bolingWEDNESDAY, 3 SEPTEMBER – The passion, commitment and cooperation shown by members of the Tenpin Bowling Club Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in organising the Open International Tenpin Bowling Championship received praises for successfully bringing together more than 100 local and foreign participants qualified to enter the finals.

More interestingly, this tournament was also participated by top names in bowling such as Mika Koivuniemi from Finland, Paeng Nepomuceno and Biboy Rivera from the Philippines and Wang Yu-ling from Taiwan.

The tournament, which began on 26 August ended on 31 August at the Centre Point, Kota Kinabalu in conjunction with Malaysia’s 57th Independence Day celebration and offered a total cash prize of RM240,850 as well as motorcycles and bicycles.

Two categories namely Graded, opened to local players and International Open for players who were qualified after the heats.

Organising Chairman, Awang Suhaizam said this international tournament was the first organised by the club and received overwhelming response especially from local bowling fans.

“The organising this time was in conjunction with UMS 20th years of establishment this year. Through the involvement of participants, we helped promote UMS to the community,” he said.

He added that the tournament was sanctioned by the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC), the Asian Bowling Federation (ABF) and the World Tenpin Bowling Association (WTBA).

He added that this tournament was also endorsed by the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC), the Asian Bowling Federation (ABF) and the World Tenpin Bowling Association (WTBA).

“Due to the success and support, this tournament will be organised once in two years,” he added.

The tournament also received sponsorship from Sabah GWGFx BBH Group Sabah as the main sponsor and FADA Engineering and Asli Jati Engineering as co-sponsors.

As for the open category, Mika Koivuniemi emerged champion with a record of 2273 points and took home cash prize of RM24,000, while the Graded category was won by Sheridan Abd. Latiff who took home cash prize of RM12,000. – CD (fl)

pelajar antarabangsaTUESDAY, 02 SEPTEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) enrolled 165 international students from nine countries at the new students registration for the 2014/2015 Academic Session.

Of the total, China had the highest number of 130.

Other students included 17 from Brunei, five each from Indonesia and South Korea, three from Zimbabwe and two from Maldives.

The rest one each from Algeria, Chile and Japan.

This was announced by UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah at a press conference yesterday. – SS (fl)

psm bimbing msmTUESDAY, 02 SEPTEMBER – The Student Affairs Department (HEPA) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) highlights the leadership skills of senior students in coordinating the Orientation Week or Minggu Suai Mesra (MSM) to the new students who reported for the 2014/2015 Academic Session.

According to UMS Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali, the move was intended to train UMS undergraduate to practise creativity and leadership in organising big events in line with the government’s call to produce competitive human capital with quality.

“The undergrads, also known as Pembimbing Suai Mesra (PSM), helps the university to guide new students adapt to campus life besides shaping their discipline and character,” he told media.

He said he was confident of the ability of each PSM, who were also given courses and leadership training in preparation for the smooth flow of MSM this time.

“Indeed, their involvement in the MSM are needed and appreciated. This approach will continue in future as it is able to improve their soft skills,” he added.

UMS MSM will continue until 07 September 2014 with a variety of activities that will help prepare the new students mentally and physically to be called UMS undergraduates who are excellent and well-balanced.

With the theme ‘Peneraju Legasi Transformasi’, the 20th MSM would see a well-coordinated event in line with UMS 20th anniversary celebration this year. – SS (fl)

MSM Thumbs UpTUESDAY, 02 SEPTEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) became the first choice for applicants of Degree Programmes in Public Higher Learning Institutions (IPTA) when it recorded the highest number of enrollments for the 2014/2015 Academic Session.

According to a report in a national newspaper today, UMS was in first position with a total enrolment of 4,851 students recorded on the last day of registration, which was held simultaneously across the country yesterday.

Based on this total, 69.6 percent of UMS new students were female while 30.4 percent male.

The total included 1,992 students from Sabah, 2,295 (Peninsular Malaysia), 399 (Sarawak) and the rest were international students.

UMS also received admissions from the Disabled (OKU), in total six were physically handicapped and partially blind.

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) followed in second place with a total enrollment of 4,659 and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) with 4,154 students. – ZMD (fl)

msm2013 350x233MONDAY, 01 SEPTEMBER – A total of 4,851 students will be studying at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) for the 2014/2015 New Intake Session.

The total includes 1,992 students from Sabah, 2,295 (Peninsular Malaysia), 399 (Sarawak) and 165 (international students). Today, the students check in at each of the residential college of UMS starting at 8.00 am.

Also registering today are those offered under the household income mode lower than 40%.

All students will undergo a weeklong Orientation (Minggu Suai Mesra [MSM]) to prepare themselves for campus life.

Among the activities for the MSM included the University Introduction, Oath-taking, University Briefing, Recreation Programme and Talent-time as the highlight.

Also expected to be present are UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali and all Principal and Senior Officers of the University. – SS (fl)
