perjumpaan tnchepaTHURSDAY, 02 OCTOBER – Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali reminded Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students to use campus facilities at the residential colleges wisely and sensibly.

He stressed that vandalism should not be happening among UMS students who were disciplined.

“UMS spent a large amount each month for maintenance and utility costs for the residential colleges, and UMS Student Affairs Department (HEP) is committed to ensure that students are comfortable.

“However, students should also jointly be responsible when using all the facilities provided and cooperate in the college activities such as gotong-royong (communal work),” he said.

He said this during a meeting with college students of residential college AB at the residence college’s hall.

According to him, the Department of Student Affairs also emphasised the personal development of students by implementing a programme based on goals to hone their skills.

More than 1,000 students of residential college AB attended the meeting session. Also present were the Head of Student Affairs Department, Raffie Janau and Head of the Residential College AB, Fauzie Sarjono as well as fellows of Residential College AB. – MA (fl)

campus survivalTHURSDAY, 02 OCTOBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) ‘Campus Survival’ programme was held to guide new undergrads of the university.

Deputy Director of UMSKAL, Dr. Geoffrey Harvey Tanakinjal said ‘Campus Survival’ UMSKAL 2014 was also to prepare new undergraduates to face life as a university student.

In addition, students can also learn to adapt to the new environment and learn to be independent without depending on others and build a positive character and have self-confidence in facing challenges as undergrads.

‘Campus Survival’ Programme was to develop high level communication skills when dealing with others and to be able to build a strong identity as an undergrad and to provide opportunities to first year undergrads to be active in various fields and not to rely solely on academic,” he said.

He said this when launching the closing ceremony of the programme at the Labuan Sports Complex recently.

A total of 54 participants joined the programme held for the third time with the motto ‘Campus Life is the Best’. – SS (fl)

DATUK RAYMOND TANTUESDAY, 02 OCTOBER – The Minister of Industrial Development Sabah, Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah recently visited the Faculty of Engineering (FKJ) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to strengthen bilateral relations.

During the visit, FKJ led by the Dean, Prof. Ir. Dr. Rosalam Hj. Sarbatly also discussed with the ministry on the direction of oil and gas industry in Sabah.

According to a statement issued by FKH, the faculty was also planning to share their expertise in the field of oil and gas to provide training to industry players, particularly in Sabah.

During the visit, Datuk Raymond also visited the laboratories at FKJ.

The faculty currently offers Diploma in Engineering Oil and Gas starting September this year.

Also present at the discussion were FKJ Deputy Dean of Academic and International, Dr. Sariah Abang, Heads of Programmes and lecturers who were involved in academic programmes related to oil and gas. – ZMD (fl)

taming mas kalWEDNESDAY, 1 OCTOBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) Dance Troupe, Taming Mas took part in the Mini Citrawarna 2014 Procession at Labuan Square recently.

The programme organised by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Labuan Branch was held in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year (TMM) this year.

Taming Mas presented a dance from the Suluk ethnic group which combines three types of dance namely Tarirai dance, Mengiluk and Igal-igal where the dances were usually performed during festivals and special ceremonies such as Regatta Lepa, official ceremonies and weddings.

About 300 dances representing eight groups including 30 dancers, coaches and crew from UMSKAL took part in the annual programme.

Besides Taming Mas, seven other dance troupes that took part were Labuan Matriculation College, KDCA Labuan, Dayak Association of Labuan and ASWILA (Angkatan Anak Seni Labuan).

Also took part in the procession were Antap Budaya Group (SMK Pantai), Labuan International School (LIS) and Rumpun Anak Seni (SK Pekan 2). – SS (fl)
