JTMK maulidurTUESDAY, 11 FEBRUARYThe Information Technology and Communication Department (JTMK) conducted a knowledge and community mission with the villagers of Kampung Kuala Laut, Papar in conjunction with the Maulidur Rasul celebration Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) level recently.

The programme was simultaneously held at Surau Nurul Hikmah and 1Malaysia Village Centre and was officiated by state assemblyman (ADUN) Pantai Manis, Datuk Haji Abdul Rahim Ismail.

In his speech, he urged that such activities be further intensified, not only to commemorate the birth of the prophet Muhammad s.a.w. but as a good practice which should be continued.

 He also praised the efforts of UMS in giving donations to the residents of the village.

Over 30 JTMK staff along with the villagers had a gotong royong to clean the surrounding areas of the surau and 1Malaysia Centre. At the same time, a special class on the use of Microsoft software to primary school students was conducted in a pleasant atmosphere.

Prayer mats, rihal, PA system, grass-cutter, carpets, white boards and surah Yassin manuscript were also handed over to the management of Surau Nurul Hikmah, Kampung Kuala Laut and Surau Ar-Rahimi, Kampung Laut Papar. – MAA [FL]

csr kgbinsulokMONDAY, 10 FEBRUARYThe gotong royong activity at Kampung Binsulok organised by the Chancellery Department, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) was not only a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme by the department but a chance to be with the local community in carrying out one of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. sunnah.

Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Ariffin Arif said the practice of gotong royong was a sunnah of the prophet and Muslims were required to practice this sunnah of Prophet Muhammad in their everyday life.

“In addition to gotong royong, the CSR at Kampung Binsulok also gave the chance for UMS staff to be with the local community and to champion knowledge in addition to strengthening relationship with each other.

“These are all the sunnah of the prophet and to commemorate Maulidur Rasul by performing the sunnah of the prophet which is praiseworthy,” he said when officiating the CSR of Chancellery Department at Kampung Binsulok.

A total of 140 UMS staff along with the Sabah Brunei Community Association (PMBS) and the villagers worked together in repairing the mosque, library, KAFA huts and the school building of Sekolah Kebangsaan Binsulok, Membakut.

PenyerahanPoring1compressedMONDAY, 10 FEBRUARY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Bursar Department recently organised a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programme at SK Poring-poring, Inanam in conjunction with Maulidul Rasul.
 
Headed by the Bursar himself, Hj. Rizal Othman, the Bursar Department along with its more than 100 strong staff consisting of all levels held a gotong royong in and around the school’s premises where some buildings were given a new coat of paint.  The school’s much-needed kitchen was added with a new refrigerator, kitchen stove and racks which were also donated by the Bursar Department.

A collection of books for their Resource Centre and some clothing for the pupils were also handed over to the school Principal, Budhi Rahmad bin Hj Suparno. An adopt-a-child programme was also held, which would ensure that the ‘adopted child’ would be taken care of by their adopted parent until they finished their school in SK Poring-poring.
 
Hj Rizal in his speech said that the Malaysian Education Ministry had urged all departments under its ministry to conduct CSR so as to be able to reach to the grassroots and for them to understand more about the functions of the bursar department in an organisation.

“Our duty is to inform the community our role and function. It is for us to enlighten the community on financial planning, for the future of their children,” he said before ending his speech.

PMR MAPIMMONDAY, 10 FEBRUARYEducation, knowledge and skills play an important role in determining our future direction.

Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah said the three basic elements should be in every student so as to be competent when they enter the working world.

“Set your target, focus on your goal, keep the momentum of your excellent achievement,” he said at the Outstanding Student Awards Ceremony 2013 at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sungai Damit, Tamparuli, a school under the Malaysian Academic Publishing Council (MAPIM). His speech was read by the Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Prof. Dato’ Mohd Hamdan Hj Adnan.

Datuk Harun added that outstanding students were nurtured through the support and motivation encouraged by both parents who always strive to provide financial assistance and materials for school.

“Their sacrifices cannot be compensated by the children in monetary value, but enough by achieving excellence in education and a better life of their own. These are more meaningful for the parents,” he said.

He also reminded students to appreciate the sacrifices made by their teachers who were dedicated in educating and ensuring success for their students.

The event which was jointly organised by UMS Publishing Unit saw a total of 45 outstanding students from St. Michael, Penampang; SMK Sungai Damit, Tamparuli and SMK Bundu Tuhan, Ranau received their awards.

The opening ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Local Government and Housing Sabah, Datuk Hj. Hajiji Mohd. Noor.

sukiptFRIDAY, 07 FEBRUARYThe Higher Learning Institution Games which entered its third day today saw Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) contingent added more medals to the medal tally by collecting one gold, one silver and one bronze as of 4.00 pm today.

The gold was contributed through 400 metres men hurdles, silver through 400 metres women hurdles and bronze through 1,500 metres women.

With the new addition, the medal standing for UMS contingent is 2 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze.

UMS had earlier earned several medals through Taekwondo. The first gold was contributed through Pomsae Men Group, followed by silver in Pomsae Women Individual and bronze through Pomsae Women Group, Pomsae Mixed and Pomsae Men Individual events.

Two silver medals were added through the Javelin Women category and Men Shot Putt. Another bronze were further added to UMS bronze medal standing through athletics in the 5,000 metres Women.

Head of UMS Secretariat, Charles Thomas when contacted said, UMS team still had the potential of adding more medals to the medal tally as there were still some athletes who had yet to compete in the finals.

“Among some of the final events involving UMS athletes are the 4x100 metres Women and Javelin,” he disclosed.

The championship will go on until 16 February 2014 at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and is participated by 107 contingents from both the public and private higher learning institutions. – SS (FL)
