pos bergerakTHURSDAY, 18 JULY – Staff and students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) can now enjoy services offered by Pos Malaysia Berhad through the ‘Post on Wheel’ service which makes its presence every Friday at the Main Campus of this EcoCampus University. This is an initiative undertaken by the Postal Administration Section, Registrar Department UMS in an effort to ease postal management besides cutting down on time and cost by not having to go to the Main Post Office in town.

According to the Assistant Administrative Officer of the section Norazah Hamzah, she said that at present the opening hours are from 2.00 pm – 4.30 pm where the service will be at the lobby of UMS Library.

“In future, we intend to have the same service at other JSPIU Buildings by rotation depending on suitability and weather conditions. The surrounding communities are also welcome to make use of this service,” she said when met by Corporate Reporter in Kota Kinabalu.

She added that the mobile post office services include road tax renewal, car insurance renewal, utility bills payment, postal order, Western Union besides Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB) and Amanah Saham Nasional (ASN).

“At the same time, the mobile post office also offers other postal products such as stamps, Pos Laju, Pos Express and Registered Post,” she added.

buku crop1WEDNESDAY, 17 JULY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is having a book exhibition and sale at the Kent Teachers’ Training Institute (IPG), Tuaran starting yesterday. According to UMS Publication Unit Publication Officer, Anicius Justin Adeh, the book exhibition and sale is open as early as 8.30 am and will last till this Friday.

He said the exhibition is to promote new books published by UMS Publisher especially books on education. It also acts to promote extensively research done by UMS academicians, to the public aiming at educators thus helping to reinforce UMS as a publisher of academic-based books, he said when met by reporters in Kota Kinabalu.

He added that UMS through the Publication Unit will also be having the same book exhibition and sale at IPG Tawau on 23 -26 July and IPG Keningau 29 - 31 July. All are welcome. - FL

anugerah landskapMONDAY, 15 JULY – In line with the efforts by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) being the first EcoCampus University in Malaysia, a Best Landscape competition will be held in conjunction with the UMS Innovation Award 2013. The competition which is coordinated by the School of Sustainable Agriculture (SPL) involves all standalone Departments, Schools, Centres, Institutes and Unit (JSPIU).

According to a statement issued by the School, judging will be done from 26 – 30 August 2013 involving evaluation covering all areas around the building especially the main entrance and those not covered by the Development and Maintenance Department or appointed contractor.

Among the aspects which will be evaluated included arrangement and beautification, assessment will start from the parking lot of the Head of Department to the lobby of the office being evaluated. It involves the upkeep and maintenance of plants and landscape furniture, well-kept trees, shrubs and groundcover plants.

According to the statement, evaluation will also include plants and landscape furniture which has already been arranged for the comfort and shade of staff, visitors and students away from the unpredictable weather conditions such as strong winds, heavy downpour and hot sun, besides the creativity to make use of available areas and to segregate those areas into useful corners such as for reading, relaxing and socialising.

Another aspect which will be evaluated is the type of plants that will accentuate the aesthetic value of the garden through the application of designs such as colours, texture and sizes of different leaves, flowers and branches of trees, shrubs and groundcover plants. The selected plants should have the aroma that could contribute to attracting birds and other creatures.

All cooperation and commitment from staff and students of UMS in making this competition a success is welcomed, in line with the concept of EcoCampus which UMS has adopted. enactus juaraTUESDAY, 16 JULY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) once again displayed an excellent achievement when they defended their title as the champion at the Enactus (Entrepreneurial. Action. Us) Malaysia National Exposition (EMNE 2013) which was held at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) in Kuala Lumpur recently.

The UMS Enactus team edged the Enactus teams of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) at the Finals making UMS champs for two years running. The victory once again enabled UMS to represent Malaysia at the Enactus World Cup Competition which will be held at Cancun, Mexico on 29 September until 1 October this year.

According to a team member Celine Alexandra, the community project presented by the UMS Enactus team attracted the attention of the judges. Celine, who is also the Director of the Payao project said it had attracted many followers as it involved the efforts of the Mabul Island community in increasing their catch thus generating a higher income.

Another project which was presented was the ‘Unfold’ Project which helps the Underpriviledged (OKU) and the poor. The Director of the project, Aarston Friend Dickson expressed his appreciation because the project was well received by the judges and members of Enactus Malaysia.

“We would like to thank Enactus Malaysia for organising this EMNE Competition; we were able to share our experience to help with the underpriviledged here in Sabah,” he added.

The Director of the Entrepreneurial Development Centre Student Affairs and Alumni (HEPA), Mat Salleh Hj. Ayub also expressed his appreciation and gratitute to the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of HEPA, Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr. Hj. Kasim Hj. Md Mansur for their support towards the team.

“We would also like to thank the Director of Labuan International Campus UMS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali, Alumni and all those who had in one way or another rendered their assistance, thus helping the team win the competition this year,” he said.

The competition, which was formerly known as Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) was participated by 28 teams which represented their own public and private higher learning institutions. This yearly competition organised by Yayasan Enactus Malaysia aims to highlight the creativity and innovation on community projects by university students in this country, among others. A total of 12 UMS students who took part in this competition ensured that the champion trophy belongs to the UMS Enactus team. – FL

kebajikan ranauFRIDAY, 12 JULY – For the purpose of nurturing the spirit of self-involvement towards improving the well-being of locals, the Management and Professional Non-academic Officers Universiti Malaysia Sabah (PPUMS) had organised a Corporate Social Responsibility activity through its Public Service Programme at the Putera Harapan Orphanage, Ranau recently.

The PPUMS delegation consisted of 13 members headed by its Welfare Bureau Head, Azmi Jumat was warmly welcomed by the inmates of the orphanage who had been eagerly awaiting for their arrival. The representative of Putera Harapan Orphanage Management, Wani also welcomed the move by PPUMS whilst informing them that the centre had children ranging from the age of 7-11 years old.

The delegation spent some time with the 20 inmates of the home including preparing some light refreshments for the children. They also helped build a sepak takraw court at the premises. Staff from UMS Health Centre then presented a talk on health care to the inmates of the Putera Harapan Orphanage.

The President of PPUMS, No’man Hj Ahmad presented contributions by members and individuals to Wani who represented the home. Among the contributions were daily needs such as rice and kitchen utensils, clothings, medicines, sports equipment and stationeries including books and school shoes.

The PPUMS social awareness programme not only gave the opportunity for its members to interact with inmates and management of the Orphanage but also to share with the inmates their own experiences so that they would be more motivated in their every day routine. Thus Azmi Jumat, who was the Head of the Public Service Programme, urged government agencies and private companies including individuals to help with the Orphanage and to give monetary contributions or daily basic needs to the home. – FL
