Festschrift was an academic project of PPIB and aimed at honouring the deeds of the honouree and his contributions to the scholarly field both in national and international levels.

According to the dean of PPIB, Prof. Dr. Vincent Pang, the festschrift  entitled ‘Qasidah Tinta’ reflected the interest of Prof. Dr. Ahmat who used writing as a way to contribute towards the field of knowledge and changing the mindset of society.

The said festschrift contained 15 papers contributed by friends and former students of the professor from within and outside the country involving the field of history, social sciences and humanities.

FRIDAY, 29 NOVEMBER – Third year students of Hotel Management Course, School of Business and Economics (SPE), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will be organising a Carnival of Business Innovation 2013 on 5 December 2013.

The programme coordinated by Song Xiu Hui under the supervision of Special Programme Module lecturer, Juliana Langgat will start from 8.00 am until 5.00 pm at the Dewan Canselor (Chancellor Hall) premises, UMS.

Song Xiu Hui said that the main objective of the carnival was to highlight the various business innovations which covered numerous fields.

She said besides students from the Hotel Management Course, students from other courses such as Entrepreneurship and Food Management Science were also involved.

“A lot of activities are planned in this carnival which will be held for a day. Among them, food demonstration from invited chef, talks by the Malaysian Association of Hospitality (MAH) including exhibition and creativity products,” she said in the statement.

Besides that, Song Xiu Hui also added that visitors would be spoilt for choice with the various games on site such as Onion Crush, Fruit Attack and Test and Guess.

As such, she welcomed the public especially students under the Hotel and Tourism Management course of Higher Education around Kota Kinabalu to this carnival.

THURSDAY, 28 NOVEMBER – The recent Tamu Gadang held in conjunction with Universiti Malaysia Sabah 15^th Convocation Ceremony came alive with the Fishing Competition organised by the Student Council Representative (MPP) in collaboration with the Year 2 and 3 students of Sport Science Management, School of Education and Social Development (SPPS) at the School of Psychology and Social Works (SPKS) lake.

The competition which was the final recreational activity before the Convocation came to a close saw Franco Morrow capturing the top spot when he caught a snakehead fish weighing 900 gm, bringing home cash prize of RM700, hamper, fishing rod, medal and certificate.

1^st Runner-up was Sibin Sinokit with his telapia weighing 500 gm whilst Murkam Hj. Hussien took the third sport with his 450 gm winner. They each received cash prize of RM500 and RM300, hamper, medal, fishing rod and certificate.

Prizes were also given to participants with the most caught catch of the day. The winner was Mohd Arip Mohd Irwansyah with a total of 63 catch bringing home cash prize of RM50, medal, hamper and certificate of participation.

The closing and prize giving ceremony was officiated by College CD Head, Dr. Mohamad Nizam Nazarudin representing the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Student Affairs and Alumni, Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr. Hj. Kasim Hj. Md. Mansur.

Earlier, College E Fellow, Hasnol Noordin presented 20 lucky draw prizes to the lucky winners.

The fishing competition had attracted almost 100 entries from the surrounding areas. – SS

WEDNESDAY, 27 NOVEMBER – The Mosque and Islamic Affairs Unit (UHEIM) UMS held a talk which focused on ‘Alms Giving and Charity’ with the aim to encourage among fellow Muslims the practice of giving.

Held at UMS Mosque itself, the talk was presented by Arabic and Islamic Civilisation lecturer from Teacher Training Institute Gaya Campus, Ustaz Hj. Mohd. Syahir Ismail.

In his talk, he analysed the definition of alms giving and charity in Islamic context. He said alms giving which he mentioned meant setting aside a portion of our money or property towards the path of Allah S.W.T., whilst charity meant the never ending charity, doing good deeds which will be rewarded even in the afterlife.

 More than 20 participants attended the talk. UHEIM Talk which is held every Wednesday at 9.00 am at UMS Mosque focusses on analysing social issues in Islamic context, besides strengthening relationships among UMS community. – SM
