ums gymMONDAY, 22 DECEMBER – Faculty of Psychology and Education (FPP), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is offering a discount on their Rehab & Fitness Centre (RFC) gymnasium membership, which is fully run by the faculty.

According to a statement issued by FPP, a 20 percent discount will be given to its membership subscription either monthly or yearly according to its package.

The statement added that the RFC membership is open to students and staff of UMS including the public.

RFC Gymnasium which opens every weekday starting at 12.00 noon until 10.00 pm also offers treatment in physiology, psychology and physical especially to those who suffers from osteoarthritis and stroke.

Wad KanakKanakMONDAY, 22 DECEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through the Bursar Department Staff Club recently organised a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme to the Children's Ward of the Likas Women and Children Hospital.

According to the Acting Bursar of UMS, Zallifah Shadan, besides offering contributions to the hospital, the programme was aimed to instil a sense of social responsibility towards the local community especially in Kota Kinabalu.

“Such programme hopes to strengthen the relationship between UMS staff and the local community,” she remarked, who headed the UMS Bursar Department Staff Club delegation.

Meanwhile, the Club's President, Silawati Khamis planned to step-up their community activities next year to build closer rapport between UMS and the community.

Zallifah, acting on behalf of the Bursar Department Staff Club also presented books, toys and disposable diapers to the Head Nurse of Likas Hospital, Masda Rasti. – HH (fl)

ACBI 1FRIDAY, 19 DECEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) through its Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (FSSA) will collaborate with the Asian Chemical Biology Initiative (ACBI) team in promoting chemical biology throughout Asia and to accelerate international collaborations in the region.

Speaking during a brief meeting with top-notch researchers of ACBI, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and International), Prof. Dr. Shahril Yusof said that we can learn the social aspects of pharmacological where all the indigenous people were using herbs in the jungle, and the use of the chemicals in it.

“I believe topical medicine should also be explored,” he added, whilst acknowledging and thanking the guest researchers who would be doing tutorial lectures with students of UMS.

Meanwhile, Prof. Motonari Uesugi of Kyoto University (Japan) who was the chief organiser of ACBI Kota Kinabalu stressed that they would develop collaborations and train the people of Sabah in Japan.

Also present at the meeting held at the Main Meeting Room of FSSA were seven experts in chemical biology from other universities in Japan, Korea and Singapore besides UMS researchers and lecturers. – FL

BohruFRIDAY, 19 DECEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) went a step further by establishing a Borneo Heritage Research Unit (BoHRU) to conduct research related to Borneo artistic heritage such as visual arts, music and creative.

Led by its first Unit Head, Dr. Low Kok On, the unit among others will publish academic writing, especially books and journals related to the field of arts with focus on the indigenous people of Borneo.

According to the Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Seri Haji Hajiji Haji Noor, the establishment of BoHRU was timely to preserve the heritage of Borneo since it was the root to the ethnic identity of the natives of Sabah.

“Personally, I fully support the establishment of this unit in order to conserve the field of Borneo heritage which is priceless. This heritage is the heritage of our ancestors, just by doing a lot of research we can highlight to the public its value,” he urged.

His speech was read by Assistant Minister 1, Ministry of Local Government and Housing (KKTP) Sabah, Datuk Dr. Joachim Gunsalam at the official opening of BoHRU at Dewan Resital UMS, yesterday.

At the function, two books were published by BoHRU titled ‘Teka-teki Warisan Peribumi Sabah Terpilih’ and ‘Dokumentasi Teka-teki, Peribahasa dan Cerita Jenaka Lisan Orang KadazanDusun, Murut, Bajau dan Melayu Brunei”.

BoHRU is a unit under the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Heritage (FKSW), which conducts research covering Brunei Darussalam, Kalimantan, Sabah and Sarawak since 2012. – ZMD (fl)

KASTAM GSTFRIDAY, 18 DECEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Labuan International Campus lecturers and students were among the 200 participants who attended the talk on Goods and Services Tax (GST) held recently.

The talk which lasted almost two hours was presented by the Director of GST Division, Hasney Haji Yahya and Customs Enforcement of GST Division, Gaven Werjerlun at Podium D, UMS Labuan Tower.

The programme jointly organised with Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) and Royal Malaysia Customs Department (JKDM) Federal Territory of Labuan was officiated by the Director of UMSKAL, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murnizam Haji Halik.

The talk was aimed at enlightening in more detailed the GST implementation which will take effect from April 2015.

Also present was the Senior Assistant Director of Customs II cum Head of GST Division, Hallun Haji Mutalib and Deputy Registrar of UMSKAL, Zamri Mohamad Tuah and Head of UMSKAL Bursar Division, Mohd. Nazir Abd Manan. – ZMD (fl)
