buah pinggangMONDAY, 30 SEPTEMBER – The public are advised to go for regular health checks to detect chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes and to detect kidney problems at an early stage.

Dean of the School of Medicine (SPU), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Prof. Dr. D. Kamarudin D. Mudin said the public should not take this lightly which he described as a silent killer.

“Kidney disease does not have symptoms that are obvious. Without health checks, most patients would only realise it when it reaches critical stage,” he stressed.

He said this when contacted by Chancellery Media to comment on an article in a local newspaper which reported that kidney patients are on the increase every year.

Dr. Kamarudin said chronic disease patients such as diabetes and high blood pressure are at risk in contracting this illness.

He added that urinary tract infection and kidney stone patients have the same risks.

“In this matter, they should control their eating habits and always adhere to doctors’ advise especially when taking medication,” said Dr. Kamarudin.

According to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) 2012 report in the newspaper today, 4,000 patients have kidney failure every year and the number is expected to grow if effective preventive measures are not given priority. - FL

SMK MADAISATURDAY, 28 SEPTEMBER – A total of 36 students and four teachers from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Madai, Lahad Datu made a study tour at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) yesterday.

The school’s maiden visit to UMS included visits to interesting places in UMS such as the Library where the Prime Collection Gallery is housed and the Marine Museum located at the Borneo Marine Research Institute (IPMB).

One of the teachers, Satiah Andunga who is also UMS alumni said since her graduation three years ago, she could see a lot of changes done by UMS Management towards the development of the university.

“I am amazed by the changes. A lot of places to visit. I hope UMS will continue with its good intentions,” said this School of Education and Social Development (SPPS) alumni .

The Form 1 students of SMK Madai had the opportunity to visit UMS Museum at Chancellery Building. - FL

polar equipmentFRIDAY, 27 SEPTEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) continues to steal the limelight when the Asian Rugby Federation Union (ARFU) entrusted UMS researchers to conduct heart pulse rate patterns and the movement of referees during the Rugby Championship Seven Aside Asia Tour Series 2013.

The Championship which will be conducted at four locations until November sees UMS School of Education and Social Development (SPPS), Sports Science Programme lecturer, Dr. Mohamad Nizam Nazarudin being given the mandate to conduct the research.

He will be assisted by another UMS SPPS Sports Science lecturer, Pathmanathan K. Suppiah and two students Tomny Wong Kee Kiet and Cheah Wan Xin, using research instruments such as Polar RCX3 watch, s3+stride sensor and G5 GPS sensor.

According to Dr. Nizam, the Polar RCX3 watch is used to measure the heart rate and the tools are able to provide immediate response after each match.

“The s3+stride sensor is fixed to the shoes to measure speed and distance, whilst the G5 GPS sensor acts to record the running pattern. The video recording of the match would also be done to match with the research results,” he said in a statement to the UMS Chancellery Department Media .

He added that two researches were conducted in the first two championship where Malaysia played host, the Malaysia Sevens followed by Asia Sevens Under 20 besides the Thailand Sevens Championship which was held at the White Elephant Nation on 21-22 September.

He will be continuing with his research on the Asia Tour of India Series in conjunction with the India Sevens Championship, 12-13 October, before closing with the Singapore Sevens Championship on 9-10 November 2013. – FL

enactus juaraFRIDAY, 27 SEPTEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Enactus continues to organise various activities for the underpriviledged to imrpove the quality of life for these people.

Recently, UMS Enactus through their Unfold Project had organised a programme with HIV and AIDS patients of Rumah Kasih, Kota Kinabalu.

According to the UMS Enactus President, Ilvenie Jemial, the programme focusses on efforts to improve their self-esteem besides promoting an active lifestyle.

“In this project, we also taught them the basic technics of dancing and physical fitness. Among others, zumba and aerobics,” she said.

She added that the project was also supported by some gymnasiums and the local community who had helped towards its success.

She said this when contacted by UMS Chancellery Department Media Division.

UMS Enactus team was the Champion at the Enactus Malaysia National Exposition (EMNE 2013) and will be representing the country to the World Cup Enactus at Cancun, Mexico on 29 September until 1 October. - FL

The meeting will discussed some agendas that needs the final decision of its members.

According to a statement issued by the cooperative, among some of the agendas to be discussed were the election of four Cooperative Board of Directors Members, to deliberate and agree on the Budget for the year 2013/2014 including considering and widening of scope and investment limit from the surplus of cooperative monies.

Other agendas to be discussed included the approval and consideration of any suggestions to the amendment of minor rules of the cooperative, the division of profit and other agendas.
