The population of this island is active in the planting industry and production of seaweed cultivation, making Selakan Island one of the leading seaweed producers in Southeast Asia.

However, due to the weakness in seaweed industry management system at this island, seaweed producers at Selakan Island find it difficult to generate a stable income to support their families, earning at less than RM600 a month.

The residents of Selakan Island fail to see the opportunities that exists in their environment and do not realise the true potential of the seaweed industry if they cultivate the seaweed themselves.

Thurs, Enactus UMS with their determination to improve the quality of life of the residents of Selakan Island, has changed the obstacles faced by seaweed entrepreneurs by introducing Kappaweed project, an effort that is expected to provide a better future to the residents of Selakan Island, thus changing their lives.

The first step achieved by Enactus UMS was when a workshop on “Strengthening Skills” was organised with the help of the Director of Seaweed Research Unit Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). The workshop teaches some teaching modules that are able to hone the skills of 40 villagers in the Selakan Island in asset and business management.

Assistant project leader, Ahmad Radhy Abdullah has also propel this project by introducing an organising system among seaweed entrepreneurs at Selakan Island, namely Kappa Organisation.

The organisation is made up of seaweed entrepreneurs itself; a businessman, Haji Rubani bin Isnin was appointed the patron to ensure the Kappaweed project is implemented systematically and is sustainable.

With the collaboration of the Sabah Tourism Board, Enactus UMS hopes that this project would gain support from local community and would be able to revive the seaweed industry in Selakan Island. - (fl)

Buka Puasa KALMONDAY, 29 JUNE –The Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Professor Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah called on all heads of departments or supervisors to always monitor the development projects implemented by UMS.

According to him, the habit of being on the ground should be practiced by all heads of departments to ensure that projects are completed in accordance with the prescribed specifications set by the university management.

He hoped that heads of departments and the officials concerned would communicate among themselves and to monitor the projects closely to ensure that no projects are delayed or have problems at the expense of the good name of UMS.

“Sometimes the projects are in question due to lack of communication among officials who are given the responsibility.  Communication between departments is essential so that any problems can be addressed and resolved,” he said.

He said this when met after attending a breaking of fast with staff of UMS Labuan International Campus, last Friday.

At the event, a total of 10 selected employees received a special contribution from the management of the university.

Datuk Harun advised the staff to continue in working hard to ensure that UMS remain competitive in the national and international levels as well as to enhance their careers.

“We must work hard to ensure UMS is always on the right track at local and international levels,” he said.

Datuk Harun added, staff must improve on giving better services to their customers, including local and foreign students who are assets to the university.

He also reminded students to be involved in community activities as it was part of training to become leaders of the future.

Datuk Harun hoped students would continue to focus on their primary responsibility to gain knowledge and experience while studying at UMS.

“Students need to focus on their education because it is the priority of their family and also the university,” he concluded. –ZMD (fl)
