FRIDAY, 21 NOVEMBER – A total of 51 Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Officer Cadet Students of the Civil Defense Corps (SISPA) were commissioned at a ceremony at the Dewan Resital (Recital Hall), UMS, yesterday.
The commissioning was officiated by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Haji Kamarlin Ombi representing the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Haji Aman.
When reading the text of the Chief Minister, he said that with the variety of skills learned, members of SISPA were not only able to become graduates with extensive marketability but also able to provide assistance when faced with disaster, emergency or war.
“It is hoped that UMS and the Civil Defense Department (JPAM) will continue to intensify its community activities and volunteerism so the public can feel their presence and readiness thus boosting the image of the university, the department and government,” he said.
According to him, the commissioning ceremony held for the first time in UMS was able to enhance the spirit of volunteerism and attract more students to join the SISPA Corps in the future.
The event also saw the commissioning of Honorary rank of Assistant Commissioner of the Civil Defence Corps to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Alumni cum UMS SISPA Corps, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ismail Ali and the commissioning of the rank of Colonel, Lieutenant Colonel and Associate Major of the Civil Defense Corps to 15 allied officers.
Also held was the conferring of the national sovereignty medal to 104 Civil Defence personnel who had served in Ops-Daulat at Lahad Datu and the Civil Defense Long Service Award to a civil defense official.

THURSDAY, 20th NOVEMBER – A total of 15,000 Utusan Malaysia newspapers will be distributed for free in conjunction with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) 16th Convocation Ceremony that will be held on the 22nd until 24th November 2014.According to the Head of Chancellery Department, No’man Ahmad, 5,000 newspapers will be distributed every day during the convocation at the Chancellor Hall and Tamu Gadang site, Padang Kawad UMS.
“4,000 newspapers will be distributed at the Chancellor Hall while the rest will be given at Tamu Gadang site,” he said when presenting a sponsored cheque to Celestina Ubing, Sabah Executive Marketing at Utusan Malaysia, in a simple ceremony yesterday.
Students and visitors can obtained the newspapers as early as 7.30 am on Saturday and Monday, while on Sunday the newspapers will be distribute at 11.00 am, added No’man.
The simple ceremony was also attended by Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academics and Internationalization, Prof. Dr. Shariff AK Omang, UMS Registrar, Datuk Abdullah Hj. Said, and the graduands.

WEDNESDAY, 19th NOVEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) pioneer graduate, Benjamin Jerome reminded the university’s undergraduates on pursuing their studies for a brighter future.According to him, knowledge search are continuous journey since experience and knowledge will constantly change with the movement of time.
“Never give up because we will never know that achievement might be just a step ahead,” he said when contacted exclusively for Media Chancellery at Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Benjamin, a Bachelor of Business with Honours (International Business) degree holder from Faculty of Business, Economics and Accountancy, is a General Manager at Kampuchea Food Corporation in Cambodia.
He held the position since 2007 is also the person in charge of every KFC franchise businesses in the country.
Benjamin also expressed his congratulations to all graduands in conjunction with UMS 16th Convocation Ceremonies.

THURSDAY, 20th NOVEMBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) grabs two gold and silver medals in the Invention, Innovation and Design on e-Learning (IIDEL) competition held at Shah Alam Convention Centre (SACC) recently.
The first gold medal was contributed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lee Kean Wah from Faculty of Psychology and Education with his innovation project, ‘Creating a Personalized Learning (PLE) to Develop University Students Writing Process’, and another gold medal was contributed by Yoon Sook Jhee with the title ’Kopivosian! Developing Localised Learning Objects for Language Learning’.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lee Kean Wah also contributed another silver medal through another innovation project, ‘Digital Materials Development for English Language Teaching (DMD4ELT)’. The second silver was from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tan Choon Keong with his project ‘Measuring Student Teachers Creativity via Morphological Analysis Method’.
The competition was one of the few programmes in the National University Carnival on e-Learning 2014 (NUCEL2014). This first time event was a platform to promote e-learning applications and practise the blended learning methods to Malaysians.
NUCEL2014, was organized by the Council of Heads of e-Learning Coordinator for Malaysia Public Higher Education Institutions (MEIPTA), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE), received a total of 194 participations from both public and private institutions of higher education (IHE).-ZMD (JA)

WEDNESDAY, 19th NOVEMBER – In conjunction with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) 16th Convocation Ceremony, UMS Security Division will be closing a few roads in campus to avoid traffic congestion.A one-way route system will be implemented beginning 22nd until 24th November by a road closure from Clock Tower Roundabout headed to Faculty of Engineering until Jalan Canselor junction.
A one-way route will be applied along Jalan Samudera (Clock Tower Roundabout heading to ODEC) and Jalan Canselor (Jalan Samudera junction headed to Chancellery).
UMS second gate at Jalan Borneo (Jalan Masjid –PALAPES) will be open for a smooth traffic flow and facilitate vehicle users to enter and exit UMS.
Parents and UMS citizens are reminded to comply with the one-way route plan and using the appropriate route to avoid traffic congestions especially at the main gate route. -MA(JA)-
