EcoCampusparticipants 1TUESDAY, 23 DECEMBER– Continuing Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Sustainability Week which was from 8 – 12 December 2014, EcoCampus Management Centre had organised a second series of talks at UMS Sandakan Campus last Friday.

The talks were presented by the Director of UMS EcoCampus Management Centre, Dr. Awangku Hassanal Bahar Pg. Bagul; Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) –Sustainable Development for Biodiversity and Ecosystems Conservation (SDBEC) Sabah’s Chief Advisor, Kazunobu Suzuki; a prominent scientist from Hokkaido University, Prof. Mitsuru Osaki and Research Fellow for EcoCampus Management Centre, Dr. Nobuyuki Tsuji who was also from the Hokkaido University.

Suzuki , in his speech, expressed the possibilities of finding mutual interests in research ground to strengthen the existing bond between UMS and JICA-SBEDC Sabah.

Earlier, the Dean of the Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture, Prof. Wan Mohamad Wan Othman in his speech further elaborated the many expertise at the faculty that promised tremendous potential in different kinds of research topics and development.

Prominent scientist, Prof. Osaki’s talk triggered a lot of attention especially during the Question and Answer session when he spoke on having a technology that can go as far as detecting diseases on crops.  He also touched on the availability of precision technology such as the satellite to collect real time accurate date to help researchers in making decision and conclusion.

The Japanese delegation was impressed with the massive campus area and the amount of on-going development taking place at the faculty.  They had also suggested many ways to improve the on-going developments there. –FL

okuTUESDAY, 23 DECEMBER – A total of 20 special needs students (OKU) of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) attended the Disability Equality Training (DET) Course held at the Multipurpose Hall Residential College CD, recently.

The course was organised to introduce to the public on issues and discrimination faced by OKU besides changing society’s outlook, system and present policies of this group.

According to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) UMS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali, the course gave a lot of exposure to the participants and could become a stepping stone towards minimising the gap with society.

”I believe, we might not be able to reap what we sow today, but at least it will be enjoyed by the underpriviledged and the society in future,” he said at the official opening of the course.

His speech was read by the Head of the Residential College CD, Dr. Mohamad Nizam Nazarudin.

He added, the course also highlighted on the priviledges for the OKU.

The programme was jointly organised by Residential College CD and UMS Student Affairs Department, as well as the Psychology and Social Health Research Unit. – HH & ZMD (fl)

ums gymMONDAY, 22 DECEMBER – Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is offering a discount on their Rehab & Fitness Centre (RFC) gymnasium membership, which is fully run by the faculty.

According to a statement issued by FPP, a 20 percent discount will be given to its membership subscription either monthly or yearly according to its package.

The statement added that the RFC membership is open to students and staff of UMS including the public.

RFC Gymnasium which opens every weekday starting at 12.00 noon until 10.00 pm also offers treatment in physiology, psychology and physical especially to those who suffers from osteoarthritis and stroke.

Monsoon Camp 2014MONDAY, 22 DECEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah Housewives and Women’s Club (KESUMBA) once again successfully organised a Monsoon Camp 2014 held at the Outdoor Development Centre (ODEC) UMS, recently.

The programme which was participated by 44 participants from among KESUMBA members’ children as well as UMS staff was the third edition organised by KESUMBA.

According to a statement issued by KESUMBA, the programme was aimed at training mental endurance and survival skills of its participants besides fostering sporting spirit and unity, thus promoting closer rapport among participants.

The closing ceremony of the Monsoon Camp 2014 was officiated by the President of KESUMBA, Datin Baidah Ibrahim on the last day of the programme.

The Monsoon Camp 2014 programme was jointly organised by the Sports and Recreation Bureau of KESUMBA and the Health and Fitness Club under UMS Sport Science Programme. – HH (fl)

Wad KanakKanakMONDAY, 22 DECEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through the Bursar Department Staff Club recently organised a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme to the Children's Ward of the Likas Women and Children Hospital.

According to the Acting Bursar of UMS, Zallifah Shadan, besides offering contributions to the hospital, the programme was aimed to instil a sense of social responsibility towards the local community especially in Kota Kinabalu.

“Such programme hopes to strengthen the relationship between UMS staff and the local community,” she remarked, who headed the UMS Bursar Department Staff Club delegation.

Meanwhile, the Club's President, Silawati Khamis planned to step-up their community activities next year to build closer rapport between UMS and the community.

Zallifah, acting on behalf of the Bursar Department Staff Club also presented books, toys and disposable diapers to the Head Nurse of Likas Hospital, Masda Rasti. – HH (fl)
