Edrus1FRIDAY, 30 JANUARY – Heads of Departments responsible for their Expenditure Management (PTJ) must ensure a thorough planning and to plan their activities according to priority, taking into account their committed expenditure.

This was mentioned by Deputy Bursar, Mohamad Edrus Othman in his presentation at the start of the ‘Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) 2016-2017 Expenditure Management Workshop’ organised by the Bursar Department of UMS, and scheduled for two days starting yesterday.

“The objective of this workshop is to ensure that the spending of each PTJ be within the allocation given for 2015 as well as to check their Expenditure Management for the years 2016 and 2017,” he said.

Mohamad Edrus reminded all PTJ that the proposed expenditure must not exceed the Allocation Limit set earlier and that they should generate their own income should the expenses be more than the amount allotted.  They should also think of a more cost-effective method of spending.

The workshop, which was attended by more than 140 staff representing each PTJ in UMS included the updating of all planning and programmes, new and existing policies and one-off purchases.  – FL

Kaji Selidik Geran FRGSFRIDAY, 30 JANUARY – The Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP) Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) invites staff and family members of UMS for a free health examination.

The health examination programme is a study under the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) on the effectiveness of probiotic and prebiotic intake with or without dietary fibre to help lower cholesterol level and improve blood lipid profile.

According to a statement issued by FSMP, the results of these studies will lead to the establishment of practice guidelines for the dietary management of hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol).

The statement added that the test will be conducted from 26 to 30 January, 2 to 6 February and 9 to 11 February at UMS Polyclinic at Kingfisher, Kota Kinabalu.

FSMP advised all participants who will be involved in this study to fast for 10 to 12 hours before a blood test is done. However, they are allowed to drink water as much as necessary.

sl1m programTHURSDAY, 29 JANUARY – The Open Interviews for the 1Malaysia Training Programme Scheme (SL1M) held at the Main Lecture Hall 2 Complex, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) today received overwhelming response from graduates of Higher Learning Institutions in Sabah.

Until this afternoon, more than 1,000 visitors attended the interview which was conducted by representatives of companies in Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia.

Head of SL1M Secretariat, Hjh Norashikin Datuk Hj Ismail when met by media said that today a total of 600 job vacancies were offered by 10 companies to graduates who had yet to get a job offer.

“Each visitor had the opportunity of being interviewed by various multinational companies, with the hope that these graduates are able to get more than one job offer.

“Looking at the overwhelming response from the public here towards this programme, a number of companies participating in the SL1M programme were pleased to provide opportunity to holders of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) and Diploma,” she said.

According to him, the interview will be held throughout the day and may stretch till night as it will only be closed after all visitors have had the opportunity to be interviewed.

Among the companies that participated in the programme were AEGIS, Malaysia Airlines, QSR Brands, Labuan Financial Services Authority, Nescorp, Sri Cempaka, Onnovatory, Gain for Life, Pacific and Sabah Institute of Arts. – MA (fl)

BENabm29.01.15THURSDAY, 29 JANUARY – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah today urged all UMS staff to generate income for their departments to lower their dependency on government grants.

He said this at the opening of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah 2016-2017 Expenditure Management Workshop attended by more than 140 staff representing their departments responsible in expenditure management.

“As a public university, we always support the aspiration and mission of the Ministry of Education Malaysia, and the government in general. Thus, UMS emphasises on value for money expenditure as well as prudent spending,” he said.

He added that other steps taken to ensure prudent spending included the reduction of 34% for all official functions, conferences and seminars by optimising in-house facilities starting this year and a reduction of 5% on all food and drinks expenses.

He hoped that through this workshop, all spending could be properly planned and that an action plan schedule to curb excesses would be organised.

The function was also attended by Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation, Prof. Dr. Shahril Yusof; Head Librarian, Dyg Rukiah Ag Amit; Acting Registrar, No’man Hj. Ahmad and Acting Bursar, Zallifah Shadan. - FL

SL1MTUESDAY, 27 JANUARY – The Economic Planning Unit (EPU), Prime Minister’s Department is organising a 1Malaysia Training Scheme (SL1M) Open Interview on 29 January 2015 (Thursday).

The venue is at the Main Lecture Hall Complex 2, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) starting at 7.30 am.
 
The aim of this programme is to increase employability among our graduates to be employed by Government Linked Companies as well as the private sector.
 
According to Chief Secretariat of SL1M, Hjh Norashikin Datuk Hj. Ismail of the Human Capital Development Section EPU, she said although this programme is open to Diploma and Degree holders, Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) holders are also encouraged to attend the interview.
 
Among some of the companies that will be participating are KFC, Pizza Hut, Nescorp, AEGIS and Malaysia Airlines.
 
All SPM, Diploma and Degree holders are encouraged to attend. – FL
