kelas iqraFRIDAY, 07TH NOVEMBER –Universiti Malaysia Sabah Mosque and Islamic Affairs Unit (UHEIM) are now opening classes for al-Quran and Iqra’ classes and half day tuition during the end of 2014 school holidays.

According to the statement from UHEIM, it is open especially for Universiti Malaysia Sabah staffs and the nearby community in Kota Kinabalu.

The programme will begin from 24th November until 19 December 2014 at the UMS Mosque.

The statement also mention that the classes for al-Quran and Iqra’ will be conduct on Monday until Friday, 8.30 am until 1.00 pm while the tuition classes start from 2.00 until 5.00 pm.

pasukan debat umsTHURSDAY, 06th NOVEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) continues to be the focus in the institutions of higher learning level debate competition.

Latest, UMS once again become the focus at the National Environment Debate. The national level competition was held in Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP).

The competition, organized by Department of Environment, Universities Debating Council Malaysia (MADUM) and UNIMAP, saw Universiti Malaysia Sabah becomes third out of 32 private and public institutions of higher learning competes at the national debate.

This achievement makes UMS to bring home RM1,000 cheque value.

International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) becomes the champion in the competition and the runner-up goes to Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

UMS Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni, Assoc. Prof. Madya Dr. Ismail Ali, expressed his proudness and congratulate the team’s achievement.

“Kudos and bravo for the team in winning and adding lustre to UMS name at the national level. On behalf of the university, I supported and wish that the debate activities will keep on continuing and kindling in order for the students to develop their identity and enhancing their soft skills,” he added.

seaweed sairinTUESDAY, 4 NOVEMBER – Sabah State Government have always giving full supports to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) efforts to develop research and innovations in seaweed.

Sabah Assistant Minister of Agriculture and Food Industries, Datuk Sairin Karno said, seeing the importance of the seaweed industry in increasing the state’s economy and helping the efforts to eradicate poverty particularly the people who lives along the shores, supports to the higher education institution like UMS is important. This is important since the institutions will ensure knowledgeable and skilled human capital can be born in this area.

“Expertise from research agencies and bodies including the public and private higher education institutions are crucial in supporting the government’s efforts in developing the upstream and downstream seaweed industries to be more organized and systematic.”

“Universiti Malaysia Sabah efforts in doing the research and innovation centred to the seaweed industries is corresponding with the government’s aspiration,” he said. He said during the opening ceremony of ‘UMS Seaweed Showcase 2014’ at the Banquet Hall, Chancellor Hall Building in UMS last night.”

He also mentions the Seaweed Research Unit is in accordance with the industries demand. He also hopes that the unit will become the nation’s reference centre in research and development of the seaweed field.

UMS Seaweed Showcase 2014 is the first showcase in various research products, innovations and food products based on seaweed. A few faculties, centres, institutes and units were also involved in the showcase. -MA(JA)-

Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Aman said, the products technologies and innovations can be beneficial to the farmers, breeders and fishermen. They are the person who always with high spirits and determined to make the agriculture field as their income.
 
“The Sabah Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day (HPPNS) 2014 celebration’s theme, ‘Agro-technology, Catalyst for Transformation’ is in accordance with today’s world. This carnival is a way in giving exposure the latest technologies in agriculture to them.”
 
“HPPNS celebration is another way to appreciate farmers’, breeders’ and fishermen’s’ efforts and contribution to the state,” he said during the opening ceremony at Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Sandakan Campus Branch recently.
 
Datuk Seri Panglima Musa was also presenting the High Achievers certificates to the winners in the HPPNS 2014 programme.
 
Also present during the opening ceremony were the Sabah Deputy Chief Minister cum Sabah Minister of Agriculture and Food Industries, Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin, Sabah Permanent Secretary of Agriculture and Food Industries, Datuk Ujang Sulani, Sabah State Secretary, Tan Sri Sukarti Wakiman and UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. seaweed forumMONDAY, 03RD NOVEMBER – The industries sectors always welcome research products produced by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to be marketed in both the local and international markets.

Adabi Consumer Industries Product Manager, Azatul Izan Mohamed Nordin said, the university researchers are welcome to cooperate with both of their research and development and/or the company marketing department to identify the current market demands and therefore producing product with high demand.

She mentions it as one of the panellist in a forum organised by UMS in conjunction with the UMS Seaweed Showcase 2014 at the Banquet Hall, Chancellor Hall Building today.

AEON Retail Senior Manager, Stephanie Phang Siew Leng informed that they always brings Malaysian products to be introduced to the overseas market through various programme. One of it is the ‘Taste of Malaysia’ programme in Japan.

“We are now searching for local products especially Sabah’s product to put on our branch shelves and also the international market,” she said as the second panelist for the forum.

The UMS Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition Dean, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sharifudin Shaarani was the moderator for the forum with theme ‘Industry and University Collaboration, Determinant to the Nation’s Future Wellbeing”.

The UMS Seaweed Research Unit Head, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suhaimi Md. Yasir was also another panellist for the forum. -HH(JA)-
