bendera sukmabTUESDAY, 19 AUGUST – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) contingent comprising 50 athletes are ready to face the challenges in the 3rd Borneo University Students Games (SUKMAB) which will be held in UMS starting 20 to 22 August.

The athletes would be competing against athletes from other Institutions of Higher Learning in Borneo including from Brunei and Kalimantan, Indonesia.

UMS' participation in this game received a boost by the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali who urged all athletes to fight till the end to defend UMS’ glory in sports among universities.

“I hope with your determination and enough training, we would be able to collect Gold.

“You are our hope. Don’t waste this opportunity given,” he said. He was speaking at the handing of SUKMAB flag ceremony to the UMS contingent.

He further added that UMS athletes who were competing must maintain their discipline and to uphold the good name of UMS, and take this opportunity to foster good relationship with athletes from other countries.

UMS athletes would be competing in 7 types of sports namely, Futsal, Volleyball, Beach Volleyball, Sepak Takraw, Ping Pong, Chess and Pentanque. – MA (fl)

Serah TugasTUESDAY, 19 AUGUST – An appreciation and Handover Duty ceremony from the former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni (DVC SAA), Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr Kasim Hj Md Mansur to the new DVC SAA, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali was held today.

The Handover Duty ceremony was held at a simple ceremony at the Galeri, Chancellery Building and attended by Principal and Senior Officers of the University.

Speaking during the ceremony, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Mohd. Harun Abdullah reminded UMS staff to always be sincere in carrying their duties and responsibilities assigned to them.

“With your support, I believe we will be able to perform any task effortlessly so that its benefits would be delivered to the community,” he added.

Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali in his maiden speech said although the task of being the DVC SAA was not easy, he was determined to do his best towards achieving university’s excellence.

TNCHEP baharuMONDAY, 18 AUGUST – Director of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali was appointed as the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni (TNC HEP).

The appointment takes effect from 16 August 2014 until 15 August 2017, for three years.

He succeeds Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr. Kasim Md Mansur, who held the post for five years until 15 August 2014.

Served as Assistant Registrar at the Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and language in his early career with the University, Dr. Ismail is a native of Sabah who is hardworking and aggressive in pursuing self-achievement.

In 2000, he successfully completed his Masters in Maritime History of Civilisation from Universiti Malaya (UM), before earning his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the same field in 2004.

He later served as a lecturer in 2005 and was later appointed as the Head of History Programme, School of Social Sciences after three years of service.

For his achievement and leadership qualities in various aspects, Dr. Ismail Ali was appointed as Deputy Director of Centre for Co-curricular and Student Development (PKPP) in 2009 before assuming the post of Dean for the Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language in 2010.

After two years in office, he was appointed as the Director to lead UMSKAL.

The University’s reliability of him as an academician who will be able to impart patriotism among UMS students especially in the aspect of motivation and self-esteem as well as his strength in the designing of leadership programmes to shape student-leaders, were seen to have the appropriate criteria to fill the post of Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni.

“Within these three years of my appointment as the DVC, I will do my best to fulfill the responsibility entrusted specifically to enhance the character and welfare of students,” he said in a brief meeting with Chancellery Media. – SS (fl)

Dayangku RozlinaMONDAY, 18 AUGUST – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Centre for Alumni Affairs is tracking its alumni who have graduated since 1999.

According to the Assistant Registrar of the Centre, DK Rozlina Pg. Aliuddin, the government is currently actively tracking graduates who have yet to register and update their personal details in UMS Alumni system.

“What we hope is that each UMS alumni would have that sense of belonging and contribute back to their alma mater after undergoing a three to four years of study here,” she said.

She added, the Centre also planned to implement a variety of activities that will involve UMS alumni such as MPP Reunion, a Golf Tournament and Alumni Nite to gather all previous graduates.

“We also plan to establish a UMS Alumni Association as a platform for alumni to contribute ideas towards the development of the university,” she further added.

To date, UMS Centre for Alumni Affairs had launched six UMS Alumni Chapter in several zones such as Kota Kinabalu, East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Klang Valley, Lower Interior of Sabah, Labuan, Tawau and Sandakan.

sukum futsal 39MONDAY, 18 AUGUST – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Woman Futsal team enters the Final in the Malaysian Inter-University Staff Sports (SUKUM 39) which is held at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Johor.

They beat the host with an aggregate of 4-0 at the semi-finals yesterday to face defending champion Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) team that edged Universiti Tun Hussein Onn (UTHM) earlier.

Meanwhile, UMS Sports Centre Director, Mohd Asyraff Fong Abdullah in a statement said UMS woman futsal team had earlier defeated Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) team 3-1 at the opening.

Asyraff who is also the coach added that UMS had also trounced UniMAP 5-0 earlier in the group match.

“Our aim this time is to win the game (futsal),” he quipped.

Meanwhile, a futsal player, Evra Malubin when met by Chancellery Media said her team mates were in high spirits to face the finals.
