TUESDAY, 17 SEPTEMBER – The Vice-Chancellor of UMS, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah urged researchers to focus more on strategic areas with potential to add value and contribute to the nation’s development, especially Sabah.He said, UMS will prioritise research in the agriculture and tourism sector adding that the marine industry in Sabah’s economy structure was also given special attention in the university’s research agenda.
“I hope all research and development efforts in producing innovative products will be continued because this not only helps elevate the university’s performance but also contribute towards the development of the nation,” he said.
He said this in his speech at the official closing ceremony of the Research and Innovation Competition (PEREKA) 2013 at the Lecture Hall 2 Complex, UMS.
The ceremony was officiated by the Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Kamarlin Ombi who represented the Minister, Datuk Masidi Manjun.
A signing ceremony to commercialise feed supplements for chicken was also held. The agreement involved UMS with Syarikat Mukti Bina Sdn Bhd and UMS with Maya B. Farm, a farming company based in Brunei Darussalam.
PEREKA 2013 saw a total of 215 entries for the research category and 152 entries for the innovation category. Of the number, 11 research won the gold medal award under the research category, whilst 42 gold medals were won in the innovation category. – FL
