SK Bukit KalamTUESDAY, 21 OCTOBER – A total of 71 Year Six pupils of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bukit Kalam made a study visit to Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) recently.

According to the group leader, Ustaz Solihin Saripudin, the visit was aimed to provide opportunities for Year Six pupils to know more closely the real experience in a Public Higher Learning Institution (IPTA).

He also hoped that the visit would be able to raise the motivation and enthusiasm of the students concerned to study hard to ensure they have the opportunity to pursue their studies to a higher level.

“We want to expose students to the real world of university life, including the opportunity to pursue their education to a higher level especially to UMS,” he said.

The visit to UMSKAL was among some planned activities after school for the students who had sat for the UPSR 2014. – SS (fl)

larian ecocampus2TUESDAY, 21 OCTOBER In conjunction with the 20th anniversary of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), a 7-kilometre EcoCampus run will be held on 16 November 2014.

According to a statement issued by UMS Sports Centre, the run is open to the public in three categories; School Students (18 years and under), Senior Open and Veteran Categories.

Entry fee for the Senior Open and Veteran category are RM35.00 per person, while for the School Student Category is RM25.00 per person.

The statement further added that the first 400 participants who registered will receive a t-shirt for free.

Prizes for the 1st to 30th in each category will receive cash prize, medal and certificate.

IEPP 1MONDAY, 20 OCTOBER – An Intensive English Preparatory Programme (IEPP) formerly known as International Students Foundation Programme or ISFP was organised today conducted by UMS Link Holdings Sdn Bhd, to welcome Batch 25 of International Students to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

The welcoming ceremony was held at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and attended by 69 new international students including three from Cambodia. This was the first batch of Cambodian students registering at UMS.

UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah said that this programme will equip the new international students with the needed foundation to assist them in preparation for the next stage of their education in UMS as well as socialising with different background of students both local or international. His speech was read by Molly Donna Datuk Awang Sham, Acting Director of the Centre for International Affairs.

“We intend to increase the number of international students even further, with curriculum aligned with the majority of education systems around the world, making it easier for students to pursue their studies here,” Datuk Harun further stated.

Earlier, Group General Manager of UMS Link Holdings Sdn Bhd, Ramlan Awang Ali in his speech advised that today’s job market looked for graduates who have knowledge and skills such as the ability to communicate with others, work under pressure and in teams, organise their time well, and meet deadline.

The IEPP was introduced in 2003 to assist international students who do not have the basic English entry requirement to pursue their studies in Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree programmes in UMS. – FL

NIOSH logo 1TUESDAY, 21 OCTOBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through the Centre for Occupational Safety and Health (PKKP) is inviting UMS community to contribute articles relating to OSH to its upcoming Journal of Occupational Safety and Health (JOSH).

The journal is concerned with areas of current information in occupational safety and health issues in Malaysia and throughout the world. It is intended to serve the OSH community, practitioners, students and public while providing vital information for the promotion of workplace health and safety.

The journal is published twice yearly, in June and December.

anti rasuah kalMONDAY, 20 OCTOBER – Four secondary schools at the Federal Territory of Labuan joined the ‘Say No to Corruption’ programme organised by Universiti Malaysia Sabah Anti-Corruption Secretariat (SPRUMS) Labuan International Campus (KAL) Branch recently.

According to the Psychology Officer of the Advice and Counselling Section of UMSKAL, Nur Iman Reedzal, the schools involved were Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Pantai, SMK Labuan, SMK Mutiara, and SM Sains Labuan.

She said the programme was to give exposure on the evils of corruption and to instil the values of anti-corruption among students.

In addition, she also said that the programme was able to provide opportunities for the young generation to offer their views and suggestions that could bring about benefits to SPRUMS to produce graduates who were with integrity and corruption-free.

Various activities were organised including talks, group-training, telematch, appreciation night, ice-breaking, logo creating and KAL explorace. – SS (fl)
