST – Three Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) staff had been appointed to new posts starting early August and end of July.

They were Dr. Aliakbar Gulasan, Dr. Ramzah Dambul and Norti Sirin.

Dr. Aliakbar was appointed as the Director of UMS Centre for Alumni Affairs effective 31 July, while Dr. Ramzah will serve as Deputy Director of the Centre for Strategic and Academic Management starting 01 August.

Norti was appointed as Head of Academic Services effective 01 August.

spor tangguhFRIDAY, 15 AUGUST – Discussions on the completion of research papers with respect to the detection and control of Ganoderma was postponed to a date to be announced later.

The Notice of Suspension was issued by the Sustainable Palm Oil Research Unit (SPOR), Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (FSSA) in a statement today.

According to the statement, SPOR previously had set 19 August as the date of discussion, but for reasons which cannot be avoided it had to be postponed.

sukan staffTHURSDAY, 14 AUGUST – A total of 26 teams will be competing in the 3rd Borneo University Students Sports (SUKMAB) starting 18 August at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

The teams taking part are those from the Public and Private Higher Learning Institutions (IPT) around Borneo including Brunei and Kalimantan, Indonesia.

The biennial event among others aimed at providing opportunities for IPT students to compete, mirroring the sports held in Peninsular Malaysia besides identifying potential talents that can be highlighted.

It is also an effort to support the country’s core sports and give exposure to the students of Sports Science and Physical Education (PJ) programmes in Sabah and Sarawak IPT to high-level management of sports.

The Championship which offers seven sports is expected to be officiated by the Minister of Youth and Sports Sabah, Datuk Hj. Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan. – SS (fl)

tctp monyet belandaTHURSDAY, 14 AUGUST – The opportunity to witness first hand the Proboscis Monkey (Nasalis larvatus) at Padas Damit Forest Reserve provided an invaluable experience for participants of the Third Country Training Programme (TCTP) 2014.

They were brought down the Garama River at the Garama Base Camp Beaufort, the group were excited with the existence of the species.

A participant from Cambodia, Pang Phanit said, the experience of seeing the monkey species living in their natural habitat was a precious gift for him, being this was his first visit to Malaysia.

“I did not think Malaysia is rich with diverse population of forest wildlife. This is one of the most extraordinary experiences for me,” said this officer with the Cambodian Forest Management Office.

The group also had the opportunity to get a closer look at fireflies (Lampyridae) along the mangrove swamp of the Garama River at night.

For Forest Conservation Unit Chief of the Natural Resources and Environmental Division, Laos, Kanyasone Vilaphong, seeing fireflies is an experience he cannot forget.

“The lights illuminated from this insect is totally mesmerising. I believe, besides me, other participants are also delighted to see it,” he added. – ZMD (fl)
