AstroRadioMONDAY, 13 OCTOBER – The Communication Programme under the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) held an Astro Radio Workshop today at its Main Meeting Room.

The workshop was led by Astro Radio’s Operations, Sales and Marketing Strategy Manager, Syazleey Zalsyam who briefed the undergrads on the function of a radio station particularly Astro Radio stations.

“We are the first radio station in Malaysia to introduce format radio station,” he said, who was also popularly known as DJ Uno.

Earlier, the Coordinator of the workshop, Hj. Mahat Jamal who is also a lecturer on broadcasting said that the workshop was part of the class in this particular course to expose undergrads on the day-to-day operations of a radio station.

“It is good that the undergrads get to listen first hand from the experts themselves,” he said when met by Chancellery Media after the workshop.

The workshop was attended by more than 100 undergrads from the Broadcast and Journalism Course and Communication Course under the Mass Communication Programme in FKSW.

The workshop also included Sales Manager, Moon Liew; Music Executive and Presenter of Erafm Sabah, Illy Lia; Music Executive and Presenter from Hitzfm Sabah, Erica (Rica) Sham and Music Executive and Presenter of MYfm Sabah, Mang Kuan who each touched on their respective portfolio.

Dean of FKSW, Prof. Dato’ Haji Hamdan Haji Adnan later presented mementoes to representatives from Astro Radio as a token of appreciation. - FL

kayuhan samuderaMONDAY, 13 OCTOBER – A total of 45 students from the Higher Learning Institution (IPTA) from across the country participated in the Ride Across the Ocean 2014.

The inaugural programme was organised by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

The flagging off ceremony was officiated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) UMS, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali who represented the Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah at the premises of UMS Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL), on Sunday.

Dr. Ismail said UMS will strengthen the eco-campus programmes that promotes the culture of cycling among students in the campus.

He said the Vice-Chancellor himself wanted the students to use bicycles to reduce smoke pollution, especially when attending lectures and activities on campus in Kota Kinabalu, Labuan and Sandakan.

“UMS will implement various measures to ensure that students use bicycles on campus in accordance with the goals of eco-campus programmes,” he said when launching the programme.

He also thanked UUM with the support of MoE in selecting UMS as the first destination and UMSKAL as the venue for the launching of the Ride Across the Ocean 2014.

Also present were the Secretary of MoE Higher Education Sector, Hazaly Jali; Director of UMSKAL, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murnizam Haji Halik; Director of UMS Sports Centre, Mohd Asyraf Fong Abdullah and Director of UUM Sport Centre, Shafferi Rejab who was also the Project Director of the Ride Across the Ocean 2014 Programme. – SS (fl)

BAJET 2015 ASTRO AWANI 80x60FRIDAY, 10 OCTOBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) was the location for the live telecast of the Pre-Budget 2014 on Astro Awani in conjunction with the announcement of the Budget 2015 which will be announced by the Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak.

During the interview, the panel from UMS, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Ir. Dr. Rosalam Sarbatly touched on the basis of industry such as energy and infrastructure sectors need to be improved to develop the state.

“The development of energy and infrastructure sectors in Sabah are lagging behind and these could be the factors to the lack of interest among investors to invest in Sabah,” he said.

He added that the rich natural resources in Sabah should be used to attract industry players and investors to contribute to sustainable development.

“The interaction with natural resources such as petroleum and gas can be made into the state government’s deposit to develop energy sources such as hydroelectricity that would be able to control the increase in electricity tariffs,” he said.

He also touched on UMS’ efforts to produce skilled human resources in the field of oil and gas by offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to assist the state government in developing related industries in the state.

For information, security deposit is for the deposit of residential facilities and laboratories involving about 1077 graduates of the science and humanities of UMS main campus

According to a statement issued by the department, the list of graduates affected can be checked through www.ums.edu.my/bendahari .

EAUC ok pix 1FRIDAY, 10 OCTOBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is delighted to announce that it is now a Member of the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC), the UK’s only sustainability champion for the further and higher education sector.

UMS is the first university in Asia to join EAUC.

In a statement released by UMS EcoCampus Management Centre; by joining the EAUC, UMS has joined a network of over 220 other institutions and 3,500 individuals who are all working to drive sustainability to the heart of their institutions.

According to the statement, the decision to join the EAUC was made as part of UMS' continuing commitment to sustainability. This will help promote a whole institution approach to economic, social and environmental change. By joining as a whole institution, every member of staff and all students can become involved and enjoy the benefits.

Among some of the benefits provided are access to the EAUC’s resource bank, an online repository full of strategies, policy documents, guidance and tools.

In today’s situation, it is essential that all members of staff consider sustainability in the work they do, to make financial as well as environmental savings where possible.
