UMS Investment Policy for Sustainability Initiatives

At Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), we are committed to advancing sustainability in all aspects of our operations, including how we manage investments. Our Investment Policy for Sustainability Initiatives outlines our approach to responsibly investing in projects, research, and infrastructure that align with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.

As part of our dedication to fostering a sustainable future, UMS integrates sustainability into its investment decisions by focusing on key areas such as renewable energy, health innovations, and socially responsible practices. In support of this mission, UMS has established the Centre for Sustainable Society Engagement, which serves as a platform to promote inclusive, community-driven sustainability initiatives and to strengthen our collaboration with stakeholders at the local, national, and international levels.

Through this policy and the Centre, UMS ensures that its educational and research goals are achieved while actively contributing to broader global sustainability objectives.

 Key Areas of Focus:

1)Renewable Energy Investments

UMS prioritises investments in renewable energy technologies to support sustainable campus operations. These investments are aligned with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote energy efficiency. By exploring innovative energy solutions, UMS aims to reduce its environmental impact and serve as a model for green campus development.

2)Health and Social Responsibility

As part of its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) integrates health-related research, services, and education into its broader sustainability and investment strategy. Through Hospital UMS (HUMS), the university delivers essential healthcare services to both the UMS community and the wider public, including underserved populations in surrounding areas, thereby reinforcing its role in promoting public health and social equity.

Complementing these efforts, HUMS Bergerak, the university’s mobile healthcare service, extends medical outreach to remote and rural communities, further strengthening access to quality care. Additionally, Politeknik UMS plays a vital role in developing skilled healthcare professionals by supporting technical and vocational education aligned with sustainable healthcare practices.

UMS prioritises research and innovation that address global health challenges, such as pandemics and public health emergencies, through impactful, sustainable approaches. In line with its values, UMS also supports socially responsible investments that contribute to improved global health outcomes and equitable access to healthcare for all.

The Centre serves as a bridge between the university and society, focusing on empowering local communities with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to address environmental, social, and economic challenges.

Through collaborative outreach programs, educational workshops, and community-driven projects, CSSE promotes the practical application of sustainability principles at the grassroots level. By translating academic research into accessible knowledge, the Centre supports lifelong learning, inclusive growth, and the creation of resilient communities in line with national and global sustainability goals.

CSSE embodies UMS’s commitment to making sustainability a shared responsibility, ensuring that no one is left behind in the journey toward a more sustainable and equitable future.
